Feast of the Baptism of the Lord
The Feast of the Baptism of the Lord serves as a liturgical bridge between the Christmas season and Ordinary Time. Throughout Christmas, we reflected on the mystery of the Incarnation through events such as the Nativity, Presentation in the Temple, and Epiphany. Today, we see Jesus manifest Himself to the world as He begins His public ministry, choosing to do so through an act of profound humility and solidarity with fallen humanity. Though sinless, Jesus freely submits to John’s baptism of repentance, identifying Himself with sinners out of love and a desire to unite Himself fully with us, taking upon Himself our sins and their consequences.
At the Jordan, the entire Trinity is revealed: the Son is baptized, the Spirit descends like a dove, and the Father’s voice proclaims His delight in His Son. This moment not only marks the beginning of Jesus’ mission but also gives lasting power to every act of repentance. Each time we repent, we encounter Christ anew, receive an outpouring of the Holy Spirit, and deepen our identity as adopted sons and daughters of the Father. As we celebrate the Lord’s Baptism, we rejoice not only in our own baptismal calling, but also in the ongoing grace that renews our union with the Holy Trinity whenever we humbly turn back to God.
