Is it okay to applaud at Mass?

Whether it be for the priest after a homily, for a musician, or even for the choir after the liturgy concludes, is this okay? And what about after weddings, confirmations, or baptisms?

Many have opinions, but over the years, various popes and religious leaders have expressed their thoughts on the matter.

In his book "The Spirit of the Liturgy," Pope Benedict XVI (then-Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger) wrote:
“Wherever applause breaks out in the liturgy because of some human achievement, it is a sure sign that the essence of liturgy has totally disappeared and been replaced by a kind of religious entertainment. Such attraction fades quickly – it cannot compete in the market of leisure pursuits, incorporating as it increasingly does various forms of religious titillation.”
Other popes have also contributed to the subject, including Pope Saint John XXIII and Pope Saint Pius X.

As the faithful waited for Pope Saint John XXIII’s arrival at a church outside of Rome, he said,
“I am very glad to have come here. But if I must express a wish, it is that in church you not shout out, that you not clap your hands, and that you not greet even the Pope, because ‘templum Dei, templum Dei.’ (‘The temple of God is the temple of God’)."
Pope Saint Pius X said,
“It is not fitting that the servant should be applauded in his Master’s house.”
Former Catholic Answers chaplain Father Vincent Serpa, O.P., also provided his opinion on an episode of Catholic Answers.
“Is it appropriate to applaud for the choir after Mass? Is this an approved practice?” the caller asks.

Father Serpa said,

“Absolutely not. It’s most inappropriate, and it’s the responsibility of the pastor to make sure that the congregation understands this. The choir is not singing as a matter of entertaining anybody. They’re singing to worship God. We don’t clap for prayer. We pray.”
“Again, that is not an option. If we were someplace else, it would be a different matter," he continues. "But liturgy is liturgy. It’s the worship of God, and it needs to be done in an appropriate way as the Church sees fit. It’s good that they appreciate the choir, but they can thank them outside. Applause is not appropriate at that time.”
“There are times when that’s called for, as in the ordination ceremony, when you are asked to give the response to the worthiness of the candidate for ordination. But this isn’t that. This is something else," Father Vincent adds. "You don’t clap at the end of Mass because you had a good time. That’s not what it’s about.”
However, while the popes, priests, and the faithful provide their input on applauding at Mass, there is no official Church teaching on the subject.

Many Church leaders, however—including Cardinal Francis Arinze—stress that we come to Mass to adore God, not to applaud human efforts or treat the liturgy as entertainment.

Cardinal Arinze, as Prefect of the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments, said:
“…when we come to Mass, we don’t come to clap. We don’t come to watch people, to admire people. We want to adore God, to thank Him, to ask Him pardon for our sins, and to ask Him for what we need.”
Furthermore, some argue that limited exceptions can be fitting at the very conclusion of certain joyful celebrations, such as weddings or baptisms, to express gratitude for God’s gifts and the community of faith.

In general, however, the faithful are encouraged to offer silent prayer or personal thanks afterward, preserving the sacred silence and reverence that allow the mystery of the Eucharist to resonate more deeply.

What do you think? Is it okay to applaud at Mass?

BLACK SATURDAY RECOLLECTION

We had a deeply moving Holy Saturday recollection, “A Pilgrimage Into Darkness,” led by Fr. Dan Cancino.

In the silence of Black Saturday, we were reminded that not all moments of faith are filled with clarity—sometimes, we are simply called to wait. And even in the darkness, when God seems silent, Christ is already there with us.

A powerful invitation to trust, to remain, and to encounter God even in our deepest struggles. 🙏

GOOD FRIDAY RECOLLECTION:
“BEFORD HE BREATHED HIS LAST”

Thankful for the Good Friday recollection led by Fr. Dennis Cagantas.

He reminded us that on the Cross, Jesus is stripped of everything and yet reveals the deepest truth of love. As we contemplate His suffering, we are also called to see and respond to the suffering of others, especially those forgotten and on the margins.

A powerful call to examine who we are when everything is taken away, and to choose love in a world that often sees people as expendable. 🙏

✝️ WHY IT IS CALLED “HOLY WEEK”… AND NOT JUST “THE LAST WEEK OF JESUS” 😳
___________________
Many people say:

“It’s the week before Easter.”

But the Church does not call it that.

She calls it:

👉 HOLY WEEK

That word is not decoration.
It is a judgment on the entire week.

Because something happens in these days that has never happened before…
and will never happen again.

✝️ “HOLY” DOES NOT MEAN CALM… IT MEANS SET APART FOR GOD

In Scripture, “holy” does not mean peaceful or gentle.

It means:

Set apart

Consecrated

Belonging entirely to God

So when the Church says “Holy Week,” she is saying:

👉 “These days do not belong to ordinary history.”
👉 “These days belong completely to God’s saving action.”

This is not just a week you remember.
It is a week that redefines reality itself.

✝️ THIS IS THE WEEK WHERE EVERYTHING CHANGES

Look closely at what happens:

A King enters… and is rejected

A disciple eats… and betrays

Bread becomes Flesh… for the first time

God is arrested… by His own creation

Innocence is condemned… by the guilty

The Creator is nailed… to His creation

Death meets Life… and loses

This is not normal time.

👉 This is holy time

✝️ THE HOLINESS COMES FROM WHAT CHRIST DOES

This week is holy, not because of human actions…
but because of what Christ accomplishes:

He institutes the Eucharist

He establishes the priesthood

He offers Himself as sacrifice

He enters death willingly

He opens the gates of Heaven

No prophet ever did this.
No king ever did this.

Only Christ.

✝️ THE SHOCKING TRUTH ABOUT HOLY WEEK

Here is what many miss:

👉 The most “holy” week… is also the most violent week.

Betrayal

Torture

Mockery

Crucifixion

How can that be “holy”?

Because holiness is not the absence of suffering.

👉 It is the presence of God… even in suffering.

And in this week, God is not distant from pain.

He enters it completely.

✝️ THIS WEEK EXPOSES THE HUMAN HEART

Holy Week reveals two things at once:

1. The depth of God’s love

2. The depth of human sin

People who shouted “Hosanna” now reject Him

A chosen Apostle betrays Him

A close friend denies Him

Leaders condemn Him

The crowd prefers a criminal

This week is holy…

Because it shows the truth about God
and the truth about us

✝️ WHY THE CHURCH SLOWS EVERYTHING DOWN

Notice something:

The Church does not rush this week.

Long readings

Deep silence

Extended liturgies

Why?

Because you are not meant to pass through Holy Week.

👉 You are meant to enter it.

To stand in the crowd.
To sit at the table.
To watch the Cross.

✝️ THE REAL MEANING OF HOLY WEEK FOR YOU

This is where it becomes personal.

Holy Week is not just about what Jesus did…

👉 It is about what you will do with what He did.

Will you follow Him… or walk away?

Will you stay at the Cross… or disappear?

Will you receive Him… or betray Him in silence?

Because the events are not repeating…
but the decision is.

✝️ THE FINAL TRUTH

It is called Holy Week because:

👉 God enters the darkest moment of human history…
and transforms it into the greatest act of love the world has ever seen.

This is not just a week.

It is the center of salvation.

And everything, before and after, depends on it.

✝️
