St. Matthias, pray for us! 🙏🏾

May 14 Feast of St. Matthias, Apostle
Chosen by lot, guided by prayer. 🙏
St. Matthias reminds us that God sees the heart, not fame, not power. Though he walked in the background, he was chosen to take the place of Judas and become a pillar of the early Church.
May we, like St. Matthias, remain faithful in the hidden moments, trusting that the Lord calls us in His perfect time.
St. Matthias, pray for us!

Why we seek the intercession of Saints…

Christians, especially Catholics and Orthodox Christians, believe we can always pray directly to Jesus. In fact, direct prayer to God is essential.

Seeking the intercession of the saints does not replace praying to Jesus — it is asking fellow members of God’s family to pray with us and for us.

Think of it this way:

If you ask a friend, family member, or your church community to pray for you, you are not rejecting Jesus. You are asking others to join you in prayer.

The saints in heaven are understood to be alive in Christ and united with Him.

As Jesus said:

“He is not God of the dead, but of the living.”

Why Catholics seek the intercession of saints

1. The saints are alive in Christ
Those who are in heaven are fully alive with God.

2. The Bible encourages intercessory prayer
Scripture teaches believers to pray for one another.

“Pray for one another...”

If people on earth can pray for us, Christians believe those in heaven can also intercede.

3. The saints are close to God
The prayers of the righteous are powerful.

“The prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective.”

The saints, being perfected in God’s presence, are considered powerful intercessors.

4. We still pray to Jesus directly
Jesus is the one mediator between God and humanity.

“For there is one mediator between God and mankind, the man Christ Jesus.”

Catholics fully believe this.

When asking a saint for intercession, they are not worshipping the saint or placing them above Jesus. They are simply asking that saint to pray to Jesus on their behalf.

A simple example

Praying directly to Jesus:
“Lord Jesus, please help me.”

Asking saintly intercession:
“, please pray for me to your Son, Jesus.”

Both ultimately go to Christ.

So the answer is:

We seek the intercession of saints not because Jesus is inaccessible, but because the Church is one family — on earth and in heaven — united in prayer, with Jesus always at the center. ✝️
