FEAST DAY OF SAINT MAXIMILIAN KOLBE

St. Maximilian Kolbe was born Rajmund Kolbe on January 8, 1894, in Zduńska Wola, Poland. Growing up in a devout family, he was deeply influenced by his mother's strong faith and his father's fight for Poland's independence. At a young age, Rajmund experienced a profound vision of the Virgin Mary, who presented him with two crowns: one white, symbolizing purity, and the other red, representing martyrdom. Without hesitation, he chose both.
This vision marked the beginning of Rajmund's spiritual journey. He joined the Conventual Franciscans at 13 and took the name Maximilian. As he grew in faith, he became passionate about spreading devotion to the Immaculate Virgin Mary. He founded the Militia Immaculatae, a movement dedicated to converting sinners and enemies of the Church through Mary's intercession.
Maximilian's zeal for souls led him to establish Niepokalanów, a thriving community of friars focused on publishing and evangelization. The community produced a magazine, Rycerz Niepokalanej (The Knight of the Immaculate), which reached a staggering one million copies. When World War II erupted, Maximilian continued his work, sheltering refugees, including Jews, and promoting forgiveness and love.
In 1941, the N***s arrested Maximilian and sent him to Auschwitz. There, he volunteered to take the place of a prisoner, Franciszek Gajowniczek, who was sentenced to death by starvation. For two weeks, Maximilian led his fellow prisoners in prayer and hymns, offering them spiritual comfort. On August 14, 1941, he was executed with a lethal injection of carbolic acid, dying with the name of Mary on his lips.
Maximilian's sacrifice was recognized by the Church, and he was canonized by Pope John Paul II in 1982. Today, he is venerated as the patron saint of drug addicts, prisoners, families, and journalists, inspiring millions worldwide with his unwavering faith and devotion to Mary.
