Christianity is not a religion?

As a church leader who has spent many years preaching and teaching, I have heard the phrase "Christianity is not a religion, it is a relationship" more times than I can count. It’s usually delivered with a sense of pride to make the Gospel sounds more welcoming.

But as we study the Bible, we find that while the statement sounds wise, it’s actually a theological half-truth. To separate religion from relationship is to perform a surgery on our faith that it was never meant to survive.

The Modern Distaste for "Religion"

The reason many people are attracted to the "relationship not religion" is simple: rebellion. In our modern culture, we have been deceived into believing that any form of restriction, ritual, or regulation is a shackle on our personal freedom.

We want a God who is a friend but not a King. However, a relationship without any boundaries or structures isn't a relationship; it is an anarchy of the self. True love actually invites regulation. Ask any happily married couple if their relationship survives without the rules of fidelity.

The Pharisee Fallacy

The most common argument used to debunk religion is the example of the Pharisees. People claim the Pharisees were the religious ones who followed the law perfectly but lacked a relationship with God, whereas Christ Jesus came to bring relationship.

This argument does not hold water.

The problem with the Pharisees wasn't that they were too religious or kept the Law too strictly. The problem was that they were lawbreakers, not law-keepers. They used religious theater to mask their disobedience.

Matthew 23:23: Jesus rebukes them, saying, "Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You give a tenth of your spices... But you have neglected the more important matters of the law—justice, mercy and faithfulness."

Mark 7:9: Jesus tells them directly, "You have a fine way of setting aside the commands of God in order to observe your own traditions!"

The Pharisees didn't have too much religion, they had a counterfeit one. They replaced God’s holy standards with their own invention.

What the Bible Says About "True Religion"

If Christianity were truly "not a religion," the Apostle James would have missed the memo. He doesn't tell us to abandon religion; he tells us to practice the right kind.

"If anyone considers himself religious and yet does not keep a tight rein on his tongue, he deceives himself and his religion is worthless. Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world." — James 1:26-27

James explicitly uses the word religion (thrēskeia). He defines it not as a list of cold rules, but as the outward expression of an inward devotion.

The Conclusion: A Holy Union

Christianity is not "just a religion," but it is certainly not "just a relationship."

Relationship is the heart: It is the lifeblood, the intimacy, and the "why" behind what we do.

Religion is the body: It is the practice, the liturgy, the moral boundaries, and the "how" of our devotion.

To have a relationship with God without religion is to have a soul without a body. It has no presence in the world. To have religion without relationship is to have a body without a soul, which is a co**se.

Christianity is a religion of right relationship. We follow the King because we love Him, and because we love Him, we cherish His "rituals" (Eg. Communion and Baptism) and His "regulations" (the Commandments).

May you find the right kind of relationship with God in the Christian religion.

Do you know, not all prayers are mere conversation. Prayers can be a form our sacrifice and worship. Spend a moment to pray today.

Let my prayer be set forth before thee
as incense; And the lifting up of my hands as the evening sacrifice.

David seems to be able to enjoy the Lord above all else.
I want that too!

One thing have I desired of the LORD, that
will I seek after; That I may dwell in the house of the LORD all the days of my life, To behold the beauty of the LORD, and to enquire in his temple.

There are three "lost" parables in Luke 15

The Lost Sheep, The Lost Coin, and The Prodigal Son. Together, they revealed God’s heart toward the lost and the nature of repentance. Here’s their significance:

1. The Lost Sheep (Luke 15:3-7)

- Key Symbolism: God as the Shepherd actively seeking those who stray.

- Significance: Illustrates God’s initiative in rescuing the lost (those who wandered unintentionally).

- Emphasises divine pursuit: The shepherd leaves the 99 to find the one which was lost.

- Celebrates heaven’s joy over one sinner’s repentance.

2. The Lost Coin (Luke 15:8-10)

- Key Symbolism: God as the Diligent Seeker.

- Significance: Represents those lost through negligence or circumstance (unlike the sheep’s wandering). Shows God’s meticulous, intentional search: The woman lights a lamp, sweeps carefully, and doesn’t rest until it’s found.

