Pope emphasized that a loving relationship with God is key for a happy and fulfilling life on earth and also in heaven.

Pope Francis on Wednesday emphasized the need to overcome the “logic of merit” to be a committed follower of Jesus Christ and to trust more in God’s gratuitous love.
Continuing his jubilee catechesis series “Jesus Christ Our Hope” on the life of Jesus, the pope wrote a reflection on chapter 10 of St. Mark’s Gospel when Christ encounters a rich young man with a “fine resume” of good deeds.

“He is a man who has observed the commandments ever since his youth but who, despite this, has not yet found the meaning of his life,” the Holy Father wrote in his April 9 catechesis.
“Perhaps he is one who has not yet truly made up his mind, despite his appearance as a committed person, “ he continued.
Commenting that “eternal life” is not “obtained by right” or “through meticulous observance of commitments,” the 88-year-old pope emphasized that a loving relationship with God and with others is key for a happy and fulfilling life on earth and also in heaven.
“Indeed, beyond the things we do, our sacrifices and successes, what truly counts in order to be happy is what we carry in our heart,” the Holy Father said.
In his catechesis, the pope invited his readers to consider God’s love as a gift he desires to share with others and not merely as a reward he grants to those who carry out good works.
“Jesus’ love is gratuitous: exactly the opposite of the logic of merit that has beset this person,” he said. “We are truly happy when we realize we are loved in this way, freely, by grace.”

“This also applies to the relationships between us: as long as we try to buy love or beg for affection, those relationships will never make us feel happy,” he added.
To make “our hearts freer” to accept the proposal of Jesus to follow him, the Holy Father said it is necessary to take a look inside our hearts and give our wounds and weaknesses to the God who wants to heal us.
“Perhaps today, precisely because we live in a culture of self-sufficiency and individualism, we find ourselves more unhappy because we no longer hear our name spoken by someone who loves us freely,” the pope shared in his catechesis.
Noting the sadness of the young man who refused Jesus’ offer to be his disciple and follow him, the pope said to be aware that “what we think are riches” could be “only burdens that are holding us back.”
The Holy Father concluded his Wednesday catechesis with a prayer, entrusting “all people who are sad and undecided” to the Heart of Jesus “so that they may feel the loving gaze of the Lord.”

Jafarabad flood victims killed by firing during ration distribution: 'The son's body came home in exchange for help'
Courtesy BBC News : 09:10:2022:The firing incident took place in the Cattle Farm area of Jaffarabad. Noreez Ali's cousin Tariq Ali said that people from a non-governmental organization had come to his village Goth Nizamuddin Mastoi to survey flood-affected families.
They said that after the survey, they were issued tokens and told to come for ration when they call them.
He said that after the survey he got a call asking him to come to the cattle farm area on Thursday and take the ration. 'It was not easy to even get to the ration distribution point.'
Vasand Khan Mastoi told the BBC on phone that the cattle farm is located directly at a distance of three kilometers from his village, but due to standing flood water it was not possible to reach there directly, so his son and Others had to travel long distances to get there.
They said that they had to go through an alternative route which is approximately six to seven kilometers. Noreez Ali's cousin Tariq Ali was also among those who went together from the village to collect relief rations.
"When we reached the area of the cattle farm where the ration was to be distributed, there was a lot of rush due to which people had to face a difficult situation," said Tariq Ali.
"We thought that only people from our village would be there so we would get ration easily but when we got there, there was a large number of people as the victims were also called from other union councils."
He said that in view of the large number of people, there was no proper arrangement for proper distribution of rations, which led to disorder and stampede.
Tariq Ali said that there was firing by the police on this occasion which continued for more than ten minutes according to him. 'The firing was so intense that people kept falling over each other out of fear.'
'Meanwhile we saw that Noreez Ali had fallen on the ground and blood was flowing from his left shoulder.' According to him, Norez was hit by a bullet under the left shoulder from the firing by the police.
"After being shot, we tried to rush him to the hospital but he died at the hospital."

