What does Amish church life look like from the inside?

In Part 2 of this conversation, two former Amish men describe the process of joining the church, learning its rules, selecting leaders, gathering for worship in homes, and growing up in services they sometimes struggled to understand.

But the conversation ultimately reaches beyond Amish culture. A church can look orderly and religious from the outside while still allowing rules, traditions, or human authority to overshadow Christ.

That is a warning every Christian should consider.

Knowing the rules is not the same as knowing Jesus. Read Scripture. Examine what you have been taught. Make sure your faith rests in Christ rather than inherited tradition.

Did Noah take two of every animal onto the ark... or seven?

Genesis 6 mentions two of every kind. Genesis 7 gives additional instructions concerning clean animals. Is this a contradiction?

The distinction matters. Noah brought two of each unclean kind, while additional clean animals were preserved for sacrifice and continued reproduction after the flood.

It is a helpful reminder that difficult passages should be read in their full context before we decide they disagree.

Unlike all the Sunday School flannel graphs, the animals probably didn’t spend the voyage riding around with their heads sticking out of the top of the ark.

“I will read the Bible cover to cover, and if I find anywhere in there that it says I have to be Amish to go to heaven, you’ll see me back here.”

He read it, and he never found it.

Instead, studying Scripture helped lead one of this episode’s guests away from fear and toward confidence that salvation is found in Jesus Christ.

His story is a reminder of why it matters to open God’s Word and examine what we have been taught in light of what it actually says.

Which book of the Bible have you found most difficult to read?

Leviticus? Numbers? One of the prophets? Maybe Revelation?

A difficult book is not an unimportant book. Sometimes we need to slow down, learn the context, and discover why God included it in His Word.

Have you ever avoided Leviticus, Numbers, or another part of the Bible because it seemed boring? Sometimes boredom is a sign that we have not yet discovered the context, purpose, or significance of what we are reading. Not every passage is equally easy or exciting, but every part of God’s Word has value. The next time Scripture feels dry, don’t immediately skip it. Ask what you might be missing.

Theology isn’t limited to pastors, professors, or people with seminary degrees. Every person holds beliefs about God, Scripture, salvation, and how faith should shape our lives.

The question isn’t whether we have a theology. The question is whether our theology is grounded in God’s Word.

“Ask, ‘What can I pray for you about?’ Then pray with him right there.”

Should you choose a church based on what you can receive or what you can give?

Christians should invest in others, use their gifts and participate in the work of the church. But they also need sound teaching, encouragement and relationships that help them grow.

A healthy church is a body in which people both give and receive.
