The English word entered through French and ultimately derives from a term meaning "open country" or "field," reflecting the locations where armies conducted their operations.

For centuries, the primary and dominant meaning of a campaign was a military expedition or a series of battles. Only later did the word take on a broader meaning, coming to describe any organized effort directed toward achieving a goal.

Original/traditional meaning: a military campaign; a series of operations in war.

Modern expanded meaning: any organized effort to achieve a goal, including political, advertising, charitable, or social endeavors.

If one chooses to interpret the term according to its historical and scriptural usage, then "campaign" would be understood strictly within the context of warfare rather than elections, marketing, or public advocacy. Viewed from that perspective, the modern use of the term in politics raises interesting questions about the language used to describe the pursuit of public office.
