JANANI LUWUM MEMORIAL Celebrating, the Testimony, Martyrdom & Example of St. Janani

I. Overall objective of the Memorial

The overall objective of the Memorial is to honour, celebrate and offer thanksgiving for the Life, Testimony, Martyrdom and Example of St. Janani Luwum, as a preeminent Christian leader, a great martyr of the 20th Century, and a compelling role model for the world, regardless

of faith background. II. The Roots of the Martyr

St Janani hails from the Central Lwo people of the Nile Valley. He was born in 1924 in Mucwini, to Eliya Okello and Aireni Aciro Okello of Pajong, of the Chua clan. After attending Gulu High School, he trained as a school teacher at Boroboro College in Lira. St. Janani is a seed of the East African Revival. In a dramatic conversion, in January 1948, Lapwony Janani accepted Christ as his personal Saviour in the tradition of the Revival. At the urging of the Revival leadership, he accepted to leave teaching and enroll for Church ministry. The Revival leaders were eager to have the new Revival fire lit inside the established Church itself. After training at Buwalasi Theological College, he was ordained a priest in the Diocese of Upper Nile. He later pursued higher studies at St. Augustine’s College, Canterbury, and at London School of Divinity. Rev. Janani went on to occupy virtually all key positions in the Church. These included:
• Principal of Buwalasi Theological College
• Provincial Secretary for the ecclesiastical Province
• Bishop of the Diocese of Northern Uganda
• Archbishop (Primate) of the ecclesiastical Province, then comprising Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi and Boga-Zaire (Eastern DR Congo). On 16 February, 1977, Archbishop Janani Luwum was murdered in Nakasero by then president of Uganda, Idi Amin, following a period of great tension and ugly showdown with Amin and the regime. Soldiers secretly transported his desecrated body to Mucwini (his ancestral home and birthplace), and dumped it in a hurriedly-dug grave at the church yard at Wii Gweng, Mucwini, on 19 February. This has been St. Janani’s resting place ever since. Janani is survived by his widow, Mama Mary Luwum, six children, four sisters, two brothers, and several grandchildren. Today, the legacy and resonance of St. Janani’s life far transcend all levels of his personal heritage and the zone of his ecclesiastical stewardship. He has become a special gift from Uganda to the whole world. III. Leadership of St. Janani Luwum Memorial. We are very fortunate and grateful that Archbishop Stanley Ntagali; Archbishop John Baptist Odama; Archbishop John Sentamu; and Archbishop Desmond Tutu have accepted to serve as the high Patrons of ST. JANANI LUWUM MEMORIAL . This Memorial project is being led by a group of dedicated leaders, coming from various sectors and affiliations, from Uganda and abroad, who share a deep conviction to put in place appropriate Memorial to honour and celebrate the extraordinary testimony, martyrdom and example of Archbishop Janani Luwum. To this end, a legal charity, known as ST. JANANI LUWUM MEMORIAL, has been formed under a Board of Directors. The Board is led by: Professor Emmanuel Tumusiime Mutebile (Chair); Hon. Justice James Ogoola, Hon. Rebecca Nyandeng De Mabior, Hon. Senator, Professor Peter Anyang’ Nyong’o, Dr. Martin Aliker ( Vice-Chairs ). To ensure effective planning and organization of the annual pilgrimage, prayer and thanksgiving, and other memorial activities, a National Organising Committee (NOC) has been constituted, under the Co-Chair of: Rt. Hon. Rebecca Kadaga; Rt. Hon Ruhakana Rugunda; Rt. Professor Apolo Nsibambi; Hon. Justice James Ogoola; Hon. Rebecca Nyandeng De Mabior; Hon. Senator, Professor Peter Anyang’ Nyong’o; and Ambassador Olara Otunnu. The Fundraising Campaign for St Janani Luwum Memorial is being led by Dr. Maggie Kigozi. Below are the account details:

"I'm dreaming of a White Christmas; just like the ones I used to know."..
the tune wafts in over the early morning breeze, with Nature's symphony orchestra chiming in, as chopin-esque songbirds chirp along perched on swaying boughs...
A few miles from the mist of the roaring falls, home of the rainbow, Don Jorge the jungle giraffe & his gangly Rothchilds junta, having just stuffed themselves silly on a grazing fiesta, steal a post sunrise savannah siesta betwixt the elephant palms. Harry the haughty hornbill & his chum Hernandez the heron, take their morning stroll past a graceful gazelle as darkness disrobes unravelling the rising sun's rays shimmering off their shiny plumage.
Bambi the bushbuck toddler saunters onto the track & freezes, perplexed at the huge four legged people carrier roaring towards him, "bambi, Bambi", says Nnalongo Lady Doe, as she looks up from her grassy herbal tea, nodding out to him disapprovingly until he comes to his senses & bolts for the shrubbery...

