Habacuc no enfrentaba circunstancias fáciles. Por ser profeta, Dios le había mostrado que vendrían días en que ni las cosechas ni el ganado producirían (3:17). Se necesitaría más que optimismo para soportar esas dificultades futuras, e Israel caería en una pobreza extrema. A pesar de todo, Habacuc dijo que se alegraría en el Señor y que se gozaría en Él (v. 18), proclamando su esperanza en el Dios que proveería la fuerza para andar por lugares difíciles (v. 19). A veces, atravesamos épocas de profundo dolor y problemas. Pero sin importar lo que hayamos perdido —o hayamos querido y no pudimos conseguir—, como Habacuc, podemos regocijarnos en nuestra relación con un Dios amoroso. Aunque parezca que ya no nos queda nada, el Señor nunca nos dejará ni nos abandonará (Hebreos 13:5). Él es quien da “alegría en lugar del espíritu angustiado” (Isaías 61:3).

Habakkuk did not face easy circumstances. As a prophet, God had shown him that days would come when neither crops nor livestock would produce (3:17). It would take more than optimism to endure those future hardships, and Israel would fall into extreme poverty. Despite everything, Habakkuk said he would rejoice in the Lord and be glad in Him (v. 18), proclaiming his hope in the God who would provide the strength to walk through difficult places (v. 19). At times, we go through periods of deep sorrow and trouble. But no matter what we have lost—or wanted but could not obtain—like Habakkuk, we can rejoice in our relationship with a loving God. Even when it seems we have nothing left, the Lord will never leave us nor forsake us (Hebrews 13:5). He is the one who gives “joy instead of a crushed spirit” (Isaiah 61:3).

En nuestra época, tanto los incrédulos como los creyentes se distraen fácilmente de las cosas eternas. ¿Cómo pueden los seguidores de Cristo percibir la verdad del gran amor de Dios en medio de la niebla de distracciones? En primer lugar, amándonos unos a otros, tal como Jesús dijo: “En esto conocerán todos que sois mis discípulos, si tuviereis amor los unos con los otros” (Juan 13:35). Y luego, compartiendo el evangelio para atraer a otros al Salvador. Como escribió Pablo: “somos embajadores en nombre de Cristo” (2 Corintios 5:20). De este modo, el cuerpo de Cristo puede reflejar y proyectar el amor de Dios —que tan desesperadamente necesitamos—, tanto unos a otros como a quienes nos rodean.

In our time, both unbelievers and believers are easily distracted from eternal things. How can followers of Christ perceive the truth of God’s great love amidst the fog of distractions? First, by loving one another, just as Jesus said, “By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another” (John 13:35). And then, by sharing the gospel to draw others to the Savior. As Paul wrote, “We are ambassadors for Christ” (2 Corinthians 5:20). In this way, the body of Christ can reflect and project God’s love—which we so desperately need—both to one another and to those around us.

El comienzo del ministerio del apóstol Pablo no fue muy creíble, pero Bernabé respaldó su llamado. Por ese ánimo, la iglesia creyó en la fe de Saulo (Hechos 9:27). Bernabé también alentó a la incipiente iglesia de Antioquía, ayudándola a convertirse en una de las más influyentes en el libro de Hechos (11:22-23). Su estímulo, junto con el de Pablo, alentó a la iglesia de Jerusalén para que aceptara a los creyentes gentiles (15:19). De muchas maneras, la historia de la iglesia primitiva es una crónica de aliento. Lo mismo debería aplicarse a nosotros. Si solo pensamos que alentar es simplemente decirle algo agradable a alguien, no estamos reconociendo el efecto duradero que posee. Mediante el aliento, Dios moldea nuestras vidas y las de los demás.

The beginning of the apostle Paul’s ministry wasn’t very credible, but Barnabas supported his calling. Because of this encouragement, the church believed in Saul’s faith (Acts 9:27). Barnabas also encouraged the fledgling church in Antioch, helping it become one of the most influential churches in the book of Acts (11:22–23). His encouragement, along with Paul’s, encouraged the church in Jerusalem to accept Gentile believers (15:19). In many ways, the history of the early church is a chronicle of encouragement. The same should apply to us. If we think of encouragement as simply saying something nice to someone, we are missing the lasting effect it has. Through encouragement, God shapes our lives and the lives of others.

