Carlos Antonio Santos-Viola: The Architect Who Built INC Churches While Remaining a Devout Catholic

Carlos Antonio Santos-Viola, FPIA, remains a towering figure in Philippine architecture, celebrated for his distinctive designs of Iglesia ni Cristo (INC) churches. Despite his deep professional involvement with the INC, he remained steadfast in his Catholic faith, exemplifying a rare blend of creative genius and unwavering personal conviction.

Born on April 8, 1912, in San Miguel, Bulacan, Carlos was one of six children in the Santos family. His formative years at the Ateneo de Manila honed his discipline, leadership, and artistic sensibilities. He later graduated as part of the pioneering batch of the College of Architecture at the University of Santo Tomas in 1935, where he studied under esteemed architects like Juan F. Nakpil and Tomas Mapua.

Carlos began his career working with Juan Nakpil, one of the Philippines' National Artists for Architecture, and eventually opened his own practice. It was through his early collaboration with Nakpil on the INC Bishop's Palace in San Juan, Metro Manila, that Carlos was introduced to the INC community. This marked the start of his long association with designing their iconic churches.

Known for his innovative approach, Santos-Viola infused functionality and structural integrity into his work, complemented by striking 20th-century geometric forms with Gothic revival and Baroque elements. His designs, such as the INC Central Office in Quezon City, became hallmarks of INC architecture and were built nationwide.

Despite his close professional ties with INC, Carlos remained a devout Catholic throughout his life. He ministered for Our Lady of Lourdes Church in Quezon City and declined multiple invitations to join the INC, citing his ideological differences. His dedication to his faith never wavered, even as he built places of worship for another denomination.

Carlos Santos-Viola’s legacy transcends his architectural achievements. He demonstrated that it is possible to respect and work for communities of different beliefs while remaining steadfast in one’s own convictions. His life is a testament to the harmony of faith, integrity, and professional excellence.
