The Book of Revelations
The book of Revelations was written by the apostle John about A.D. 95, from Patmos where it is said to "seem" that the Roman authorities had exiled him (off the coast of Asia). It was written to reveal the full identity of Christ and to give warning and hope to believers. According to NLT, its said to have been written in “apocalyptic” form—a type of Jewish literature that uses symbolic imagery to communicate hope (in the ultimate triumph of God) to those in the midst of persecution.
Revelations speaks of Jesus Christ who walked through the countryside and city as a man, touching individuals, preaching to crowds, and training 12 men to carry on his work; but also Jesus, the God-man, who gave his life completely so that all might live. It shows us that at God’s appointed time, Jesus Christ who died and rise again, and ascended into heaven will burst onto the world scene to the joy of those who believe in him and the fulfillment of His promises.
Revelation is a book of hope in which John proclaimed that the Lord Jesus will come to vindicate the righteous and judge the wicked. It's also a warning to things that are not the way they should be. It's presented in two major parts: letters to the church and message to the church.
In the vision he received, John is instructed to write to the 7 churches. Our strong lesson is that both "as a church and individuals our individual lives, we must constantly fight against the temptation to become loveless, immoral, lenient, compromising, lifeless, or casual about our faith"
The message to the church is presented from chapters 4 up to 22 broken into seven parts: worshiping God in heaven, opening the seven seals, sounding the seven trumpets, observing the great conflict, pouring out the seven plagues, seiozing the final victory, and making all things new. The presentation of revelations is not chronological.
As you read Revelations, may the Holy Spirit help you to listen and understand as Christ warns the churches, and root out any sin that blocks your relationship with him. May you be full of hope, knowing that God is in control, Christ’s victory is assured, and all who trust him will be saved.
Today, we study Revelations 1&2.
Welcome aboard, as we crown the year with a closure of the book of Revelations. We will start all over again in Genesis come 2016. Encourage your friends to join us on a fresh journey. Form a small study group in your neighborhood, family, school, church, home cell, workplace and let's enjoy the journey and encourage each other; especially as we see the Lord Jesus is about to return.
