*But whenever Moses went in before the Lord to speak with Him, he would take the veil off until he came out; and he would come out and speak to the children of Israel whatever he had been commanded.—Exodus 34:34* Moses "went in before the Lord to speak with him...and he came out, and spake unto the children of Israel." This is the Biblical norm from which we depart to our own undoing and to the everlasting injury of the souls of men. No man has any moral right to go before the people who has not first been long before the Lord. No man has any right to speak to men about God who has not first spoken to God about men. And the prophet of God should spend more time in the secret place praying than he spends in the public place preaching.... One swallow does not make a spring nor one hot day a summer; nor will a few minutes of frantic praying before service bring out the tender buds or make the flowers to appear on the earth. The field must be soaked in sunshine over a long period before it will give forth its treasures. The Christian's heart must be soaked in prayer before the true spiritual fruits begin to grow.

Did you know that even Jesus had to humble Himself. It takes humility to walk in obedience. Without humility, Jesus could have thought, I’m the Son of God. I don’t have to put up with the way people treat Me. I’m not going to the cross. It was humility that caused Him to not retaliate against those who did Him wrong. Because of His humility, He could spend His life serving others when He had every right to be served. Because of His humility, He could hang on the cross and say, “Father, forgive them. They don’t know what they’re doing.” When you humble yourself and do hard things that you know God is asking you to do—forgive the person who did you wrong, honor your spouse’s request, take advice from somebody who doesn’t have your experience—your obedience will bring a blessing. As Jesus did, do what God is asking you to do. Don’t reason it out; just do it.

The words were jarring to Mary and Jesus’ brothers when they heard them. They had been seeking Jesus, fearing that He had lost his senses (Mark 3:21) and wasn’t taking care of Himself. He was teaching a crowd when his family members arrived, and the crowd prevented them from getting to Jesus. When the crowd told Him that His family was outside looking for Him, His eventual response was a statement about obedience: “My mother and my brothers are those who hear and do the word of God” (Luke 8:21). Mark’s Gospel (3:33) tells us that He preceded that statement with a question about “Who are my mother and my brothers?”—and I doubt that question made His family feel any more secure about His overall well-being. Nevertheless, Jesus was making a statement to His family, to His audience, and to us. Being in the family of God is what matters most, and that position is not based on family names or blood lines. Rather, it’s based on having a personal relationship with Christ as Lord that’s marked by obedience to the Word of God. Those who are in the family do what God commands. For Jesus’ earthly family, that truth meant that they, too, must see Him not as their son or brother—but as their Lord. Likewise, we who carry His name today must show our faith and trust by the way we live and the choices we make. Family members walk in the footsteps of the Master.

The New Testament record the story of the miraculous birth of John the Baptist. His father, Zechariah, was fulfilling his duties in the Temple at a time when the people were praying outside. An angel caught his attention and told him that he and his wife, Elizabeth, would bear a son they would name “John.” They would be the parents of the forerunner of Jesus the Messiah. We believe one of the reasons God gave Zechariah and Elizabeth a son: “because your prayer has been heard. Your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son, and you will name him John” (Luke 1:13). We don’t know how long they had prayed for a child, but we can assume that such praying marked their lives. They longed for a child, and they longed for Israel to follow God. As righteous people who were “living without blame according to all the commands and requirements of the Lord” (Luke 1:6), they received God’s blessing of a child—but they received that gift after praying for a long time. God hears the prayers of His people. What about you? Are there needs in your life for which you used to pray, but now you’ve stopped? Were there times in your Christian walk when you were much more committed to prayer?

When God sees you praising Him in the pit, praising Him in the storm, praising Him in the loss, that’s what He calls “a sacrifice of praise.” He knows it’s not easy and you feel like quitting. When you praise Him in the pit, that moves Him in a greater way. It’s one thing to be grateful when things are going your way, but when you have a song of praise in your heart when every circumstance says you should be depressed, get ready for God to show out in your life. David said in today’s Scripture that praise brings you out of the pit. Praise when it’s sunny, and praise when it’s rainy. Praise when business is up, and praise when it’s down. David said in Psalm 34, “I will bless the Lord at all times. His praise will continually be in my mouth.” God is looking for some pit praisers, people who praise no matter what happens.