- Highlights divine initiative: The coin couldn’t “repent” but it was restored solely by the seeker’s effort.

- Reinforces God’s value for every individual, no matter how insignificant they seem.

3. The Prodigal Son (Luke 15:11-32)

- Key Symbolism: Repentance and Unconditional Grace.

- Significance: Depicts willful rebellion followed by sincere repentance (the son’s "coming to his senses").

- Reveals God as the Forgiving Father: Waiting, running to embrace, and restoring the repentant. Contrasts human resentment (older son) with divine mercy.

- Provides the full picture of repentance: Confession ("I have sinned"), humility ("no longer worthy"), and return.

Together, They Form a Unified Message:

- God’s Pursuit: All three parables show God initiating restoration whether through seeking (sheep/coin) or waiting (prodigal).

- Scope of Repentance:

- Lost Sheep: Repentance for those who wander unintentionally.

- Lost Coin: God’s grace for those passively lost (no action needed only His search).

- Prodigal Son: Repentance for those who willfully rebel (applicable to believers).

- Heaven’s Joy: Each ends with celebration, stressing heaven’s rejoicing over one sinner turning to God.

The parables are complete together. Not individually.

Theological position is not faith.
Faith is the dynamics in trusting and obeying our Lord in any circumstances or the intentional turning back to God from our failures and sins.

Those who are in the spirit must walk in the spirit. Crucifying the flesh is not a one time process. Jesus said we must deny ourselves daily, take up the cross and follow him. He understood that it is a daily intentional act and not a one time decision.
Galatians 5:24
And they that are Christ's have crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts.

Prepare for war. The time of harvest is now. You have only one call. Not to be a businessman, a teacher, or even a full time worker. You are called to be Jesus’s disciples and to make disciples. Any hurdles to this is by the enemy.

“Proclaim ye this among the Gentiles; Prepare war, wake up the mighty men, let all the men of war draw near; let them come up: beat your plowshares into swords, and your pruninghooks into spears: let the weak say, I am strong. Assemble yourselves, and come, all ye heathen, and gather yourselves together round about: thither cause thy mighty ones to come down, O LORD. Let the heathen be wakened, and come up to the valley of Jehoshaphat: for there will I sit to judge all the heathen round about. Put ye in the sickle, for the harvest is ripe: come, get you down; for the press is full, the fats overflow; for their wickedness is great. Multitudes, multitudes in the valley of decision: for the day of the LORD is near in the valley of decision.”

1 Peter 3:8-12
Finally, be ye all of one mind, having compassion one of another, love as brethren, be pitiful, be courteous: not rendering evil for evil, or railing for railing: but contrariwise blessing; knowing that ye are thereunto called, that ye should inherit a blessing. For He that will love life, And see good days, Let him refrain his tongue from evil, And his lips that they speak no guile: Let him eschew evil, and do good; Let him seek peace, and ensue it. For the eyes of the Lord are over the righteous, And his ears are open unto their prayers: But the face of the Lord is against them that do evil.

Zephaniah 3:5
The just LORD is in the midst thereof; he will not do iniquity: every morning doth he bring his judgment to light, he faileth not; but the unjust knoweth no shame.

Zephaniah is a book seldom preached. Yes the message contains some of the secrets of repentance and coming back to the Lord. In chapter 3, the Lord was faithful in working every day but the people was indifferent towards doing wrong and ignored the corrections of God.
The remedy is to seek the Lord with patience. He promise that He will turn things round. Seek the Lord today.

Today, we honour those who provide spiritual leadership in the family. Protect and provide for them, and learn to love and care for every member in your household. For those who are now struggling to fulfill the role and responsibilities of a father, remember that these struggles are for the present. If we present them to God, you will, in time, realize that these are the best moments you have, for there is a reward awaiting. Happy Father's Day.

Faith must be evidence with obedience and work.

“Unto the pure all things are pure: but unto them that are defiled and unbelieving is nothing pure; but even their mind and conscience is defiled. They profess that they know God; but in works they deny him, being abominable, and disobedient, and unto every good work reprobate.”
