A pastor in China has reportedly been released after spending 12 years in prison for his faith in Christ.
Zhang Shaojie was arrested back in 2013. He was the leader of a large house church—unregistered and therefore considered illegal by the government. Reports from human rights and Christian organizations say he was sentenced under charges that many believe were used to suppress his ministry, not address real crimes.
For over a decade, he remained imprisoned.
Twelve years.
Think about that. Not for violence. Not for theft. But for leading a church and refusing to compromise his faith.
From what’s been reported, his case became a symbol of the broader issue of religious freedom in China—especially for Christians who choose to gather outside of state-approved churches.
And now, after all that time, he’s been released.
There’s something sobering about stories like this.
Because while many of us live in places where faith can be expressed freely, there are still people around the world who pay a real cost for it.
This isn’t just history. It’s happening now.
At the same time, stories like this remind you what people actually believe about Christ. You don’t endure something like that for over a decade unless you’re convinced it’s true.
“Remember those in prison, as though you were in prison with them…” — Hebrews 13:3 (CSB)
Freedom is something we often take for granted.
Faith like this is something we shouldn’t.
