Happy Birthday, One, Holy, Catholic and Apostolic Church!

Today we rejoice not simply in a tradition, but in a living mysteryโ€”the birth of the Church at Pentecost, when the Holy Spirit descended upon the apostles like a rushing wind and tongues of fire. From that moment, fear was transformed into courage, confusion into mission, and silence into proclamation. The Church was no longer locked behind closed doors; it was sent forth into the world.

To call this the โ€œbirthday of the Churchโ€ is to recognize that the Church is not merely an institution, but a Spirit-filled body of believers united in Christ. The โ€œOneโ€ Church speaks of unity amidst diversityโ€”many nations, languages, and cultures, yet one faith and one baptism. The โ€œHolyโ€ Church is not holy because of human perfection, but because it is continually sanctified by Godโ€™s grace. The โ€œCatholicโ€ Church is universal, embracing all peoples and all corners of the world. The โ€œApostolicโ€ Church stands firm on the foundation of the apostles, faithfully passing on the teaching and mission of Christ.

Pentecost reminds us that the Church is always being renewed. The same Spirit who empowered the first disciples continues to breathe life into every generationโ€”calling the fearful to courage, the weary to hope, and the divided to communion. It is a reminder that faith is not meant to remain inside churches alone, but to be lived in families, communities, and the world.

So as we say, โ€œHappy Birthday, One, Holy, Catholic and Apostolic Church,โ€ we are also praying: Come, Holy Spirit, renew Your Church once more. Ignite our hearts with love, strengthen our faith, and send us forth as witnesses of Christโ€™s living presence in the world today.

CATHOLICS, TAKE NOTE: THE PASCHAL CANDLE SHALL BE REMOVED AFTER THE FINAL MASS ON PENTECOST SUNDAY

One of the most visible signs of the Easter season is the presence of the Easter, or Paschal, Candle in the sanctuary. Placed near the ambo or pulpit, it is solemnly lit during every public Mass throughout the season as a symbol of the Risen Christ.

According to the Roman Missal, the Paschal Candle remains in the sanctuary until the conclusion of the final Mass of Pentecost Sunday. After the Easter season ends, the candle is extinguished and transferred to the baptistery, where it is kept in a place of honor. From there, it is used during baptisms and funerals โ€” reminding the faithful of Christโ€™s victory over sin and death.

In earlier centuries, however, the Paschal Candle was extinguished on the Feast of the Ascension. Dom Prosper Guรฉranger explains that after the Gospel, an acolyte would climb the ambo and extinguish the candle, symbolizing Christโ€™s Ascension into Heaven forty days after His Resurrection. This beautiful custom invited the faithful to lift their hearts toward Heaven where Christ reigns.

Following the liturgical reforms of the 20th century, the Church retained the Paschal Candle in the sanctuary until Pentecost. This emphasizes that Pentecost is the completion of the Easter season and highlights the profound connection between Christโ€™s Resurrection and the coming of the Holy Spirit.

Though the Paschal Candle primarily symbolizes Christ Himself, it also serves as a powerful reminder that the joy of Easter does not end at Ascension, but reaches its fulfillment at Pentecost.

PENTECOST SUNDAY MARKS THE BIRTHDAY OF THE CHURCH

Pentecost marks the birthday of the Church because it is on this day that Pentecost descended upon the Apostles, transforming them from fearful followers into bold proclaimers of the Gospel.

Before Pentecost, the disciples were hidden in fear after the crucifixion of Jesus. But when the Holy Spirit came upon them like a rushing wind and tongues of fire, everything changed. They were filled with courage, wisdom, and power to go out and preach Christ to all nations.

This moment is considered the โ€œbirthโ€ of the Church because it was the beginning of its public mission โ€” the moment the Gospel was no longer kept in a small room but was proclaimed to the whole world.

From that day onward, the Church became alive and active, guided not by human strength alone, but by the power of the Holy Spirit.

Pentecost reminds us that the Church is not just a human institution, but a living body continually renewed by Godโ€™s Spirit. And just as the first disciples were strengthened, we too are called to be renewed, empowered, and sent forth today.

Come, Holy Spiritโ€”renew Your Church and renew our hearts. ๐Ÿ•Š๏ธ

UPCOMING DATES TO REMEMBER

Here are the Upcoming Dates to Remember for the month of May and early June, with a brief introduction and meaning for each celebration:

May 13 โ€” Feast of Our Lady of Fatima
This feast commemorates the apparitions of the Blessed Virgin Mary to three shepherd children in Fatima, Portugal, in 1917. During these apparitions, Mary called for prayer, repentance, and conversion, especially through the daily Rosary. This celebration reminds us of Maryโ€™s maternal concern for the world and her urgent invitation to return to God with sincere hearts.

May 17 โ€” Ascension of the Lord
The Ascension marks the moment when Jesus Christ returned to heaven forty days after His Resurrection. It signifies the completion of His earthly mission and the promise that He remains with us in a new way. This feast invites us to lift our hearts to heaven and live with hope, knowing that Christ prepares a place for us.

May 24 โ€” Pentecost Sunday
Pentecost celebrates the coming of the Holy Spirit upon the Apostles, empowering them to proclaim the Gospel boldly. Often called the โ€œbirthday of the Church,โ€ it reminds us that the Spirit continues to guide, strengthen, and renew us today. It is a call to live with courage and to share Godโ€™s love with others.

May 31 โ€” Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary
This feast recalls Maryโ€™s visit to her cousin Elizabeth, bringing Christโ€™s presence into her home. It is a beautiful image of charity in actionโ€”Mary did not keep the gift of Jesus to herself but shared Him with others. We are invited to do the same by bringing kindness, service, and Christโ€™s presence into the lives of those around us.

May 31 โ€” Holy Trinity Sunday
Celebrated on the same day this year, Trinity Sunday honors the central mystery of our faith: one God in three Personsโ€”Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Though a mystery beyond full human understanding, it reveals that God is a communion of love, inviting us to live in unity, relationship, and self-giving love.

June 4 โ€” Corpus Christi
Also known as the Solemnity of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ, this feast celebrates the real presence of Jesus in the Eucharist. It is a profound reminder that Christ remains with usโ€”Body, Blood, Soul, and Divinityโ€”in the Holy Mass. This day deepens our reverence for the Eucharist and calls us to become what we receive: the Body of Christ in the world.

May these celebrations guide us through the month with deeper faith, renewed devotion, and a heart always open to Godโ€™s grace. ๐ŸŒธ
