…When the heart is kind and at ease, you can sleep peacefully like this.

The Buddha teaches us to know and understand.
Everyone, don’t try to fix other people.
Don’t try to fix your children or your grandchildren.
If you keep trying to fix your children and grandchildren, you’ll end up unable to sleep.

Take the Prime Minister, for example.
Don’t try to fix the people.
Fix yourself.
As for a son-in-law, fix the son-in-law.
If you want to be a good son-in-law, you have to work on yourself as a son-in-law.
Do you agree? Do you agree?

At a hospital in Ubon, more than twenty years ago, there was a problem between the doctors and the nurses.
The nurses wouldn’t cooperate.

The doctors were told, ‘This is a hospital; it doesn’t belong to the doctors.’
The doctors depended on the nurses as their workforce, using them as a means to gain recognition and prestige and to appear on television, yet they did not respect the nurses—the people who were actually doing the work.

If we don’t respect our children and grandchildren, how can we expect them to respect us?

That is why I told an abbot,
‘Why don’t you respect the monks living in your own monastery?
Why do you only show respect to wealthy people?
When rich people come, it’s all “Yes, of course, yes, of course.”
Why don’t you respect the ordinary villagers?

We think that because we have money, we can simply go out and buy whatever we want to eat.’

The Buddha taught us to respect the people.
He taught us not to hoard things.
If we store things up for ourselves, conceit and pride will arise.
We have to respect the people.
Do you agree? Do you agree?

That is why Ajahn Chah said,
‘Hey, I’m not setting up a foundation.
Because relinquishing self and ego—that itself is the foundation.’

If we are full of self and ego, then when a poor person comes…we are indifferent. We can hardly even bring ourselves to give them a blessing.

If we truly have respect, then we must respect everyone.

When something is not good, we shouldn’t think in that way.
That is what respect means.

If we don’t enter into a proper system and discipline like this, we cannot solve the problem.

Two laypeople were addicted to alcohol and drugs, to the point where they could barely recognise my face anymore.
I didn’t know what else to do, so I had their heads shaved and ordained them!

I sent them to stay with Ajahn Samai
(the abbot of Wat Thapthim Daeng Dhammaram)
so that they could enter into the system and discipline.

Now they have become leaders in society.
These days, they can chant the Pāṭimokkha very proficiently, and they can lead the monks in morning and evening chanting and other services.

Phra ___ came here and saw people drinking coffee—saw monks having coffee.
Oh! His eyes nearly popped out!

I said, ‘At this rate, we’d better send him back to Khlong Song [Wat Thapthim Daeng]. Otherwise, he’ll slip back into his old ways.’

Our environment also has an influence on us.
But if we relinquish the self like this, the environment will no longer put pressure on us.

The environment is a current, a social current—like social media.

Think about it carefully.
That dark-skinned mae chi(nun)—if she relinquishes her sense of self, people will love her even more than someone who is beautiful.
Do you agree? Do you agree?

Because when people live together for many days, they eventually come to know who is truly beautiful—and whose beauty is only superficial.

Keep going!
Keep going!…

◇◇◇◇◇◇◇

..Ordination is a good thing. Ordination is good.

But when we ordain, we must place emphasis on understanding and on sacrifice. The reason is that shaving one’s head, putting on the robes, and wearing the monastic robe are merely outward signs of a renunciant.

I even tell laypeople, ‘You don’t need to ordain. As you are, you may be better than many of those who do ordain, because most of those who come to ordain are nothing but thieves.’

Think about it. Laypeople struggle and work hard for their living. They spend their own money; they do not spend other people’s money. They do not live on other people’s possessions. Even if they use their money to buy alcohol, it is still their own money. If they spend it on lottery tickets, it is still their own money. But for a renunciant, everything we have comes from other people.

We must know and understand that the salaries of civil servants and politicians, as well as the support received by renunciants, all come from the people.

As I see it, civil servants, politicians, and renunciants are merely those who reside in the house. The true owners of the house, the true owners of its wealth, are the people—the public at large.

If we do not sacrifice ourselves for others, then we are not truly civil servants, we are not truly politicians, and we are not truly renunciants.

Two or three days ago, I asked a village headman, ‘Between the monks living at the monastery and the laypeople, who are better?’

The village headman replied, ‘The laypeople are better, because the laypeople don’t deceive anyone.’

As a director, you do not need to focus on your subordinates. Focus on yourself—the director. If we ourselves are thieves, how can we tell other thieves what to do? We must bring the focus back to ourselves. Do you agree?

And don’t believe that once people become wealthy, they will stop being corrupt. Don’t believe that. The wealthier they become, the more they may become corrupt. I’m not criticizing any one person. I’m talking about the whole country.

As I see it, everyone should take His Majesty King Bhumibol as an example and take Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn as a guiding example.

For this reason, none of us should be preoccupied with other people. We must focus on ourselves. When we hold high positions, we must put those positions to good use. We must understand that whatever it is within our position that makes us afraid or anxious—that is the self, the ego.

Your family should remain equanimous. There is no need to be afraid of anyone. When we let go of the self, our stress decreases.

