Boroboro Health Centre is a 50 bedded rural Health Centre 3 situated 12 kilometers outside Lira town in Northern Uganda. It was established by Christian Missionaries about 60 years ago to provide medical assistance to the poor village population that surrounds it. During the activity of the Koni rebels that plagued the area for over 20 years it became very run down and almost ceased to function. I
n the last 4 years Andy and Ceri Douglass ( Andy a retired General Practioner from U.K. and Ceri his wife who trained as a nurse/midwife) have been involved in helping to restore it a level acceptable for the 21 century. This has meant putting sheets on the beds, helping to get a supply of basic medications, restoring a water supply, rewiring the delapidated and dangerous electrics and employing trained stafft. Now in 2012 the 16 bedded maternity department has been deemed by the Ugandan government as one of the best of 30 others in the discrict. Apart from the maternity departmentwhich averages about 50 deliveries a month, the Health Centre has a busy Outpatients Department where patients can be seen by Sam the Clinical Office 24 hours a day. There are 3 wards, children`s ward has 10 beds, women`s ward 10 beds and the male ward has only 4 beds.! The Health Centre also has regular vaccination clinics, testing for HIV and TB and a good laboratory. There are presently 15 staff working there, a Clinical Officer, a Midwife, a Trained Nurse, a Book Keeper, a Laboratory Assistant, 9 Nursing Assistants and a Night Watchman. We believe that a NGO has recently installed solar panels on the maternity roof and has given them a computer and hopefully an internet dongal, if this is the case they can be linked to the rest of the world through the wonders of Facebook.
