Walking Together Toward the Future
Fr. Ramiro Casale, OCD

Saturday 25th

We are reminded that the OCDS is not simply preserving a beautiful heritage, but living a vocation that the Church and the world need today. Rooted in the spirituality of Saint Teresa and Saint John of the Cross, we are called to be men and women of prayer, fraternity, and mission. Let us give thanks for the graces of the past, embrace the challenges of the present with courage, and look to the future with hope. May our communities become true schools of prayer and joyful witnesses to the experience of God. The future of the OCDS depends on our fidelity to the charism and our willingness to pass it on to new generations. Let us be renewed in our commitment to holiness, confident that the Lord continues to walk with us. “Now is the time to walk.”

ABOUT THE ORDER: OCDS CONSTITUTION
II - FOLLOWING JESUS IN THE TERESIAN SECULAR CARMEL

11. Following Jesus as members of the Secular Order is expressed by the promise to strive for evangelical perfection in the spirit of the evangelical counsels of chastity, poverty and obedience and through the beatitudes. By means of this promise the member’s baptismal commitment is strengthened for the service of God’s plan in the world. This promise is a pledge to pursue personal holiness, which necessarily carries with it a commitment to serving the Church in faithfulness to the Teresian Carmelite charism. The promise is taken before the members of the community, representing the whole Church and in the presence of the Delegate of the Superior of the Order.

Summary:
As Secular Discalced Carmelites, we follow Jesus by striving for holiness through the evangelical counsels of chastity, poverty, and obedience, lived according to our state in life and inspired by the Beatitudes. The Promise strengthens our baptismal commitment, dedicating us more fully to God's service and His plan for the world. It is a commitment to personal sanctification and faithful service to the Church, lived according to the Teresian Carmelite charism. Made before the community and the Church's representative, this Promise expresses our desire to live the Gospel more deeply as disciples of Christ in the spirit of Carmel.

CATECHESIS ABOUT THE ORDER:
Obedience in the Vows of the Discalced Carmelite Friars and Nuns, and in the Promise of the Secular Discalced Carmelites (OCDS)

Brief Explanation:
OBEDIENCE IN THE VOWS OF OCD FRIARS AND NUNS:
- The vow of obedience is one of the three evangelical counsels professed by Discalced Carmelite friars and nuns, alongside chastity and poverty.
- This vow entails a commitment to obey the legitimate superiors of the Order in all things that pertain to their religious life and mission.
- Obedience is understood as a way of conforming one’s will to God’s will, expressed through the directives of the community and its leaders.
- It fosters humility, detachment from personal preferences, and a spirit of service.
- Through obedience, friars and nuns participate in the mystery of Christ’s obedience to the Father, which is central to Carmelite spirituality.
- It is a lifelong commitment that helps maintain the unity and mission of the community.

OBEDIENCE IN THE PROMISE OF THE SECULAR DISCALCED CARMELITES (OCDS):
- Secular Discalced Carmelites do not take formal vows but make a promise to live according to the evangelical counsels in the spirit of the Carmelite Order.
- The promise of obedience involves striving to be open to God’s will as expressed through the guidance of the community and its formation leaders.
- It is adapted to their secular state of life, meaning obedience is lived in the context of their family, work, and social responsibilities.
- This promise encourages members to grow in humility and docility to God’s will, fostering a deeper spiritual life and commitment to Carmelite values.
- While not a formal vow, this promise is a serious commitment to live in harmony with the Order’s charism and mission.

SUMMARY:
- For friars and nuns, obedience is a solemn vow of submission to the Order’s superiors, reflecting Christ’s obedience to the Father.
- For secular members, obedience is a promise to live attentively and humbly to God’s will within their life circumstances, guided by the community.
- Both forms emphasize humility, service, and conformity to God’s will as essential to Carmelite spirituality.
