Chief of Defence Forces Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba has unveiled a memorial monument in honour of Lt. Col. Yonatan “Yoni” Netanyahu at the historic Old Entebbe Terminal, 50 years after the 1976 Entebbe raid.

Yoni Netanyahu, the elder brother of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was killed while commanding Israeli forces during the hostage rescue operation.

Speaking at the ceremony, Gen. Kainerugaba said the monument represents courage, sacrifice and the shared values of protecting innocent lives, while reaffirming Uganda’s commitment to strengthening relations with Israel.

He also paid tribute to the hostages who died during the crisis, as well as Ugandan soldiers killed in the operation, noting that the events happened during the era of former President Idi Amin’s dictatorship.
Gen. Kainerugaba said modern Uganda is a constitutional democracy committed to peaceful cooperation and deeper security partnerships with the international community.

TRAGEDY
A family of six, including four children, has been killed after lightning struck their home in Nyanza Cell, Oleba Town Council, Maracha District.

Oleba Town Council LCIII Chairperson Robert Angupi told Monitor that the incident occurred at about 5am on Saturday during downpour.

Angupi said the lightning also set the family’s houses ablaze.
The bodies of the deceased remained at the family home as of mid-morning Saturday, with authorities yet to complete the necessary procedures.

The deceased also include the family head and his wife.

A 46-year-old mother of six has been killed by elephants that reportedly strayed from Kidepo Valley National Park into Kitgum District.

Rose Natyang, a resident of Ludwar Village in Tikao Parish, Orom East Sub-county, was attacked at around 9:00 a.m. on Friday while harvesting sesame in her garden. Her body was later discovered by fellow residents returning from nearby gardens after they found her hoe abandoned and searched the area. She had sustained fatal injuries after being trampled by the elephants.

Local authorities responded to the scene and transported the body to Kitgum General Hospital for a post-mortem examination.

Following the incident, Chua East MP Okoya John Calvin visited the bereaved family to offer condolences. He criticized the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA), saying its response to human-wildlife conflict has been too slow.

The tragic incident has renewed concerns over increasing human-wildlife conflict in communities neighboring Kidepo Valley National Park, with residents urging authorities to strengthen measures that prevent wild animals from straying into farmland and settlements.

The National Resistance Movement (NRM) Electoral Commission has confirmed that the party will hold primaries for LCII Chairpersons and Parish Women Council Committees across the country on Friday, July 31, 2026.

The announcement was made on Thursday by the Commission Chairperson, Dr. Tanga Odoi, during a press briefing at the NRM Electoral Commission headquarters in Kampala. He was accompanied by the Commission's Deputy Chairperson, Hon. Fred Jacan Omach, and Commissioner Hon. Amb. James Williams Kinobe.

Dr. Odoi said the party is advancing to the next phase of its Local Council electoral roadmap following a commanding performance in the recently concluded LCI Chairperson elections held on July 28.

Police at Nsangi have arrested 11 suspects in connection with an aggravated robbery and r**e that occurred at Nakirama Cell, Kyengera Town Council, Wakiso District.

The incident happened on 28th July 2026 at about 4:00 a.m., when an unknown assailant reportedly broke into the complainant's shop before attacking her with a knife. The suspects demanded money and threatened to cause her grievous harm if she did not comply. They later r**ed the victim before fleeing the scene.

The victim subsequently reported the matter at Kikajo Police Post.

A team of investigators from Criminal CID, the Scene of Crime Officers and the Police Canine Unit visited the scene. The scene was examined, documented, and found to have been well preserved.

Police sniffer dog TP 297 Sofia was introduced at the victim's bedroom, where the attack had occurred. The canine successfully picked up the suspect's scent and tracked it for approximately one kilometre, leading officers to a bar..

At the bar, officers found more than ten individuals who were reportedly intoxicated. The sniffer dog conducted scent identification and indicated one of the individuals by sitting down, prompting officers to apprehend all those present for further scrutiny.

A total of 11 suspects were arrested and taken to Kikajo Police Post, where they remain in custody as investigations continue.

We continue with inquiries to establish the exact circumstances surrounding the incident and identify the principal offender.
