Powerful 7.4-Magnitude Earthquake Strikes Southern Philippines, Causing Deaths and Widespread Damage
DAVAO ORIENTAL, Philippines — A powerful 7.4-magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of Davao Oriental in the southern Philippines on Friday, October 10, 2025, resulting in multiple casualties, widespread property damage, and triggering a temporary tsunami warning.
The major seismic event occurred near the town of Manay, with the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) attributing the shallow quake to movement along the Philippine Trench. The initial tremor was followed hours later by a significant 6.7-magnitude aftershock, intensifying the panic across the Davao and Caraga regions.
Initial reports from government officials confirmed at least nine fatalities and hundreds of injuries. The death toll included residents hit by falling debris and victims of landslides, such as those reported in Pantukan town, Davao de Oro province.
The powerful shaking caused structural damage across the region. Cracks were reported at the international airport in Davao City, a high school in Gov. Generoso town was damaged, and numerous residences and commercial buildings sustained visible harm, with debris and toppled structures seen in affected communities. Power outages were also reported immediately following the quake.
The US Tsunami Warning System initially issued an alert for hazardous waves along coastlines within 300 kilometers of the epicenter, prompting thousands of coastal residents to evacuate to higher ground. The tsunami alert was eventually lifted, but authorities urged communities to remain on high alert for further aftershocks.
The Philippines sits on the geologically active "Pacific Ring of Fire," making it susceptible to frequent and powerful earthquakes. This event follows a separate magnitude 6.9 earthquake that struck the central Philippines just weeks prior. Relief and assessment teams are currently deployed to coordinate aid and monitor the situation in the affected provinces.
