One of the Philippines’ strongest natural defenses against climate change grows along its coastlines.
PH MANGROVES AMONG WORLD’S MOST POWERFUL NATURAL CARBON STORAGES
The Philippines’ mangrove forests are increasingly recognized as some of the most effective carbon storage ecosystems on Earth. Unlike many land forests, mangroves store large amounts of carbon not only in their trees but also in deep waterlogged soils, where it can remain trapped for centuries.
Beyond capturing carbon, mangroves help protect coastal communities by reducing storm surges, limiting erosion, and mitigating flooding during typhoons. They also serve as vital nursery grounds for fish and other marine life. Experts warn that continued loss of mangroves due to development, pollution, and illegal cutting threatens both biodiversity and climate resilience.
