Life Begins When We Stop Fearing
Introduction
Fear is a universal emotion, but it can also be one of the greatest obstacles to living a fulfilled life. Many believers are held back by fear—fear of failure, rejection, uncertainty, or even change. Yet, the Bible reminds us that God did not give us a spirit of fear but of power, love, and self-discipline (2 Timothy 1:7). Life truly begins when we choose to let go of fear and trust in God’s promises.
The Story
Let us consider the story of Peter walking on water in Matthew 14:22-33. The disciples were in a boat during a storm when they saw Jesus walking toward them on the water. Peter, filled with faith, asked Jesus to command him to come out onto the water. When Jesus called, Peter stepped out of the boat and began walking on water.
At first, Peter was focused on Jesus, and his faith carried him. But as soon as he noticed the strong wind and waves, fear took over, and he began to sink. Jesus reached out to save him and asked, "You of little faith, why did you doubt?"
This story teaches us a powerful lesson: fear can paralyze us and make us sink in life’s storms. But faith allows us to step out of our comfort zones and experience miracles. Peter’s life changed when he overcame his fear and trusted Jesus, even for a brief moment.
The story of Peter illustrates that life begins when we stop fearing and start trusting. Fear limits us, but faith empowers us. God calls us to step out of the "boats" of our comfort zones and trust Him, knowing that He will guide us through life’s storms.
Fear and Its Effects on Life
Fear creates a barrier that prevents us from fully living. It whispers lies like, "You’re not good enough," or "You’ll fail." Fear makes us shrink back from opportunities, relationships, and even God’s calling on our lives. For many believers, fear of failure or rejection stops them from pursuing their God-given purpose.
But God repeatedly tells us not to fear:
“Do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God” (Isaiah 41:10).
When I am afraid, I put my trust in you (Psalm 56:3).
When we stop fearing, we give God the freedom to work in us and through us. Life begins when we replace fear with faith.
How to Overcome Fear
1. Trust in God’s Promises
Fear diminishes when we remind ourselves of God’s faithfulness. He has plans for our good (Jeremiah 29:11) and will never leave us (Deuteronomy 31:6).
2. Shift Focus to God, Not Circumstances
Like Peter, we sink when we focus on the waves around us. Instead, fix your eyes on Jesus and His power to sustain you.
3. Rely on God’s Strength
When you feel weak or overwhelmed, remember Paul’s words in Philippians 4:13: "I can do all this through him who gives me strength."
4. Pray and Surrender
Fear often comes from trying to control what we cannot. Through prayer, surrender your fears to God and let Him take control (1 Peter 5:7).
Life Without Fear: A Testimony of Faith
Imagine a church believer hesitant to serve in ministry due to fear of failure. After much prayer and encouragement, they decide to trust God and take a leadership role. Over time, they grow in confidence, impact lives, and experience God’s blessings in ways they never imagined. This is the power of letting go of fear—stepping into a life of purpose and abundance.
Jesus Himself reminds us in John 10:10: "I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full." A life of fear is not a full life, but a life of faith is rich with purpose, joy, and peace.
Encouragement for Church Believers
As believers, we are called to live boldly and courageously:
Joshua 1:9: "Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go."
Let us encourage one another to step out in faith, trusting that God will guide and provide.
Conclusion
Life begins when we stop fearing. Fear keeps us in chains, but faith sets us free to live the life God intended for us. Like Peter, we may falter at times, but Jesus is always there to lift us up. When we overcome fear, we discover purpose, experience peace, and walk boldly into God’s promises.
Let us live not in fear, but in faith, knowing that “those who hope in the Lord will never be put to shame” (Psalm 25:3). Life is waiting—step out of the boat!