🍍 🍅❄️🎄☃️ 🍅🍍
So who was dreaming of a white Christmas again?
As it turns out, there's actually a whole lot more snow right here ;)
right now, in the tropical equatorial highlands,
than there is in parts of the Alps this very day.
My by Jove there are more Rolexes too ;)

🌻✨❄🎄❄✨🌻
Merry Christmas

So Oxymorons are the natural order of the day in Uganda

🌻❄️🎄☃️🌻 🍍✨✨🎄✨❄✨🍌🌻❄️🎄☃️🌻
And as all who have graced this Blessed, most beautiful land we all live to love more and more with each passing moment, will agree;
A stunning country it is, with the loveliest of climes, scenery so amazing and a delightful melange of flora and fauna....
Sitting majestically nearby are the alpinesque Rwenzoris, snow-capped off the equator, surrounded by some of the most incredible views with crater lakes peppered amongst neatly coiffed and manicured rolling hills dressed in pine, tea, coffee and banana green with bovine belles in the meadows in the shadows of the ranges.
All this takes one on an imaginary journey reminiscent of the Sound of Music, tearing through King Kong, roaring past the Lion King, with a hint of Heidi & the tea, paddy & tropical beauty of Siam.

🌻❄️🎄☃️🌻 🍍✨✨🎄✨❄✨🍌🌻❄️🎄☃️🌻
With Weather so lovely, forever mired in Spring and Summer; with even a dash er... of winter on order, just when one may begin to feel like one might be missing Chestnuts roaring by the open fire ;)
Uganda's beautiful, and overflowing with warmth and mirth. Who can’t but be enthralled! Listening to the unforgettable sounds of the African night, and catching the scent of the rain as it approaches off the searing hot Savannah. Looking out and seeing the tropical Rain forest, stretching endlessly before one. Watching the kaleidoscope of colours waltzing by as the sun sashays to set over silver seas high up in the world's rafters, with the equatorial starry night sky so close by, one can almost reach out over the banisters and just about grab a constellation.

🌻❄️🎄☃️🌻 🍍✨✨🎄✨❄✨🍌🌻❄️🎄☃️🌻
"...And may all your Christmases be White," .. & yet tropical & UnFrozen, all at the same time, just like here in Uganda :)

A most delightful soiree Friday was in the Blessed company of amongst others, Anointed most learned souls, Archbishop John Sentamu, RT Hon. Dr. Ruhakana Rugunda, Rt Hon. Prof. Apollo Nsibambi, Ambassador Olara Otunnu, Prof. Emmanuel Tumusiime-Mutebile; upon whose broad young shoulders arose many of our dear Nation's building blocks, and whose great footsteps have graced much of Uganda's, and the Church Of Uganda's recent history, and in whose arms, the same continues to be cradled and nurtured towards becoming more and more the Apple of the World's Eye.
And what has been most Blessed is the fact that all were thoroughly inspired by our dear Saint and led the organizing committee to a most successful Saint Janani Luwum Memorial commemoration. The team looks forward to doing even more next year onwards. Amen

Quoting RT Hon. Dr. Ruhakana Rugunda
"...The Archbishop John Sentamu of York Dr John Sentamu (left) has made Uganda and Africa extremely proud. His elevation to that powerful and high office in the Anglican Church has made Dr Sentamu a powerful representative and ambassador for Uganda and Africa. We are proud to have you there. I have known Dr Sentamu for many years, from when we were both students at Makerere Universty, residing in the then New Hall, that later was renamed Nkrumah Hall. For somebody from Masooli village in Kasangati, Gayaza Road to rise to the high echelons of that magnitude demonstrates what is possible and inspires many. I salute Archbishop Sentamu for being a consistent advocate for justice, democracy and equality around the world. It was therefore my pleasure to join many others, including my brother Ndugu Olara Otunnu (middle) at Kampala Sheraton Hotel, last evening to host Dr Sentamu to dinner--and to thank him for gracing the Janani Luwum memorial celebrations in Mucwini, Kitgum on 16 February 2015. We also launched a book about Janani Luwum authored by Dr Otunnu..."
