Saint Clare (Memorial)
THEME: How we forget the past easily
(Deut 4:32-40, Mt. 16:24-28)
11th Friday August 2023

The past is never dead, its not even past, the past gives birth to our present, and enables us to plan for the future, it's serve as our instructor. Without the past our existence remain a dream we are trying to wake up from. But the past reminds us that we once had yesterday and we are now in today and we anticipate tomorrow.

In the first reading of today, Moses reminded the people of Israel of Gods wonderful deeds in their midst, How he delivered them, protected them, provided for them in the wilderness and yet at a slight defficult encounter they start complaining and when things get juicy they abandon their vows to God and start chasing other gods and evil ways.

Today, we also betray our love for God each time we forget our Baptismal vows and Chase after the things of the world, to this Jesus ask in the Gospel reading, what shall it profit a man if he gains the whole world and forfeit his life? We must know today anytime we forget about God and our promises to love Him, serve him and follow Him to run after evil, we forfeit His promise of eternal life in heaven in the future.

Today we celebrate the Memorial of St Clare who abandoned her parents wealth and sold all her costly things to follow the way of Christ and she never for a moment forgot her vows till death.

May God help us to always remember his love for us and help us never to abandon His way to Chase the Vanity of this world....amen🙏

PRAYER TRANSFIGURES US FOR OUR MISSION
Of the three accounts about the Transfiguration of Jesus, only Luke’s account tells us specifically that Jesus went up the mountain to pray. ‘’As he was praying, the appearance of his countenance was altered and his clothing became dazzling white.’’ In a word, He was transfigured. The Lord Jesus prayed quite frequently. Filled with a deep sense of mission, He had to constantly keep Himself in touch with God the Father. He was approaching the end of His mission, which He realised was going to end in great suffering and humiliation. He had to have recourse with the Father. It was in this process that He was transfigured.

In the Transfiguration, Jesus was seen talking with Moses and Elijah two great figures of the Old Testament. Moses represented the Law and Elijah represented the prophets. As we know too well, the mission of Jesus was to fulfil the Law and the prophets. It was only fitting that Jesus should be seen in conversation with these two prominent figures of salvation history. The glory of Jesus shown at the Transfiguration was to cushion the effect of the scandal that would arise from His outrageous death by Crucifixion.

In the second reading, Paul laments the Fact that many Christians by their lifestyles had made themselves enemies of cross of Jesus. He called on Christians of every age to have the self discipline that would lead them to experience the glory of the transfigured Jesus. This self discipline can only come about through intimacy with Jesus in prayer. Lent provides us ample opportunity for prayer.

The first reading presents us Abraham as a man who put his trust in God’s promises. We can build up this trust when we have a profound attitude of prayer that can transfigure us.

Transfigured Jesus, have mercy on us. Amen.
