Never Despair of the Mercy of Allah
By Malike Shamel
Assalamu Alaikum wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh.
All praise is due to Allah, the Lord of the worlds. We praise Him, we seek His help, and we ask for His forgiveness. We seek refuge in Allah from the evil within ourselves and from the consequences of our wrong actions. Whomsoever Allah guides, none can misguide, and whomsoever He allows to go astray, none can guide.
My dear brothers and sisters,
Today I want to speak about a message that every heart needs.
A message for the sinner and the righteous.
A message for the strong believer and the weak believer.
A message for the one who feels close to Allah and the one who feels far.
That message is: Never despair of the mercy of Allah.
Because one of the greatest traps of Shayṭān is not sin itself —
but losing hope after sin.
Allah ﷻ speaks directly to the broken hearts in the Qur’an and says:
۞ قُلْ يَـٰعِبَادِىَ ٱلَّذِينَ أَسْرَفُوا۟ عَلَىٰٓ أَنفُسِهِمْ لَا تَقْنَطُوا۟ مِن رَّحْمَةِ ٱللَّهِ ۚ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ يَغْفِرُ ٱلذُّنُوبَ جَمِيعًا ۚ إِنَّهُۥ هُوَ ٱلْغَفُورُ ٱلرَّحِيمُ
Qul ya AAibadiya allatheenaasrafoo AAala anfusihim la taqnatoo min rahmatiAllahi inna Allaha yaghfiru aththunoobajameeAAan innahu huwa alghafooru arraheem
“Say, ‘O My servants who have wronged themselves, do not despair of the mercy of Allah. Indeed, Allah forgives all sins. He is truly the Most Forgiving, the Most Merciful.’”
(Qur’an 39:53)
My brothers and sisters,
Look at how Allah speaks.
He does not say: O righteous servants.
He does not say: O perfect servants.
He says: “O My servants who have wronged themselves.”
Even after sin.
Even after mistakes.
Even after falling again and again.
Allah still calls them My servants.
This verse is not an encouragement to sin.
This verse is a door of hope for those who want to return.
Because despair is not humility.
Despair is a whisper of Shayṭān.
My dear brothers and sisters,
Many people today believe their sins are too many.
Too heavy.
Too dark.
But Allah answers them clearly:
“Indeed, Allah forgives all sins.”
Not some sins.
Not small sins.
All sins — when repentance is sincere.
And the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ explained this mercy even further in a powerful hadith.
Anas ibn Malik رضي الله عنه narrated that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
“Allah, Blessed is He and Most High, said:
‘O son of Adam! Verily, as long as you call upon Me and hope in Me, I forgive you, despite whatever may have occurred from you, and I do not mind.
O son of Adam! Were your sins to reach the clouds of the sky, then you sought forgiveness from Me, I would forgive you, and I would not mind.
O son of Adam! If you came to Me with sins nearly as great as the earth, and then you met Me not associating anything with Me, I would come to you with forgiveness nearly as great as it.’”
(Jamiʿ at-Tirmidhi — Hadith 3540)
My brothers and sisters,
Listen carefully to these words.
“I forgive you… and I do not mind.”
Allah is not tired of forgiving.
Allah is not burdened by your repentance.
Allah does not say: Enough, no more.
As long as the servant returns —
Allah opens the door.
But Shayṭān says:
“You’re too far.”
“You’re a hypocrite.”
“Allah won’t forgive you this time.”
And that whisper is more dangerous than the sin itself.
My dear brothers and sisters,
Islam teaches us balance.
We fear Allah — but we also hope in Allah.
We repent — but we never despair.
We feel shame — but we never give up.
Because the believer lives between fear and hope.
If you fall, repent.
If you fall again, repent again.
If you fall a thousand times, return a thousand times.
Because Allah loves the one who keeps returning.
My brothers and sisters,
This message is especially important as we prepare for Ramadan, for prayer, for change, and for returning to Allah.
No matter what your past looks like,
your future with Allah can be better.
What matters is not how many times you fell,
but whether you stood up and returned to Allah.
My dear brothers and sisters,
Let us remember:
• Allah’s mercy is greater than our sins.
• Allah’s door is open until the soul reaches the throat.
• Allah loves repentance more than we love comfort.
• Allah forgives those who sincerely return to Him.
So do not delay repentance.
Do not underestimate mercy.
Do not listen to despair.
Return to Allah — broken, sincere, hopeful.
May Allah forgive our sins.
May Allah cleanse our hearts.
May Allah allow us to meet Him with sincere repentance and pure tawḥīd.
May Allah never allow despair to enter our hearts.
Ameen.
Wa assalamu alaikum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh.
