🕯️ Sermon: Be a Light in the Darkness
Fortress Church of Christ
Introduction:
Darkness is all around us—fear, doubt, sickness, broken relationships, and uncertainty. It can feel overwhelming, but God calls us to be a light. Jesus declared in John 8:12, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows Me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.” When we allow Christ to shine through us, the darkness cannot overcome us.
Understanding Darkness and Light:
Darkness represents confusion, sin, despair, and hopelessness. Light represents truth, love, hope, guidance, and God’s presence. Imagine walking into a dark room—fear sets in, you stumble, you feel lost. Now, turn on a lamp: every corner becomes visible, danger is avoided, and the room becomes welcoming. That is the power of God’s light in our lives and the lives of others.
Scriptural Foundation:
• Matthew 5:14-16 – “You are the light of the world… let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.”
• Philippians 2:15 – “Shine among them like stars in the sky.”
• Psalm 119:105 – “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light for my path.”
• Ephesians 5:8 – “For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Live as children of light.”
Live Examples:
• A teacher mentoring a struggling student, giving hope and guidance.
• A nurse comforting a patient in fear and pain.
• A friend encouraging someone battling depression.
These are real ways God uses us to shine in the darkness around us.
Communion Thoughts:
As we partake in communion, remember the ultimate Light—Jesus Christ. His body broken and His blood shed illuminates our path, removes the darkness of sin, and restores life. 1 Corinthians 11:26 reminds us that in communion, we proclaim the Lord’s death until He comes—His light continually shines in our hearts.
Offertory Thoughts:
Your offerings are not just acts of giving—they are acts of illumination. When we give, we extend God’s light to the needy, the hurting, and the lost. 2 Corinthians 9:7 reminds us that God loves a cheerful giver, and through generosity, darkness is replaced with hope.
Call to Action:
Be intentional with your light. Speak life, offer kindness, uphold truth, pray fervently, and reflect Christ in all you do. Remember, one small light can pierce a vast darkness.
