On the authority of Abdullah ibn Masud (may Allah be pleased with him), who said:
“There will come upon the people a time when a person’s religion will not remain safe for him except for the one who moves with his religion from one place to another and from one hole (hiding-place) to another.”
“If livelihood cannot be obtained except through disobedience to Allah, then at that time celibacy (remaining single) becomes permissible.”
It was said: “O Abu Abdur-Rahman (i.e., Ibn Masud)?” He replied: “Yes, if you reach that time, then remain steadfast (or stay put).”
Al-Musannaf of Ibn Abi Shaybah

On the authority of Anas ibn Mālik (may Allah be pleased with him), from the Prophet ﷺ, who said:
“There will come upon the people a time when the patient one among them who holds fast to his religion will be like the one grasping a burning coal.”

What is Ashura?

Ashura is the 10th day of Muharram and one of the most significant days in the Islamic calendar. It is remembered as the day Allah (SWT) saved Prophet Musa (AS) and the Children of Israel from Pharaoh.

The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) fasted on this day and encouraged Muslims to do the same. Fasting on Ashura is a highly rewarded act of worship and is a means of seeking Allah’s forgiveness for the sins of the previous year. Muslims are encouraged to fast either the 9th and 10th of Muharram or the 10th and 11th of Muharram.

The Virtues of Muharram
Muharram holds a special place in Islam. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) referred to it as the “Month of Allah”.

The Prophet (peace be upon him) said:

“The best fasting after Ramadan is in Allah’s month, Muharram.”
(Sahih Muslim)

This sacred month is an excellent time to increase voluntary worship, charity, and remembrance of Allah.

“Indeed, the number of months with Allah is twelve [lunar] months in the register of Allah from the day He created the heavens and the earth; of these, four are sacred.”
(Qur’an 9:36)

Muharram: The Sacred Month of Allah

Muharram is the first month of the Islamic calendar and marks the beginning of the Islamic New Year. It is one of the four sacred months in Islam and is a special time for reflection, worship, and drawing closer to Allah (SWT).

As we begin a new Hijri year, Muharram provides an opportunity to strengthen our faith, increase our good deeds, and seek Allah’s mercy and forgiveness.