¿Alguna vez te resultó difícil hacer lo que leíste o escuchaste de la Biblia? No eres el único. Es mucho más fácil leerla o escucharla que obedecerla. Por eso, el desafío de Santiago es tan apropiado: “sed hacedores de la palabra, y no tan solamente oidores, engañándoos a vosotros mismos” (Santiago 1:22). La ilustración del espejo me gusta porque sabemos qué significa ver algo en nosotros que debemos cambiar. No basta con observar solamente. Cuando Santiago nos insta a mirar “atentamente” la verdad de Dios, nos alienta a vivirla. La Palabra de Dios merece nuestra obediencia plena.

Have you ever found it difficult to do what you read or heard in the Bible? You're not alone. It's much easier to read or hear it than to obey it. That's why James' challenge is so fitting: “Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says” (James 1:22). I like the mirror illustration because we know what it means to see something in ourselves that we need to change. It's not enough to just observe. When James urges us to “look closely” at God's truth, he encourages us to live it out. God's Word deserves our complete obedience.

El apóstol Santiago afirma que todo servicio de quien profesa ser creyente es el resultado de una fe genuina: “la fe, si no tiene obras, es muerta” (Santiago 2:14-17). Confesar que creemos nos hace hijos de Dios, pero cuando servimos a los demás en su nombre, actuamos como creyentes que confían en Cristo y lo siguen (v. 24). La fe y el servicio van tan íntimamente ligados como el cuerpo y el espíritu (v. 26), y muestran maravillosamente el poder de Cristo en y a través de nosotros. Después de aceptar personalmente que el sacrificio por amor de Cristo en la cruz nos lava, la fe auténtica rebosa en servicio a los demás.

The apostle James affirms that all service by someone who professes to be a believer is the result of genuine faith: “faith without works is dead” (James 2:14-17). Confessing that we believe makes us children of God, but when we serve others in his name, we act as believers who trust in Christ and follow him (v. 24). Faith and service are as intimately linked as body and spirit (v. 26), and they beautifully demonstrate the power of Christ in and through us. After personally accepting that Christ’s loving sacrifice on the cross cleanses us, authentic faith overflows in service to others.

En 1 Corintios 15, Pablo nos asegura que nuestro cuerpo puede ser débil ahora, pero que “resucitará en gloria” (v. 43). Como Dios nos promete que resucitaremos a través de Cristo, podemos confiar en que usará cada pequeño esfuerzo hecho por Él para marcar una diferencia en su reino (v. 58). Incluso si tenemos limitaciones físicas, una sonrisa, una palabra de ánimo, una oración o una muestra de fe durante la prueba pueden ministrar a los miembros diversos e interdependientes del cuerpo de Cristo. Cuando servimos al Señor, no hay tarea o acto de amor demasiado insignificante. Jesús, gracias por valorarnos y utilizarnos para edificar a otros.

In 1 Corinthians 15, Paul assures us that our bodies may be weak now, but that they will “be raised to life in glory” (v. 43). Since God promises that we will be raised through Christ, we can trust that He will use every small effort He makes to make a difference in His kingdom (v. 58). Even if we have physical limitations, a smile, a word of encouragement, a prayer, or a demonstration of faith during a trial can minister to the diverse and interdependent members of the body of Christ. When we serve the Lord, no task or act of love is too small. Jesus, thank You for valuing us and using us to build others up.

Jesús vio el verdadero tamaño de la ofrenda —y del corazón— de la viuda cuando esta puso dos monedas en el arca del templo, y describió lo que significaba para ella: “esta viuda pobre echó más que todos los que han echado en el arca… echó todo lo que tenía, todo su sustento” (Marcos 12:43-44). La viuda no dijo nada de su situación, pero Jesús reconoció que lo que otros consideraban una ofrenda pequeña, para ella, era un sacrificio. Y a nosotros nos ve igual. Que encontremos consuelo en su entendimiento infinito. Dios, gracias por conocerme infinitamente.

Jesus saw the true size of the widow’s offering—and her heart—when she placed two coins in the temple treasury, and He described what it meant for her: “this poor widow has put in more than all those who have given to the treasury… she put in all that she had, her whole livelihood” (Mark 12:43-44). The widow said nothing about her situation, yet Jesus recognized that what others considered a small offering was, for her, a sacrifice. And He sees us the same way. May we find comfort in His infinite understanding. God, thank You for knowing me infinitely.
