Saints of the Day (April 5)

San Vicente Ferrer at Santa Crescencia Hoess

SAN VICENTE FERRER
Sa isang sanggol na sumilang sa Balensiya, Espanya, noong 1350 ay inihasik ng kanyang mga magulang ang tatlong bagay: ang matimyas na pagmamahal sa Diyos, sa Mahal na Birhen at sa mga maralita. Ang ibinunga nito'y si San Vicente Ferrer, ang mapaghimalang predikador at "anghel ng paghuhukom."

Ang isang daigdig na lipos ng karangalan at kayamanan ay kanyang tinalikdan upang maging kasapi sa Orden ni Santo Domingo at pagkaraa'y naging propesor ng pilosopiya sa pinakatanyag na unibersidad ng Lerida, Katalonya. Naging konsehero din siya nina Haring Juan ng Aragon at Pedro de Luna (papa sa Abinyon). Samantala, ang katanyagan ni Vicente (Latin, nagtatagumpay) ay lumalaganap sa lahat ng panig. Dinudumog siya ng mga tao sa kanyang pangangaral.

Noong Oktubre 3, 1398, nagkaroon siya ng isang pangitain; nagpakita sa kanya ang Panginoon, kasama sina San Domingo at San Francisco de Asis at inuutusan siyang mangaral sa mga tao. Naglakbay siya sa mga bayan-bayan sa Espanya, Pransiya at Italya upang ipangaral ang apat na huling hantungan ng tao — ang kamatayan, paghuhukom, impiyerno at langit. Maraming Hudyo, Moro at ereheng nagbalik-loob sa Diyos at nagsisi ng kanilang pagkakasala. Sa Granada, may 8,000 Moro ang naging Kristiyano; sa Salamanka, ang isang templong Hudyo ay ginawa niyang templong Kristiyano. Sinasabi na minsa'y binuhay niya ang isang patay upang mapatunayan lamang ang kanyang sinabing katotohanan.

Nang malapit na siyang pumanaw ay nakita rin niya, salamat sa kanyang pagmamalasakit, ang pagbabalik ng papa sa Roma mula sa Abinyon. Namatay si San Vicente sa Banes, Pransiya noong 1419.

ARAL: "Tatlong bagay ang kailangan upang makamtan ang kabanalan: ang pagtitiis sa lahat ng ating kahirapan, ang malimit sa pagdidilidili sa mga hirap at kamatayan ni Kristo at ang hangaring tayo'y libakin ng iba." (SAN VICENTE FERRER)

SANTA CRESCENCIA HOESS
Si Crescencia, anak ng isang manghahabi, ay isinilang noong 1682 sa maliit na bayan malapit sa Augsburg. Ang simbahan ang kanyang naging palaruan habang tinutulungan ang mga batang higit pang mahihirap kaysa kanya. Sa gulang na pitong taon, nakabisado na niya ang iba't ibang aral tungkol sa relihiyon kung kaya't pinayagan siyang makatanggap ng Sakramento ng Banal na Komunyon. Siya ay tinaguriang "munting anghel" sa kanilang bayan.

Nang siya'y lumaki ninais niyang pumasok sa kumbento ng mga Terciario ni San Francisco. Subalit mahirap lamang ang kumbento kung kaya't kinailangang humingi ng dote sa mga nagnanais na pumasok dito. Hindi tinanggap ng superyora ng kongregasyon si Crescencia dahil sa wala itong maibigay na dote. Namagitan ang Protestanteng alkalde ng bayan kung kaya't napilitan ang superyora na tanggapin si Crescencia. Hindi naging madali ang buhay niya sa loob ng kumbento.

Nang mahalal na superyora si Crescencia, umunlad ang kondisyong pinansyal ng kumbento at hinangaan siya dahil sa kanyang kabanalan. Di naglaon lumapit sa kanya ang mga prinsipe at prinsesa gayundin ang mga obispo at kardinal upang humingi ng payo. Sa kabila nito, nanatili ang kanyang kababaang-loob bilang isang tunay na anak ni San Francisco.

Nakaranas din si Crescencia ng iba't ibang sakit sa katawan tulad ng pananakit ng ulo at ngipin. Subalit ang pinakamatinding karamdamang naranasan niya ay ang unti-unting pagkalumpo at pagkabaluktot ng kanyang katawan tulad ng sa sanggol sa sinapupunan.

Tinanghal siya ni San Juan Pablo II bilang santo ng Simbahan noong 2001.

ARAL: Madalas inisip natin na ang paghawak ng pera ay hindi banal na gawain, subalit si Santa Crescencia ay may sapat na katalinuhan upang gamitin ang kanyang kakayahan sa ikabubuti ng mga kaluluwa, kung kaya't maraming pinuno ng pamahalaan at simbahan ang nagsadya sa kanya upang humingi ng payo.

St. Francis is one of the most venerated religious figures in Roman Catholic history. He founded the Franciscan orders, including the Poor Clares and the lay Third Order. He and St. Catherine of Siena are the patron saints of Italy, and he is also the patron saint of ecology and of animals.
