BELIEVERS RECEIVE A CROWN OF GLORY: “Blessed is the man who remains steadfast under trial, for when he has stood the test he will receive the crown of life, which God has promised to those who love Him.” (James 1:12)

The Bible often describes the life of believers as a race. Along the way, we encounter trials. Some Christians suffer for their faith; they are thrown into prison and persecuted. Others experience intense spiritual warfare and struggle against all kinds of temptations or existential doubt. Following Jesus can be exhausting! But those who finish the race, will be awarded a victory wreath or crown.

Such a wreath can be compared to a gold medal in major sports competitions. But in God’s Kingdom, there is not just one victory wreath for the “best believer.” On the contrary; everyone who remains faithful until death will receive the crown of life (see Revelation 2:10 and 2 Timothy 4:8). They will once again share in God’s glory, spending eternity in His presence.

At creation, humans were appointed as kings and priests to rule over the earth. That mission failed miserably. But soon they will reign as kings and priests of God on the new earth, crowned with His goodness and grace.

ARE YOU TIRED AND DISCOURAGED? Hard work makes you tired. That tiredness disappears after a good night’s sleep. But sometimes you feel spiritually exhausted, weary of life. Too much is coming at you; too much is being demanded of you. Or perhaps you set the bar too high for yourself and it overwhelms you. You can reach a point where you no longer see any way forward in life. That feeling of tiredness and discouragement doesn’t simply go away by catching up on sleep. Proverbs 18:14 (NIV) rightly asks:

“A crushed spirit who can bear?”

Ultimately, only God can give us new spiritual strength, even in the most difficult circumstances. The apostle Paul wrote about this from his own experience. He went through many hardships, especially while traveling the world as a missionary. If he had had to carry all of that on his own, he would have collapsed long ago. But with confidence he testified how Jesus helped him:
“I can do all this through Him who gives me strength.” (Philippians 4:13 NIV)

And in another letter, he points his readers to

“the God who gives endurance and encouragement” (Romans 15:5 NIV).

Jesus gives believers rest, courage, and new strength to face life. You don’t have to do it alone!

The work of the Holy Spirit: “Now when they heard this, they were cut to the heart, and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, ‘Brothers, what shall we do?’ And Peter said to them, ‘Repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.’” (Acts 2:37-38)

The sound of the mighty rushing wind caught the attention of many people in Jerusalem. In a compelling message, Peter explained who Jesus is and what He had done. Peter’s words deeply moved his listeners. It was not Peter’s own words that had such impact—the Holy Spirit gave him those words and brought his listeners to repentance.

In the Old Testament, the word used for the Spirit of God is “ruach” (see Genesis 1:2). This can mean wind, but also breath. Just as breath is a sign of life, the Holy Spirit brings new life to people. A light breeze or a gentle breath can turn a tiny spark into a great fire. In the same way, the Holy Spirit can “breathe” a new desire into our lives through a single word. That small beginning can have lasting effects on the rest of our life.

After Peter’s message, the Holy Spirit touched thousands of hearts in Jerusalem. That is how the Spirit still works today, in many ways. What began on that one day in Jerusalem has become a fire that has spread throughout the whole world, saving and transforming billions of lives.

Prayer: Thank You, Lord Jesus, that Your word has reached me as well. Through Your Holy Spirit, You have given me new life and continue to renew my life daily. Thank You for the great and unlimited power of the Holy Spirit

Two men, Eldad and Medad, weren’t in the tent but the Spirit came on them too and they started prophesying in the camp. Joshua wants Moses to stop them.

Today's household fellowship service, Our Ordinand continues to teach the importance of gathering: IN THE COMMUNITY OF BELIEVERS, EVERYONE IS NEEDED; “To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good.” (1 Corinthians 12:7)

The worldwide church has both unity and diversity. The same is true at the local level in the different congregations.

Believers form a unity through “one Lord, one faith, one baptism” (Ephesians 4:5). At the same time, the Holy Spirit gives them “varieties of gifts” (1 Corinthians 12:4). One receives great faith, another the gift of sharing knowledge, a third is called to take a leadership role, et cetera. So, in addition to all the existing differences in background, character, and life circumstances, God deliberately generates even more diversity!

Paul compares the church to a body made up of many different parts, each with its own function within the whole. Not a single one can be missed! Imagine a body consisting entirely of hands, or entirely of eyes. That obviously wouldn’t work. Or even if only one body part were missing, it would already cause a serious limitation. For the body to function well, all the parts must play their own role.

When we apply this to the community of believers, it is important to value both the unity and the diversity. We can use our unique gifts for the benefit of the whole.

5th Sunday of Easter, John 14:1-14;
John 14:1-14 is Jesus comforting His disciples the night before the cross. Here are the core themes:

THEMES IN JOHN14:1-14

1. Comfort in anxiety: "Do not let your hearts be troubled" v1. Jesus speaks peace into fear of the unknown and His departure.
2. Heaven and home: "In my Father’s house are many rooms" v2. He promises a prepared place. Death isn’t the end for His followers.
3. Jesus as the Way: "I am the way and the truth and the life" v6. Exclusive access to the Father comes only through Him. Not a path, but a Person.
4. Intimate knowledge of God: "If you had known me, you would have known my Father also" v7-11. To see Jesus is to see the Father. No more distance between God and us.
5. Greater works through prayer: "Whoever believes in me will do the works I have been doing, and they will do even greater things" v12. His followers continue His mission, empowered.
6. Prayer in Jesus’ name: "I will do whatever you ask in my name" v13-14. Prayer isn’t a wishlist. It’s aligning with His character and purpose, and He promises to answer.
