The Today's Light daily Bible reading for Monday, August 28, 2023 is 1 Chronicles 18:1-20:8.

And the Lord gave victory to David wherever he went.So David reigned over all Israel, and he administered justice and equity to all his people. And Joab the son of Zeruiah was over the army; and Jehoshaphat the son of Ahilud was recorder; and Zadok the son of Ahitub and Ahimelech the son of Abiathar were priests; and Shavsha was secretary; and Benaiah the son of Jehoiada was over the Cherethites and the Pelethites; and David's sons were the chief officials in the service of the king.
(1 Chronicles 18:13-17)

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

King David could be certain of ultimate victory over his enemies because the Lord had promised it to him. But the outcome of each battle on the path to that ultimate victory was not nearly as certain. David, his commanders, and his forces fought against the enemies of Israel knowing that there would be setbacks ... and losses. In the face of the real threats of injury, death, and defeat, David and his leaders encouraged God's people by reminding them, as Joab put it, "Be strong, and let us use our strength for our people and for the cities of our God, and may the Lord do what seems good to him" (1 Chronicles 19:13).

We can find confidence to fight the battles in our lives with the same certainty that David had because we too have been promised an ultimate victory. In fact, the victory that God has held before us is one that has already been accomplished and secured by the blood of Jesus. When we enter into the fray of our struggles in this broken world we may suffer setbacks and real losses, but we know that the Lord who has lived and died for our redemption will indeed do what is right in His sight. We are forever victorious because of His faithfulness!

🤔 Reflection question:
When has the Lord shown His strength of His victory in the weaknesses of my defeats?
