🤍 “I was very moved to remember why I care — because Jesus first cared for me in my helpless state…”

These words from a past COP participant capture the heart of why we gather. Before we serve, advocate, or lead, we remember that Christ first welcomed us, mended our relationship with God, and had compassion on us.

If you desire to live and work in light of these truths, join us at KIN’s upcoming COP for Christians in Disability Work. Come to be reminded, renewed, and encouraged alongside others who share this calling 🧡

“They are loved.” 💛

As we prepare for the upcoming Dementia Ministry Conference, we’re reminded of this powerful truth from Professor John Swinton: Despite the fallenness of our condition, people living with dementia are deeply loved by God.

If you long to understand dementia through a lens of faith and gospel hope, join us on 30 May 2026 at Singapore Bible College. We’d love to have you with us.

🧧 As we wrap up our Lunar New Year interaction tips series, here are three final reminders when spending time with loved ones living with dementia:

💛 Focus on dignity; honour the person. Avoid speaking about them as if they’re not present. Even if memory fades, dignity remains. Include them in the conversation.
🌿 Reassure rather than correct. Avoid arguing or lengthy explanations. If confusion arises, gently redirect or change the activity. Our calm presence often speaks louder than logic.
🤲 Offer simple choices as too many options can overwhelm. Instead of “Where would you like to sit?”, try “Would you like to sit here or over there?”

If you’d like to journey deeper in understanding dementia through a lens of faith and hope, join us at KIN’s Dementia Ministry Conference on 30 May 2026 at Singapore Bible College.

Together, we’ll explore how the Church can move beyond purely medical views to embrace gospel hope, hear stories from local churches and social service agencies, and discover practical ways to remember and walk alongside persons living with dementia and their families.

🧧 Still visiting this Chinese New Year?

Here are a few more gentle reminders when spending time with loved ones living with dementia:

👂 Say their name before speaking. Starting with a simple “Ah Ma…” or “Uncle John…” can help reduce anxiety and ground their attention during conversations.
💛 Validate emotions, even if the facts seem inaccurate. Instead of correcting (“No, that didn’t happen”) try, “That sounds upsetting.” Emotional reality often matters more than factual accuracy.
🙏 Connect through long-term spiritual memory. Spiritual language learned in one’s youth often remain. Say the Lord’s Prayer slowly together, or offer a short, familiar blessing.
💭 Shift our mindset and reflect beyond what we see. Instead of wondering “Why are they behaving this way?” ask, “What might they be trying to tell me?” Remember, behaviour is communication.

As the festivities continue, may this season be marked not just by reunion dinners, but also by patience, understanding, and most importantly, love that truly stays present. 🧡

🧧 Visiting loved ones this Chinese New Year?

Amidst the house visitations and celebrations, some of us may be spending time with family members and friends living with dementia. Here are a few gentle reminders to help make those interactions more meaningful:

✨ Avoid asking “Do you remember who I am?” Instead, use more closed-ended questions to reduce pressure.
🎵 Engage through the senses as memory for music, rhythm, and touch often lasts longer than verbal memory. Examples include singing familiar hymns or songs, showing photos, and offering something to hold like a Bible, a cross or a soft object.
🔇 Reduce environmental distractions to make conversations easier. Choose quiet spaces whenever possible, and sit together at eye level when conversing.
🗣 Use simple, clear language when talking, and slow down to give space and time to respond.

Above all, your calm presence matters most. 🧡

KIN wishes all a lovely and meaningful Chinese New Year. May your visitations be filled with patience, warmth, and moments of true connection. 🍊🍊
