POPE TO PRIESTS: UPHOLD LITURGICAL TEXTS AND REGULATIONS

Pope Leo XIV on Wednesday reminded priests and liturgical ministers to faithfully uphold the Church’s liturgical texts and regulations, saying respect for the sacred liturgy reflects humility before God and fidelity to the Church.

Speaking during his General Audience at Saint Peter’s Square, the pope reflected on the Second Vatican Council’s Constitution Sacrosanctum Concilium, which focused on liturgical reform and renewal in the Catholic Church. Leo XIV emphasized that authentic reform must remain rooted in Catholic tradition while remaining open to legitimate development suited to the needs of the faithful.

“I therefore urge all those called to prepare the celebration of the divine mysteries, in particular priests who exercise the ministry of liturgical presidency, to always uphold that respect for the texts and regulations of the liturgy,” the pope said. He added that such respect should flow from “an inner attitude of openness and trust in God,” together with “sincere fidelity to ecclesial communion.”

The pontiff also cautioned against unauthorized changes in liturgical celebrations, citing the Council’s warning against anyone independently altering liturgical practices. He stressed that reforms within the Church should undergo careful theological, historical, and pastoral discernment in order to preserve unity among the faithful and deepen participation in the Paschal Mystery of Christ.

“I encourage all priests to respect the texts and norms of the liturgy with openness, humility, trust in God’s greatness, and with sincere fidelity to ecclesial communion,” the pope said in remarks in St. Peterʼs Square.

A Heartfelt Thank You from the Sagada Youth

The Bontoc District Youth Camp, held from April 12–15, 2026, at Bauko Catholic School, was more than just a trip. It was a wonderful time for 39 young people from the different Basic Ecclesial Communities (BECs) of Saint Joseph Patron of the Universal Church Mission Parish in Sagada to grow in faith and make new friends.

As we look back, our hearts are full of thanks. An event this big—taking care of nearly 40 young people for four days—could only happen because our community helped us so much.

To the Organizers and Leaders
We would like to express our sincere gratitude to the organizers of the Bontoc District Youth Camp most especially Rev. Fr. Michael Tokoyen and Miss May L. Ngayawon. Thank you for your hard work, your vision, and for creating a safe and meaningful space for our youth to gather. We appreciate the time and effort you put into planning the sessions and activities that made this camp such a success.

To the People Who Guided and Helped Us
We want to say a very special thank you to those who gave their time to be with the youth. A huge thank you goes to Rev. Tony B Gomowad who volunteered not just to join the camp, but to watch over and protect our participants from Aguid BEC. His presence made the youth feel safe and guided.

We also send our warmest "Iyaman" to Ma’am Gaudencia Guitilen and Mrs. Ferdinanda O. Bagyan ( Damzkee Evan). These two kind women worked hard in the kitchen as our volunteer cooks, making sure everyone had good meals throughout the camp.
We would also like to express our deep thanks to Manang Peachy Pacien in Bauko. She very kindly opened her home and allowed some of our participants to use her house to take a bath. Her hospitality made a big difference in the comfort of our youth.

Most importantly, we thank our Parish Priest, Rev. Fr. Allen Basilio. His constant support and care made this whole trip possible.

To Our Donors and Helpers
We are so grateful to the families and individuals who shared what they had. Whether you gave money or "in-kind" gifts—like the trays of eggs, sacks of rice, fresh vegetables, and other supplies—each gift showed the true spirit of Ob-obbo in our parish. Because of your kindness, our youth were well-fed and cared for, so they could focus on the camp activities. May God bless each and every one of you for your kindness.

To Our Youth Participants
To the 39 young men and women who joined us: thank you. Thank you for saying "Yes"—for trying something new, sharing your talents, and being open to learning more about God.

We truly pray that the things you learned and the fun you had at Bauko Catholic School will stay with you. We hope you come back to your BECs with new energy, ready to help out in the church and our community. We hope this experience helps you grow to be the best person you can be—someone who is kind, helpful, and follows God's way.

We move forward with happy hearts. To everyone who helped us: Thank you, and may God’s blessings be with you all.

Pope Leo XIV on Wednesday said priestly ministry in the Catholic Church, entrusted only to men, is understood in light of apostolic succession and called for priests who are “ardent with evangelical charity” and “courageous missionaries.”

✝️ WHY DON’T CATHOLICS CALL CHAPTER AND VERSES WHILE READING THE BIBLE AT MASS?😳🤔
_______________
A young man once asked me:
👉 “Why is it that Catholics don’t mention the chapters and verses when reading the Bible at Mass?

My pastor told us it’s because Catholics don’t want people to know the Bible or the truth.”

I smiled at him and replied:
“If you already believe your pastor’s answer, why ask me?”

He paused, then said: “Because I’m not convinced.”

So I gave him the real answer.

1️⃣ READING VS. PROCLAIMING

Catholics don’t just read the Bible at Mass.
We proclaim it.

📖 To “read” is to look at text and understand.
✝️ To “proclaim” is to announce a message with authority.

At Mass, the Word of God is not private study, it is a public proclamation of God’s voice to His people.

That’s why the lector ends with:
👉 “The Word of the Lord.”
And the deacon or priest ends with:
👉 “The Gospel of the Lord.”

It is not our word. It is God speaking now.

2️⃣ THE LITURGY IS NOT A BIBLE STUDY

Many don’t realize: Catholics already know the readings before Mass.

Every Catholic who owns a Missal or Liturgical Calendar knows:
👉 The readings of today.
👉 The readings of tomorrow.
👉 Even the readings of March 17, 2026, years ahead!

Why? Because the Church has a 3-year cycle of Scripture readings, carefully designed so that across Sundays, weekdays, and feasts, the entire story of salvation unfolds.

So Mass is not the first time Catholics hear the readings. They are meant to be read at home before Mass, so that during Mass we don’t “study” them, but hear God speak through them.

3️⃣ WHY WE DON’T ANNOUNCE CHAPTER AND VERSE

If the lector says: “First Reading: Isaiah chapter 55, verses 1–3,” what happens?

📌 People grab their Bibles, flip pages, and start “reading along.”
But in that moment, the Mass shifts from proclamation to study.

And the Church is clear: Mass is not a classroom. It is worship.

At Mass, we don’t “search the text.”
We listen to the voice of the Spirit speaking through the proclamation.

That’s why chapter and verse are intentionally omitted, not to hide the Bible, but to lift the Bible above private reading into communal proclamation.

4️⃣ THE CHURCH’S WISDOM

Think about it: In the early Church there were no chapter and verse numbers.

Those were added in the 13th and 16th centuries—for study and reference.

The Mass preserves the ancient way of hearing Scripture:
👉 Not distracted by numbers.
👉 Not reduced to proof-texts.
👉 But heard as a living word addressed to the people of God.

That’s why after the reading, the people respond:
🙌 “Thanks be to God.”
Because they have heard God Himself speaking.

5️⃣ SO,

The next time someone says:
👉 “Catholics don’t announce chapter and verse because they don’t want people to know the Bible…”

You can answer with confidence:
- Catholics don’t just read, we proclaim.
- The readings are already known in advance.
- Mass is not a classroom, it is worship.
- Scripture is not hidden, it is made living and present.

At Mass, God’s Word is not a dead text, it is a voice from heaven, proclaimed in the assembly, received in faith, and sealed in the Eucharist.

🙏 So when you hear “The Word of the Lord”… don’t rush to check numbers.
Bow your heart and answer: “Thanks be to God.”

God bless you 🙏