‘Pakistan paying price of something created by others’ Guterres
Karachi: 10:09:2022: United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, while visiting the flood-hit areas on Saturday, said that the devastation caused by floods was beyond imagination.
He visited flood-affected areas in Sindh and Balochistan, stressing on developed nations to assist Pakistan as the international body’s help is “a drop in the ocean” compared to what was needed to rebuild.
Nearly 1,400 people have died in flooding that covers a third of the country — an area the size of the United Kingdom — wiping out crops and destroying homes, businesses, roads and bridges.
Guterres hopes his visit will galvanise support for Pakistan, which needs at least $10 billion to repair the damaged infrastructure.
The UNSG, in a conversation with journalists in Sukkur, said that there needs to be a serious discussion on loss and damages as “what the UN is doing in Pakistan is a drop in the ocean of what is needed”.
“We are perfectly aware of our limited capacity and our resources. But you can absolutely be sure about one thing as we are in total solidarity with the Pakistani people.”
The UN chief said that he will ask the international community to ensure that they help Pakistan “now” while vowing to raise awareness about the disastrous situation.
Pakistan receives heavy — often destructive — rains during its annual monsoon season, which is crucial for agriculture and water supplies. But downpours as intense as this year have not been seen for decades.
“It is not a matter of generosity, but a matter of justice,” he said, reiterating the UN’s commitment, strong support and solidarity with the flood-affected populace of Pakistan.
Guterres said that huge damages and losses were caused by the floods to human lives and properties. He stressed that the international community must realise the serious impacts of greenhouse emissions as nature was striking back in the form of natural calamities.
Greenhouse gases have accelerated climate change and the nations with larger greenhouse emission footprints must understand these issues, Guterres added.
António Guterres said the UN will strongly advocate for "debt swaps", with IMF and World Bank through which developing countries like Pakistan instead of paying a debt to foreign creditors will be able to use that money to invest in climate resilience, investments in sustainable infrastructure and green transition of their economies.
He said: “We will go on strongly advocating for these solutions in the meetings with IMF and World Bank, which will take place soon. And, also in G-20 meeting.”
Speaking to journalists, alongside Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari and Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah in Karachi, Guterres said: “We have declared war on nature and thus we see here in Pakistan that nature is striking back with devastating consequences.”
The UNSG said that he had seen many humanitarian disasters in the world but “have never seen climate carnage on this scale.”
“I have simply no words to describe what I have seen today,” he said. He highlighted that the flood-hit area is three times the total area of his country — Portugal.
Guterres recognised that the needs are enormous, therefore, he urged “massive and urgent financial support” for Pakistan.
“This is not just a question of solidarity or generosity, it is a question of justice. Pakistan is paying the price of something that was created by others,” he maintained.
The United Nations has already launched an appeal for $160 million in aid to help Pakistan cope with the disaster.
In a tweet earlier, the UNSG said developing nations are paying a “horrific price” for the world’s reliance on fossil fuels. “Pakistan and other developing countries are paying a horrific price for the intransigence of big emitters that continue to bet on fossil fuels,” Guterres said.
“From Islamabad, I am issuing a global appeal: Stop the madness. Invest in renewable energy now. End the war with nature.”

Liz Truss to be next UK PM after winning party vote
LONDON: 05:09:2022: Britain’s Conservative party Monday announced Liz Truss as its new leader to succeed Prime Minister Boris Johnson and confront Britain’s deepest economic crisis in decades.
The foreign secretary comfortably beat her rival, former finance minister Rishi Sunak, by about 57%-43% after a gruelling summer-long contest decided by just over 170,000 Conservative members — a tiny sliver of Britain’s electorate.
In a short victory speech at the announcement in a central London convention hall, Truss said it was an "honour" to be elected after undergoing "one of the longest job interviews in history".
"I campaigned as a Conservative, and I will govern as a Conservative," she said, touting Tory values of low taxes and personal responsibility.
Truss vowed a "bold plan" to address tax cuts and the energy crisis.
Details are expected in the coming days.
Truss, 47, will be only the UK’s third female prime minister following Theresa May and Margaret Thatcher.
She will formally take office on Tuesday, after Johnson tenders his resignation to Queen Elizabeth II.

