✨ Significance of Atthami Puja Day ✨

Atthami Bucha Day is an important Buddhist holy day commemorating the cremation of the Lord Buddha, which took place eight days after His Parinibbana (passing into final Nirvana).

Atthami Bucha Day serves as an occasion to reflect on the immeasurable compassion and virtues of the Lord Buddha. It also provides an opportunity for Buddhists to study and practice His teachings, cultivate merit, and strengthen their commitment to wholesome conduct, helping to preserve and sustain Buddhism for future generations.

Cremation of the Lord Buddha

The Lord Buddha attained Parinibbāna in the most serene and dignified manner through profound meditative attainments.

The entire process of His passing into Parinibbāna was witnessed by Venerable Anuruddha, who was foremost among the disciples in the Divine Eye (Dibba-cakkhu).

Seven days after the Lord Buddha attained Parinibbāna, a grand cremation ceremony was held for His sacred body. This occasion is commemorated as Atthami Puja Day.

The Lord Buddha, the Supreme Teacher of the world, is revered and honored by human beings, celestial beings, and Brahmās alike.

After the cremation, the Buddha’s sacred relics were distributed and enshrined in various stupas. Sakka, King of the Tāvatiṃsa Heaven, also enshrined a portion of the sacred relics in the Mahā Cūḷāmaṇi Cetiya in Tāvatiṃsa Heaven, where they are venerated by celestial beings.

The teachings of the Lord Buddha have the power to transform people’s lives in the most noble way. His teachings are incomparable because they lead us to a true understanding of life and reality.

Most importantly, by practicing the Buddha’s teachings, we can develop wisdom, cultivate virtue, and attain genuine peace and happiness in our lives.

ประวัติพระสัมมาสัมพุทธเจ้า

วันอัฏฐมีบูชา
วันถวายพระเพลิงพระพุทธสรีระ

พระสัมมาสัมพุทธเจ้าเสด็จดับขันธปรินิพพานด้วยกิริยาอาการอันสงบ สง่างาม และสมบูรณ์ที่สุด ด้วยอำนาจแห่งสมาบัติและพระปรีชาญาณอันสูงสุด

กระบวนการเสด็จดับขันธปรินิพพานทั้งหมดนั้น มีพระอนุรุทธเถระ ผู้เป็นเอตทัคคะในด้านทิพยจักษุ เป็นพยานรู้เห็นตลอดเหตุการณ์

ครั้นล่วงไปเจ็ดวันภายหลังการเสด็จดับขันธปรินิพพาน จึงได้มีการประกอบพิธีถวายพระเพลิงพระพุทธสรีระอย่างสมพระเกียรติ ซึ่งวันดังกล่าวเรียกว่า “วันอัฏฐมีบูชา”

พระสัมมาสัมพุทธเจ้า ผู้ทรงเป็นพระบรมครูของโลก ทรงเป็นที่เคารพสักการะอย่างสูงสุดของมนุษย์ เทวดา และพรหมทั้งหลาย

ภายหลังการถวายพระเพลิง พระบรมสารีริกธาตุได้ถูกอัญเชิญไปประดิษฐาน ณ สถานที่สำคัญต่าง ๆ เพื่อเป็นที่สักการบูชาของพุทธศาสนิกชน โดยท้าวสักกเทวราชแห่งสวรรค์ชั้นดาวดึงส์ ได้อัญเชิญส่วนหนึ่งไปประดิษฐาน ณ มหาจุฬามณีเจดีย์ บนสวรรค์ชั้นดาวดึงส์ เพื่อเป็นที่สักการบูชาของเหล่าเทวดา

พระธรรมคำสอนของพระสัมมาสัมพุทธเจ้ามีพลังในการเปลี่ยนแปลงชีวิตของผู้คนไปสู่ความประเสริฐสูงสุด คำสอนของพระพุทธเจ้า ไม่มีสิ่งใดเสมอเหมือน เพราะช่วยให้เราเข้าใจความจริงของชีวิตและสัจธรรมแห่งธรรมชาติได้อย่างแท้จริง

ที่สำคัญที่สุด เมื่อเราน้อมนำพระธรรมคำสอนมาปฏิบัติในชีวิตประจำวัน ย่อมสามารถพัฒนาปัญญา สั่งสมคุณธรรม และเข้าถึงความสงบสุขอันแท้จริงได้ด้วยตนเอง

When we keep repeating “Buddho, Buddho” continuously for a long time, the mind gradually lets go of restlessness and distraction. Little by little, it gathers itself into the meditation word “Buddho.” Eventually, the mind becomes firmly established in a single object together with Buddho, until one clearly sees that the mind and Buddho are one and the same at all times.

Whether standing, walking, sitting, or lying down — in every posture — one sees the mind bright and clear, remaining with Buddho.

When you reach that stage, maintain and preserve that state of mind for as long as possible. Do not yet wish to see visions, attain powers, or become anything special.

Because desire is a very serious obstacle to concentration.

The moment desire arises, concentration immediately deteriorates. Concentration declines because its foundation — “Buddho” — is no longer steady. Then one feels lost, unable to find any mental anchor, and great distress arises. One longs for the peaceful happiness once experienced in meditation, and the mind becomes even more agitated.

