HISTORY OF THE PASO DE LA JUMENTA
Mary Help of Christians Parish
Brgy. Quios, Panitan, Capiz, Philippines
Since 2014, the Paso de la Jumenta has been a cherished Lenten tradition of Mary Help of Christians Parish in Brgy. Quios, Panitan, Capiz. Celebrated every Palm Sunday, it commemorates the triumphant entry of Jesus Christ into Jerusalem, where He was welcomed by the people waving palm branches and proclaiming, βHosanna to the Son of David!β (Matthew 21:1-11).
The image of Christ riding on a donkey reflects the fulfillment of the prophecy, βBehold, your king comes to you, humble, and mounted on a donkeyβ (Zechariah 9:9), reminding the faithful of Christβs humility, peace, and kingship. Through this devotion, the community expresses faith, unity, and deep love for Christ, while strengthening family bonds among the people of Quios and parishioners who gather in prayer and active participation.
The image used in the procession, sculpted by Carlos Hillado Ilangos Jr of Fundidor Molo, Iloilo City, is owned by the descendants of the late Francisco Derecho Besorio and Angeles Altoveros Buaco and is faithfully managed by Jepoy Besorio Dela Cruz and Tisoy Raymart Besorio, whose service reflects a strong spirit of family love, devotion to Christ, and thanksgiving for the many graces and blessings received. Their stewardship continues to preserve and sustain this meaningful tradition.
More than a reenactment, the Paso de la Jumenta is a living expression of faith and gratitude, calling the people of Quios and parishioners to welcome Christ into their lives with humility and trust. It remains a vital part of the parishβs Holy Week celebration, nurturing the spiritual life, unity, and communal devotion of all parishioners.
