Being merciful stands in contrast with many modern beliefs. It is therefore very difficult to do and, in many times, impossible. And it should be, because we are practicing the work of God. We are living out what it means to be God’s children.

But following Jesus in the way of mercy comes with both privilege and power.

As we walk with God, we are commanded to work with Him—the work that He does—to be merciful. Not because it is a prerequisite to walk with Him, but an expression of who we are, and who we are walking with.

Reflections on HUMILITY

1. Humility is not only an attitude. It includes both attitude and action.
2. Humility does not wait for an opportunity to be humble. It looks out for the interests of others.

People say that humility is weak.

In some sense, it is true. We become weak so others can be empowered.

But paradocixally, humility is not for the weak.

Practicing it requires courage and determination, and we need the power of the Holy Spirit so we can follow the example of Jesus.

Because of Jesus, the New Testament emphasizes humility, for example: Romans12:3, Ephesians 4:2, and Philippians 2:3-4. Let’s consider how Paul encourages Christians to practice humility.

Philippians 2:3-4 (NASB)
“Do nothing [c]from [d]selfishness or empty conceit, but with humility consider one another as more important than yourselves; do not merely look out for your own personal interests, but also for the interests of others.”

In this text, we can understand that humility contrasts with selfishness and pride. It enables us to give more importance to our brothers and sisters than to ourselves.

We need to have the values of the Kingdom of God.

Christian values are Christlike qualities that reflect God’s Kingdom in how we live and relate with God, other people, and the rest of creation. They are formed through active discipleship and by the empowerment of the Spirit.

There are many important values in the Bible. They are emphasized in the Old Testament by the laws, prophets, and other writings. Jesus taught them and lived them out. As we journey with God, we as followers of Jesus must have these values. Our walk with the Lord will be faithful and fruitful.
