Solemnity of Pentecost
Dakilang Kapistahan ng Pentekostes

Rev. Fr. Anton Renoblas
May 24, 2026 | 3:30PM

Many times, we also carry fears, burdens, doubts, and uncertainties in our hearts. Yet the Holy Spirit continues to wait patiently for us to open our hearts through prayer. When we spend time with God, we begin to recognize that we are never alone. The Holy Spirit is quietly guiding us, strengthening us in our weaknesses, comforting us in our sorrows, and leading us closer to Jesus each day.
If we truly desire to become more aware of the presence of the Holy Spirit, there is no other way but to cultivate a faithful and prayerful life. As we draw closer to God in prayer, we become more open to receiving His gifts—Wisdom, Understanding, Counsel, Fortitude, Knowledge, and Fear of the Lord (Isaiah 11:2). These gifts help us live not according to our fears and weaknesses, but according to God’s grace and will.

Solemnity of the Ascension of the Lord
Dakilang Kapistahan ng Pag-akyat sa Langit ng Panginoon

Jesus entrusted His disciples with a sacred mission, saying: “Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you” (Matthew 28:19–20). “Share the Good News about Me, and do not be afraid, for I am always with you.” Sharing Jesus with the world requires courage, humility, patience, and a heart filled with faith. As we continue our journey of faith, may we not keep Jesus only within the comfort of our hearts, but may we courageously bring Him to others through our kindness, compassion, forgiveness, and love.

Today, Catholics celebrate the feast of St. Bernadette Soubirous, a renowned visionary of Lourdes.

Here are 7 things to know about the girl behind Lourdes:

1. She grew up in extreme poverty

- Bernadette was born in 1844 in Lourdes. Her family was so poor that they once lived in a single-room former jail cell after losing their home and business. She struggled in school and had difficulty reading and writing, which made her story even more surprising to those who doubted her visions.

2. She experienced 18 visions of Mary

- Between February and July 1858, Bernadette reported seeing the Virgin Mary 18 times in a cave known as the grotto. During one apparition, Mary identified herself as “the Immaculate Conception,” a teaching that had only recently been declared by the Church, something Bernadette likely wouldn’t have known.

3. She uncovered a spring believed to heal

- Mary instructed Bernadette to dig in the dirt, revealing a muddy trickle that became a flowing spring. Today, millions visit for its reported healing properties, which is now the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Lourdes

4. She avoided fame and chose religious life

- Despite international attention, Bernadette chose to live quietly and entered a convent, dedicating her life to prayer and service.

5. She suffered from chronic illness

- Throughout her life, Bernadette dealt with poor health, including asthma and other complications, yet remained deeply devoted to her faith.

6. She died young but peacefully

- Bernadette passed away at just 35 years old in 1879, after years of illness and life in the convent. She was canonized as a saint by Pope Pius XI on December 8, 1933.

7. Her body is remarkably preserved

- Her body, now kept in the Convent of Saint Gildard, is considered incorrupt, meaning it has shown little decay over time.

In 1866, St. Bernadette Soubirous entered the Sisters of Notre-Dame at Nevers, where she was subjected to brutal treatment by the novice mistress. This oppression ceased when it was determined that she had a terrible, terminal illness. She died in Nevers on April 16, 1879.

Lourdes became one of the world's most popular pilgrimage locations, and the spring has produced 27,000 gallons of water per week since Bernadette's visions. St. Bernadette's body appears to have stayed internally incorrupt after her death, although it is far from perfect. Due to the darkening of her skin, light wax coverings were applied to her face and hands at her third exhumation in 1925.

O God, protector and lover of the humble, Who has bestowed upon Thy servant, Marie Bernadette, the favor of beholding the Immaculate Virgin Mary and of conversing with her, grant, we beseech Thee, that walking through the simple paths of faith, we may deserve to behold Thee in heaven. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, Thy Son, Who liveth and reighneth with Thee in the unity of the Holy spirit, God, world without end. Amen.

She is primarily the patron saint of the sick and bodily illness, poverty, shepherds and those ridiculed for their piety. She becomes The Messenger of the Immaculate Conception. Received the 18 visions of the Virgin Mary at the Grotto of Massabielle in Lourdes, France.

She recognized that the Lord was the true source of all her strength.

O Saint Bernadette you who as a meek innocent child were privileged to see eighteen times the Immaculate Mother of God and to be instructed by Her with many heavenly messages and who as a religious at the Convent of Nevers did offer yourself as a victim for the Conversion of sinners, obtain for us the grace to be pure of heart and to love mortification as you did, that we may be found worthy to see God and His Holy Mother in Heaven. Amen.
