Chief of Defence Forces Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba has unveiled a memorial monument in honour of Lt. Col. Yonatan “Yoni” Netanyahu at the historic Old Entebbe Terminal, 50 years after the 1976 Entebbe raid.
Yoni Netanyahu, the elder brother of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was killed while commanding Israeli forces during the hostage rescue operation.
Speaking at the ceremony, Gen. Kainerugaba said the monument represents courage, sacrifice and the shared values of protecting innocent lives, while reaffirming Uganda’s commitment to strengthening relations with Israel.
He also paid tribute to the hostages who died during the crisis, as well as Ugandan soldiers killed in the operation, noting that the events happened during the era of former President Idi Amin’s dictatorship.
Gen. Kainerugaba said modern Uganda is a constitutional democracy committed to peaceful cooperation and deeper security partnerships with the international community.
