Christianity is not a religion?
As a church leader who has spent many years preaching and teaching, I have heard the phrase "Christianity is not a religion, it is a relationship" more times than I can count. It’s usually delivered with a sense of pride to make the Gospel sounds more welcoming.
But as we study the Bible, we find that while the statement sounds wise, it’s actually a theological half-truth. To separate religion from relationship is to perform a surgery on our faith that it was never meant to survive.
The Modern Distaste for "Religion"
The reason many people are attracted to the "relationship not religion" is simple: rebellion. In our modern culture, we have been deceived into believing that any form of restriction, ritual, or regulation is a shackle on our personal freedom.
We want a God who is a friend but not a King. However, a relationship without any boundaries or structures isn't a relationship; it is an anarchy of the self. True love actually invites regulation. Ask any happily married couple if their relationship survives without the rules of fidelity.
The Pharisee Fallacy
The most common argument used to debunk religion is the example of the Pharisees. People claim the Pharisees were the religious ones who followed the law perfectly but lacked a relationship with God, whereas Christ Jesus came to bring relationship.
This argument does not hold water.
The problem with the Pharisees wasn't that they were too religious or kept the Law too strictly. The problem was that they were lawbreakers, not law-keepers. They used religious theater to mask their disobedience.
Matthew 23:23: Jesus rebukes them, saying, "Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You give a tenth of your spices... But you have neglected the more important matters of the law—justice, mercy and faithfulness."
Mark 7:9: Jesus tells them directly, "You have a fine way of setting aside the commands of God in order to observe your own traditions!"
The Pharisees didn't have too much religion, they had a counterfeit one. They replaced God’s holy standards with their own invention.
What the Bible Says About "True Religion"
If Christianity were truly "not a religion," the Apostle James would have missed the memo. He doesn't tell us to abandon religion; he tells us to practice the right kind.
"If anyone considers himself religious and yet does not keep a tight rein on his tongue, he deceives himself and his religion is worthless. Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world." — James 1:26-27
James explicitly uses the word religion (thrēskeia). He defines it not as a list of cold rules, but as the outward expression of an inward devotion.
The Conclusion: A Holy Union
Christianity is not "just a religion," but it is certainly not "just a relationship."
Relationship is the heart: It is the lifeblood, the intimacy, and the "why" behind what we do.
Religion is the body: It is the practice, the liturgy, the moral boundaries, and the "how" of our devotion.
To have a relationship with God without religion is to have a soul without a body. It has no presence in the world. To have religion without relationship is to have a body without a soul, which is a co**se.
Christianity is a religion of right relationship. We follow the King because we love Him, and because we love Him, we cherish His "rituals" (Eg. Communion and Baptism) and His "regulations" (the Commandments).
May you find the right kind of relationship with God in the Christian religion.
