The Church honors today the life of St Philip Neri. Known affectionately as the “Apostle of Rome,” he inspired countless people to grow closer to Christ through love, friendship, and faith formation.

Philip was born in Florence, Italy, in 1515. As a young man, he was sent to work with a relative who hoped he would enter the family business. Instead, Philip felt called to dedicate his life to God. He moved to Rome and lived simply, supporting himself as a tutor while devoting long hours to prayer, visiting churches, and serving the poor and sick.

Over time, Philip became known for his warm personality and spiritual wisdom. He believed that holiness could flourish in an atmosphere of joy. He used humor and gentleness to lead people to virtue. Many people sought him out for guidance. In 1551, he was ordained a priest and began hearing Confessions regularly.

Philip often gathered groups of people, especially young men, for prayer, Scripture reading, spiritual conversation, and sacred music. These gatherings eventually led to the founding of the Congregation of the Oratory, a community of diocesan priests who lived together without religious vows and dedicated themselves to preaching, Confession, and pastoral care.

St. Philip Neri died peacefully on May 26, 1595. Called a “hunter of souls,” he had a profound influence on the spiritual life of Rome. He was canonized in 1622.

The title "Mother of the Church" emerged in the 4th century with Saint Ambrose. It was later used by Popes Benedict XIV and Leo XIII. The Second Vatican Council, during its deliberations, considered the idea of Mary as "Mother of the Church," though it was not officially proclaimed until after the council's third session.

Beneath the Cross, the beloved disciple prefigures every member of Christ’s Mystical Body. Jesus’ final words to St John and Our Lady show that his acceptance of her goes beyond material hospitality and lodging, the exchange of words are a means of how every member of the Church is to be beneath the mantle of their spiritual mother who is seen as the Church in her perfection. By His death on the Cross and by the symbols of blood and water that flowed from Christ’s pierced side which prefigure the sacraments of the Eucharist and Baptism, it is where the Church has her origin and growth. We are to take Our Lady into the dynamism of our lives just as John the Beloved Disciple did. Beneath the cross, from the pierced side of Jesus, the Church was born.
Mary is seen as a type of the Church, she gives birth to children through the waters of Baptism, nourishes them through the sacraments and accompanies her children through life’s storms. The Church sees in Our Lady, her true perfection, By defining Mary as a type of the Church, the Second Vatican Council invites us to see in her the visible figure of the Church's spiritual reality, and in her spotless motherhood, the announcement of the Church's virginal motherhood

To be the Church that the Lord established, we must imitate faithfully the virtues and attributes of His mother who is the type of the Church, may Our Lady, Mother of the Church draw us all closer to the head of the Mystical Body, Jesus Himself. May we always take Mary into the depths of our being by asking her to draw us closer to Jesus.

PENTECOST SUNDAY
24th May 2026
Acts 2:1-11. 1 Corinthians 12:3b-7, 12-13. John 20:19-23

GUIDED AND STRENGTHENED BY THE BREATH OF THE SPIRIT

The image of breath, breathing and gentle breeze serve to express God’s goodness, gentleness and peacefulness along with His state of being present and permanent as part of something. Breath is what is most inward and intimate as well as vital and personal to someone or something.

When Jesus breathed on His disciples, it hearkens back to the time where God breathed into Adam both biological and natural life as well as the supernatural life of grace and holiness. Just as God breathed life into Adam, so does the Holy Spirit recreate and transforms Jesus’ disciples from fearful individuals to bold witnesses overcoming every division to bring all into the bosom of the Trinity. It is the Holy Spirit that constantly creates and renews the face of the earth, guiding everything to its fulfillment transforming disorder and chaos into harmony and order.

May we then always be guided and strengthened by the breath of the Spirit that gives life to our souls so that we too can give life to those we meet.

SEVENTH SUNDAY OF EASTER
17th May 2026
Acts 1:12-14. 1 Peter 4:13-16. John 17:1-11

GIVING GOD GLORY AND PRAISE

The Greek verb that translates to glorify goes beyond praise. It means to render illustrious, magnify, or to manifest the inherent dignity, honor, and worth of someone. In other words, it is to make manifest, make renowned, and reveal the weight, wealth, and magnificence of God.

Jesus speaks of His hour, which refers to His crucifixion, resurrection, and ascension. He also requests for the eternal exchange of life and love within God to be revealed in the hour. Jesus’ hour reveals the life and glory of God in radical self-giving love. The cross reveals that glory is found not in worldly fame, but in selfless obedience and the sacrificial love shown on the cross.

Jesus’ High Priestly Prayer is for the disciples work in the world to use their state in life to make God known in the world that all may come to believe and have life through Him. May we by our lives and work in the world give glory and praise to Him.

The Ascension of Jesus marks the completion of His earthly mission and the beginning of his exaltation at the right hand of the Father, where he intercedes for us as our eternal High Priest. The Ascension is a reminder that heaven is our true home and that Jesus, fully God and fully man, has gone before us to prepare a place for us in the Father’s house.

The solemnity of the Ascension carries great significance, it does not mean a departure into a remote region of the universe but, rather, the continuing closeness that the disciples had experienced so strongly that it becomes a source of lasting joy. The disciples are convinced that now, the Lord is present to them in a new and powerful way, in the only way that He can be close to them.
Jesus does not make His way to some distant planet or a galaxy far, far away. He enters into the communion of power and life with the living God, into God’s dominion over time and space, He has not gone away but by God’s own power is present with and for us in a new way, in the poor in our midst to whom we have an obligation to and in the Sacraments of the Church till the end of the age.
The Ascension, then, is the turning point between the Resurrection and the Church’s manifestation “to the world” on Pentecost Sunday, it marks the exaltation of Christ and the completion of his earthly ministry. Jesus ascends not to abandon us, but to intercede for us at the right hand of God, Jesus stated that he must leave so that the "Advocate"—the Holy Spirit—could come to guide the Church on Pentecost. Through his Ascension, Jesus affirms his divine authority and points to our ultimate destiny where we would follow. Being lifted up in the Gospel of John though it is not read, also alludes to the Ascension besides the crucifixion.

The gesture Jesus makes of His hands outstretched as He ascends into Heaven expresses His continuing relationship to His disciples and to the world, in ascending, He directs our entire being to Heaven to seek the things that are above and let the things above guide our way to our heavenly homeland .

The Feast of Our Lady of Fátima is celebrated annually on May 13 it commemorates the first apparition of the Virgin Mary to three shepherd children—Lúcia dos Santos and her cousins Francisco and Jacinta Marto—in Fátima, Portugal, in 1917.

The core message of Our Lady of Fatima, presented through her apparitions to three shepherd children in 1917, is one of prayer, penance, and devotion to the Immaculate Heart of Mary for the salvation of souls and the attainment of peace. The message of Fatima also beckons us to turn away from sin and embrace a life of faith, prayer, and penance, since the insistence of Our Lady to penance expresses her maternal concern for the fate of the human family in need of conversion and forgiveness, next, Fatima also exhorts us to pray for the peace and salvation of all nations and seek the intercession of Our Lady following her example of faith and obedience to God.

In a time like this when wars are rampant in the world today, Our Lady’s message at Fatima continues to stir hearts to peace and reconciliation, may she intercede for us all on that path where guns are hammered into ploughshares. The triumph of the Immaculate Heart promises that the destructive forces in the world will not have the final say, since the Heart open to God, purified by contemplation of God, is stronger than guns and weapons of every kind. let us entrust the world to her.