Death toll tops 1,000 as rains continue to pour in Pakistan
28 Aug 2022: Web desk: The death toll from ravaging monsoon floods in Pakistan crossed 1,000 as several countries, including Qatar and Iran, pledged emergency support in the wake of a deluge described as a “humanitarian disaster of epic proportions”.
The toll since June has reached 1,033 with 119 people dying in the last 24 hours, the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) said on Sunday.
It warned of “very high” level flooding in some areas alongside the Kabul and Indus Rivers, particularly in Nowshera in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) province and Kalabagh and Chashma in Punjab province.
Large parts of the country remain submerged – particularly the provinces of Balochistan, KP and Sindh in the south – as heavy rains continue to lash parts of the country. At least 347 people have died in Sindh followed by Balochistan (238) and KP (226).
The annual monsoon is essential for irrigating crops and replenishing lakes and dams across the Indian subcontinent, but each year it also brings a wave of destruction. This year, precipitation in some regions was 600 percent higher than average.
Sherry Rehman, a Pakistani senator and the country’s top climate official, said in a video posted on Twitter that Pakistan is experiencing a “serious climate catastrophe, one of the hardest in the decade”.
“We are at the moment at the ground zero of the front line of extreme weather events, in an unrelenting cascade of heatwaves, forest fires, flash floods, multiple glacial lake outbursts, flood events and now the monster monsoon of the decade is wreaking non-stop havoc throughout the country,” she said.
Officials say this year’s catastrophic flooding has affected more than 33 million people – one in seven Pakistanis – destroying crops, livestock, and nearly a million homes.
The NDMA said more than 809,000 hectares (two million acres) of cultivated crops have been wiped out, 3,451 kilometres (2,150 miles) of roads destroyed, and 149 bridges washed away.
Khaista Rehman, 55, no relation to the climate minister, took shelter with his wife and three children on the side of the Islamabad-Peshawar highway after his home in Charsadda was submerged overnight.
The government declared the devastating floods a “national emergency” and is seeking aid from friendly countries.
“We’re seeing complete devastation – hundreds of thousands of collapsed houses, more than a thousand people injured. It is clear that this is a massive humanitarian and climate emergency,”
Sources said rescue efforts were further complicated by “ice-cold” water temperatures, with much of the floodwaters coming from mountainous areas.
“The water is gushing and inundating the villagers, and that of course poses a grave threat,” he said. “There’s extensive damage to property… People are taking shelter under plastic sheets on top of poles. They’ve been telling us that they’ve been getting help from the local population who are bringing them food and water. However, they say they’re in bad need of tents and tarpaulins.”
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif postponed an official trip to the United Kingdom as he appealed for funds from friendly countries and international institutions.
Sharif visited flooding victims in city of Jafferabad in Balochistan on Sunday. He vowed the government would provide housing to all those who lost their homes.
Sharif on Saturday delivered relief supplies to those affected in the flood-hit Sindh province. He was seen dropping relief packages from a helicopter to people below. Earlier on Saturday, the prime minister surveyed damage around the province and met with displaced people at a relief camp.
Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan – among other leaders – spoke to Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif over the grim flood situation.
French President Emmanuel Macron tweeted his support for Pakistan. “France stands ready to provide help,” he said in this tweet.
The Qatar Red Crescent Society on Saturday announced the allocation of $100,000 for the flood victims.

Protests erupt against ‘abduction, forced conversion’ of Sikh woman in KPK

KPK: August 22, 2022: Sanat Singh a close relative of, 25years old Dina Kumari a sikh , government teacher, said that Kumari went to duty on Saturday and did not return home,” her family had started a search for her but it was in vain said singh.
He said the lady’s family members, along with other community members, had gathered in front of Pir Baba police station on Saturday — in whose limits the incident happened — and demanded that police register a first information report (FIR) of the alleged incident, but the police refused to do so.
“When police showed reluctance to register an FIR, the family staged a protest outside the police station,” he said, adding that subsequently, the police had assured them of recovering the missing woman.
On August 21, the Sikh community again approached the police who informed them that she was recovered and she had married her neighbour, a Muslim man, in court.
“She was engaged and her marriage was planned for next month,” Singh said, alleging that she was forcibly converted to Islam and married.
Another Sikh community leader, Radash Singh Tony, claimed that the woman was kidnapped, forcibly converted and married off but the police were playing the role of a “silent spectator”.
He said that when the community members met the district police officer on Saturday night, he had assured them that Kumari would be handed over to the family, but on Sunday, the police misbehaved with the family members and did not hand her over or register their report.
Tony demanded that the government reunite Kumari to the family.
Meanwhile, Buner DPO Abdur Rasheed rejected the family’s allegation, saying that the police recovered the woman and produced her before a magistrate in a local sessions court where she recorded her statement, confirming in the court that she converted to Islam and contracted marriage of her own free will and submitted the relevant documents.
He added that the court asked the police to move her to Darul Aman and provide her security.
“The case is in the court. If the court orders of to register an FIR, the police will,” the DPO added.
