MEMORIAL OF SAINT PHILIP NERI, Priest

Today, the Church celebrates Saint Philip Neri, known as the “Apostle of Rome” and remembered for his joyful spirit, deep holiness, and boundless love for God. From childhood, Philip was known as “Pippo Buono” or “good little Philip” because of his cheerful character and sincere piety. Though offered a comfortable life and inheritance, he chose instead to follow the call of the Holy Spirit and dedicate himself entirely to Christ.

Living simply in Rome, Saint Philip devoted himself to prayer, charity, and the conversion of souls. He cared for the sick, visited the poor, spent long hours in prayer, and inspired many through kindness, humor, and genuine joy. A profound mystical experience during prayer filled his heart with such intense love for God that it transformed his entire life and ministry.

As a priest and confessor, Saint Philip guided countless souls closer to God through compassion and wisdom. He later founded the Congregation of the Oratory, dedicated to prayer, preaching, and the sacraments. May Saint Philip Neri teach us to serve God with joy, humility, and love.

MEMORIAL OF MARY, MOTHER OF THE CHURCH

Today, the Church honors the Blessed Virgin Mary under the beautiful title “Mother of the Church,” recognizing her loving and maternal role in the life of every Christian. At the foot of the Cross, Jesus entrusted His mother to Saint John with the words, “Behold, your mother” (John 19:27). In that moment, the Church has long understood that Mary was given not only to John, but to all believers as their spiritual mother.

From the earliest centuries of Christianity, the faithful have reflected deeply on Mary’s unique place in God’s plan of salvation. As the Mother of Christ, the Head of the Church, she is also the mother of His Body, the Church itself. Present at Pentecost as the Holy Spirit descended upon the Apostles, Mary accompanied the birth of the Church through prayer, faith, and maternal care.

In 2018, Pope Francis officially established this memorial to remind the faithful that Christian life must always remain close to Christ, the Eucharist, and the Blessed Mother. From Heaven, Mary continues to intercede for us, guiding us toward her Son with tenderness and love. May we entrust ourselves fully to her motherly care and protection.

PENTECOST SUNDAY

Today, the Church celebrates the glorious Solemnity of Pentecost, the day the Holy Spirit descended upon the Apostles and disciples gathered in the upper room. Fifty days after the Resurrection and ten days after the Ascension of the Lord, the promise of Jesus was fulfilled as tongues of fire rested upon them and they were filled with the Holy Spirit. Empowered by divine grace, the fearful disciples became courageous witnesses of the Gospel, boldly proclaiming Christ to people of every nation.

Pentecost is known as the birthday of the Church because it marked the beginning of the Apostles’ mission to bring salvation to the world. Through the preaching of Saint Peter, thousands were baptized, communities of believers were formed, and the Church began its mission to the ends of the earth.

The same Holy Spirit continues to guide and sanctify the Church today through the Sacraments, Sacred Scripture, Sacred Tradition, and the gifts poured into every baptized believer. May the Holy Spirit fill our hearts anew with wisdom, courage, faith, and holiness, so that we may faithfully live as witnesses of Christ in the world.

SOLEMNITY OF THE ASCENSION OF THE LORD

Today, the Church joyfully celebrates the Solemnity of the Ascension of the Lord, commemorating the glorious moment when Jesus Christ ascended body and soul into Heaven forty days after His Resurrection. Before the eyes of His Apostles, the risen Lord returned to the Father and took His seat at the right hand of God, completing His earthly mission of salvation.

The Ascension reminds us that Jesus did not abandon humanity but instead opened the gates of Heaven for us. Having united divine and human nature through the Incarnation, Christ brought our humanity into eternal glory. What He accomplished through His Passion, Death, Resurrection, and Ascension gives us hope that we, too, are called to share in the fullness of life with God.

Tradition holds that the Ascension took place on the Mount of Olives near Jerusalem, where the Chapel of the Ascension stands today as a reminder of this sacred event. Celebrated since apostolic times, this feast invites all believers to lift their hearts toward Heaven and remain faithful to Christ’s mission on earth.

May the Ascended Lord strengthen our faith, deepen our hope, and lead us ever closer to His eternal Kingdom.

MEMORIAL OF SAINT ISIDORE THE FARMER (LABRADOR)

Born into poverty in Madrid, Saint Isidore the Laborer lived a humble life as a farm worker, yet became a shining witness of holiness. Though he lacked formal education, he was rich in faith, attending daily Mass and placing God at the center of his life. Together with his wife, Saint Maria de la Cabeza, he generously shared what little they had with the poor.

Known for his deep prayer, Isidore’s life was marked by extraordinary grace. Legends tell of angels helping him in his work, of food multiplying, and of prayers answered in miraculous ways. Yet his true greatness lay not in miracles, but in his quiet fidelity—offering each day’s labor as an act of love for God.

Canonized in 1622 by Pope Gregory XV alongside great saints, Isidore remains a model for all workers. His life reminds us that holiness is not reserved for the learned or powerful, but is found in daily duties done with love, humility, and unwavering faith in God.

FEAST OF SAINT MATTHIAS, Apostle

After the betrayal and death of Judas Iscariot, the Apostles sought to restore their number to twelve, a number deeply rooted in the twelve tribes of Israel. Guided by Saint Peter, the early disciples gathered and prayed for God’s guidance. From among them, two were chosen as candidates, and through prayer and casting lots, Saint Matthias was selected to take Judas’ place (cf. Acts 1:23–26).

This moment reveals an important truth about the Church: the apostolic mission did not end with the original Twelve but was meant to continue. Even before Pentecost, Matthias was counted among the Apostles, showing that the Church, under the guidance of the Holy Spirit, would grow and endure through apostolic succession.

Though little is known about his later life, tradition holds that Saint Matthias preached the Gospel in distant lands and ultimately gave his life as a martyr. His quiet yet faithful witness reminds us that God calls ordinary disciples to extraordinary missions. Like Matthias, we are invited to respond with faith, perseverance, and trust in God’s plan for His Church.

MEMORIAL OF OUR LADY OF FATIMA

In 1916 and 1917, three humble shepherd children—Lúcia dos Santos, Francisco Marto, and Jacinta Marto—received heavenly visits that would mark one of the most profound spiritual events of modern times. First came the Angel of Peace, teaching them prayers of faith, adoration, and reparation. Then, beginning May 13, 1917, the Blessed Virgin Mary appeared as Our Lady of the Rosary, calling the world to prayer, sacrifice, and conversion.

At the Apparitions of Fátima, Our Lady urged daily prayer of the rosary, devotion to her Immaculate Heart, and acts of reparation for sin. She warned of the consequences of ignoring God, yet promised peace if her message was heeded. Her final apparition on October 13 was witnessed by tens of thousands through the Miracle of the Sun.

Though Francisco and Jacinta soon passed into eternal life, Lúcia carried the message forward. Today, Fátima reminds us that simple faith, daily sacrifice, and sincere prayer can bring about the conversion of hearts and the salvation of souls.