For someone who is a director, if you let go of the self, there will be no stress. But if there is a lot of self, you will constantly be trying to correct your subordinates. When we let go of the self, our subordinates will love us.

Think carefully about this. Why is it that some parents have children who are always arguing with them? It is because there is too much self. So naturally, the children argue back. Do you agree? They already know what their parents are like because they live together every day. They know what their father is like and what their mother is like, so arguments arise.

The more we let go of the self, the more humble and gentle we become.

Be like former Prime Minister Chuan. Prime Minister Chuan was not aggressive toward anyone. He spoke well and spoke politely. Be like His Majesty the King—never aggressive toward others.

We do not need to speak in terms like 'Gu' and 'Mueng'—the very informal ‘I’ and ‘you’—the way Luang Phor Koon did.

Luang Phor Koon had let go of the self. He was a giver; he was one who sacrificed himself for others. So even though he would say 'Gu' and 'Mueng', the people loved him all the more.

As I see it, people throughout Thailand loved Luang Phor Koon because he had let go of the self.

But there was one problem: he would nearly faint because everyone wanted him to tap them on the head! They believed that when he tapped their heads, it carried sacred power and blessings. Do you agree?

When His Majesty the King came to visit him, Luang Phor Koon simply sat there in silence. The civil servants and politicians had told him that because he used the word 'Gu', he should not speak. So he just sat there silently.

His Majesty the King or Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn asked him, ‘Why aren’t you saying anything?’

Luang Phor Koon replied,

‘They told 'Gu' not to speak.’ ...

◇◇◇◇◇◇◇..We must all know and understand.
In a day, as ordinary people, we sleep about five or six hours.

If we cling to the self, that is living in our own private world.
The self is our own private world.
Discipline means giving up that private world.
Some people say, ‘I like peace and quiet.’ No, that is not it.
What they really like is their own private world.

If the monastery is dirty, that shows that people are living in their own private worlds.
If the bathrooms and toilets are dirty,
that is what I call living in one’s own private world.

If you see a wealthy or powerful person coming and suddenly become overly sweet and accommodating—‘Yes, of course, certainly!’—
that too is what I call living in one’s own private world.

It is very good that you have come to stay with Luang Ta Narongsak. He is a superstar!
Stay with him
and enter into a life of discipline.

As for me, Luang Phor Gunhah,
when I practise meditation like this,
I do not allow myself to become drowsy.
Even for seven days and seven nights, I do not allow myself to become drowsy.
I do not even yawn.

If we relinquish the self in this way,
the Four Elements, the Five Aggregates,
the internal and external sense bases,
and the worldly conditions will not be able to dominate us.
You must understand this.
You all need to understand this.

We must know and understand problems,
because problems become wisdom.
We must understand crises,
because a crisis is an opportunity.
We should be grateful for our problems and grateful for our crises.

I also said this:
the abbot told me that those two novices
were not up to standard and were annoying the others.
I said that there have to be both good and difficult people around us—they are there to put our practice to the test.

Whether other people are good or bad,
we should have compassion for them.
The Buddha taught us to focus on cultivating purity within ourselves.
If we keep looking at and finding fault with other people,
we become what people colloquially call ‘a crazy fool’—‘บักผีบ้า, อีผีบ้า.’
Do you agree? Do you agree?
We must all know and understand it in this way.

Look at that person over there. After listening to me,
he is so happy that tears are flowing from his eyes.

When we relinquish the self,
we are happy.
But if we do not relinquish the self,
even when we are rich, we never know what is enough.
If we are poor, we suffer twice over:
we suffer because we do not have enough,
and we also suffer because we do not know what is enough.

It is good that you have come to visit me.
I am very happy for every one of you.
In a moment, I will receive the flowers from Luang Ta Narongsak.

All right... bow together now—both the monks and the laypeople.
Do as Luang Ta Maha Bua taught: just bow together.
Whether we are bowing to the Buddha or doing our work,
we perform our duty simply for the sake of fulfilling our duty.

For us human beings,
the instinct that clings to a sense of self does not want to make sacrifices.
This self-centred instinct does not want to do anything that requires sacrifice,
because the self is precisely that which does not want to sacrifice.
Do you agree?

The self is ungrateful and does not appreciate what has been done for it.
This self—
when it sees something beautiful, it goes, ‘Ohhh!’
When it hears a beautiful voice, it goes, ‘Ohhh!’

There is nothing sacred or spiritually powerful about the self.
When people criticise us, we become upset.
When people praise us, our ego swells with pride.

For this reason,
when you return to the monastery, the bathrooms and toilets must be clean.
Your living quarters must be clean.
We must emphasise finding happiness in fulfilling our duties.

You may ask, ‘Will doing this really make us happy?’
It is precisely by doing this that we become happy.
This happiness is chanda—wholesome aspiration and willingness—accompanied by wisdom.

This happiness comes with gratitude and appreciation.
It means allowing goodness and wisdom to guide our lives.
The self, on the other hand, does not want to sacrifice.

Look at the developed countries.
They have advanced through science,
but they have not developed the mind and heart to the same degree.
That is why problems arise,
and those problems do not become wisdom.
Do you agree? Do you agree?...