Training the mind in meditation should be like a farmer growing rice. He does not rush. He plows, harrows, plants, and tends the field step by step without skipping any stage. Then he waits patiently for the rice to mature. Even though he cannot yet see the grains, he has confidence that one day there will surely be rice.

When the rice finally ripens and bears grain, then he knows with certainty that there will be a harvest. He does not pull at the rice plants trying to force them to produce grain according to his wishes. Whoever does such a thing gains nothing.

Meditation practice is the same. One cannot rush or skip stages. One must establish firm faith and confidence that this meditation word truly can make the mind concentrated. Do not doubt whether this meditation word suits your temperament or not. Do not compare yourself with others and think, “That person practiced this way and attained such results, but my mind does not become steady, so this method must not work.”

If the mind becomes firmly established in the meditation word one is using, then it is already correct. The purpose of meditation is simply to make the mind steady and firm. Beyond that, results depend upon each person’s accumulated merit and spiritual conditions.

During the Buddha’s time, there was once a monk meditating near a pond. He saw a heron swoop down to catch fish for food. He then used that image as his meditation object and eventually attained arahantship. “A heron catching fish” is not found in any formal meditation manual, yet he used it successfully and attained enlightenment. This is an example.

เราบริกรรมพุทโธๆๆ ไปนานๆเข้า จิตก็จะค่อยคลายความฟุ้งซ่าน แล้วจะค่อยมารวมเข้ามาอยู่กับพุทโธ จิตจะตั้งมั่นเป็นอารมณ์อันเดียวกับพุทโธ จนเห็นจิตที่ว่า พุทโธอันใดจิตก็อันนั้นอยู่ตลอดทุกเมื่อ ไม่ว่า ยืน เดิน นั่ง นอน อิริยาบถใดๆ ก็เห็นจิตใสแจ๋วอยู่กับพุทโธนั้น

เมื่อได้ถึงขนาดนั้นแล้ว ขอให้ประคองจิตนั้นไว้ในอารมณ์นั้น นานแสนนานเท่าที่จะนานได้ อย่าเพิ่งอยากเห็นนั่นเห็นนี่ หรืออยากเป็นนั้นเป็นนี้ก่อนเลย

เพราะความอยาก เป็นอุปสรรคแห่งจิตที่เป็นสมาธิอย่างร้ายแรง

เมื่อความอยากเกิดขึ้น สมาธิก็จะเสื่อมทันที สมาธิเสื่อมเพราะหลักสมาธิ คือ “พุทโธ” ไม่มั่นคง คราวนั้นแหละ คว้าหาหลักอะไรก็ไม่ได้ เกิดความเดือดร้อนใหญ่ คิดถึงแต่อารมณ์ที่เคยได้รับสมาธิความสงบสุขเมื่อก่อน จิตก็ยิ่งฟุ้งใหญ่ ฯลฯ

ฝึกหัดสมาธิให้เหมือนชาวนาทำนา เขาไม่รีบร้อน เขาหว่านกล้า ไถ คราด ปักดำ โดยลำดับไม่ข้ามขั้นตอน แล้วรอให้ต้นข้าวแก่ ถึงอย่างนั้นเขาก็ยังไม่เห็นเมล็ดไม่เห็นรวงเลย แต่เขาก็มีความเชื่อมั่นของเขาว่า จะมีเมล็ดมีรวงวันหนึ่งข้างหน้าแน่ๆ เมื่อต้นข้าวแก่แล้วออกรวงมา จึงเชื่อแน่ว่าจะได้รับผลแน่นอน เขาไม่ไปดึงต้นข้าวให้ออกรวงเอาตามใจชอบ ผู้ไปกระทำเช่นนั้น ย่อมไร้ผลโดยแท้

การฝึกสมาธิภาวนาก็เช่นเดียวกัน จะรีบร้อนข้ามขั้นตอนย่อมไม่ได้ ต้องตั้งจิตให้เลื่อมใสศรัทธาให้แน่วแน่ ว่าอันนี้ล่ะ เป็นคำบริกรรมที่จะทำให้จิตของเราเป็นสมาธิได้แท้จริง แล้วอย่าไปลังเลสงสัยว่า คำบริกรรมนี้จะถูกกับจริตนิสสัยของเราหรือไม่หนอ คำบริกรรมอันนั้น คนนั้นทำมันเป็นไปอย่างนั้นอย่างนี้ เราทำแล้วจิตไม่ตั้งมั่นอย่างนี้ใช้ไม่ได้

ถ้าจิตตั้งมั่นแน่วแน่ในคำบริกรรมที่ตนภาวนาอยู่นั้นแล้ว เป็นใช้ได้ทั้งนั้น เพราะภาวนาก็เพื่อต้องการทำจิตให้แน่วแน่เท่านั้น ส่วนนอกนั้นมันเป็นตามบุญวาสนาของแต่ละบุคคล

ครั้งพุทธกาล มีพระรูปหนึ่งไปภาวนาอยู่ใกล้สระน้ำแห่งหนึ่ง เห็นนกกระยางตัวหนึ่งโฉบปลากินเป็นอาหาร ท่านเลยถือเอาเป็นคำบริกรรมภาวนา จนได้สำเร็จเป็นพระอรหันต์ นกกระยางกินปลาไม่เคยเห็นในกัมมัฏฐานบทใด แต่ท่านเอามาภาวนาจนสำเร็จ นี้เป็นตัวอย่าง
