Maria Madre della Chiesa means Mary, Mother of the Church โ€” a title given to the Blessed Virgin Mary to honor her role as the spiritual mother of all Christians.

Pope Paul VI officially gave her this title in 1964 during the Second Vatican Council, and in 2018, Pope Francis made it a Church feast celebrated every Monday after Pentecost. It reminds us that Mary, who stood at the foot of the Cross and prayed with the apostles at Pentecost, continues to care for and intercede for the Church like a true mother.

This Sunday, the Church around the world celebrates Pentecost, one of the most important solemnities in the Christian liturgical year. Coming fifty days after Easter, Pentecost marks the day when the Holy Spirit descended upon the apostles and the Blessed Virgin Mary, transforming them from a frightened group into bold witnesses of the Risen Lord.

According to the Acts of the Apostles (Acts 2:1โ€“11), the apostles were gathered in one place when a powerful wind filled the room and tongues of fire appeared, resting on each of them. They were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in different languages, enabling people from many nations to understand them. This miracle reversed the confusion of Babel and marked the beginning of the Churchโ€™s mission to preach the Gospel to all peoples.

Salamat po, Among Kuray!

As you prepare to begin a new chapter in your priestly mission, we, your parishioners and spiritual family here at the Parish of the Lordโ€™s Baptism, want to express our deepest gratitude and love for everything you have done for us.

Hindi po madali ang magpaalam sa isang pari na hindi lang naging tagapamuno, kundi naging tunay na ama, g**o, at kaibigan sa aming lahat. Your presence in our parish has been a giftโ€”one that touched so many lives through your humility, compassion, and unwavering faith.

You taught us not only through your words, but more importantly through your example. Sa bawat misa, sa bawat pangaral, sa bawat tahimik mong pakikinig sa aminโ€”naroon ang malasakit, ang tunay na serbisyo, at ang pagmamahal ng isang pastol para sa kanyang kawan. We felt Godโ€™s love through you.

Your leadership brought life to our parish. The youth became more inspired to serve, families became more united in faith, and even those who were distant from the Church felt welcomed again. Sa panahon ng ligaya at pagsubok, hindi mo kami iniwan. Lagi kang nariyan upang iparamdam sa amin na hindi kami nag-iisa.

We will truly miss your calming homilies, your cheerful presence, your fatherly guidance, and even the little momentsโ€”like how you always found time to listen, or how you smiled at everyone, kahit pagod ka na. Alam naming hindi ito paalam, kundi isang โ€œhanggang sa muli,โ€ because you will always have a home in our hearts.

As you move to your new parish, we pray that God continues to strengthen you, bless you, and surround you with the same love and support you have given us. Mapalad ang bagong parokya na iyong paglilingkuran, dahil makakatanggap sila ng isang pari na tunay na may pusong alay sa Diyos at sa bayan.

Maraming salamat po, Fr. Ryan. Salamat sa iyong pag-ibig, sakripisyo, at walang sawang paglingkod. You are a part of our story, and we will carry your lessons and love wherever we go.

May the Lord bless you always in your journey. We love you, we thank you, and we will always pray for you.

With love and gratitude,
Santa Cruz Chapel Ministry of Altar Servers

Today, May 17, the Church remembers the Memorial of Saint Paschal Baylon, Franciscan Lay Brother and Mystic.

Paschal was born at Torre-Hermosa, in the Kingdom of Aragon, on May 24, 1540. He was born on the Feast of Pentecost, which in Spain is called "the Pasch of the Holy Ghost", which is why he received the name Paschal. He died at Villa Reale, May 15, 1592, on Whitsunday.

His parents, Martin Baylon and Elizabeth Jubera, were virtuous peasants. The child began very early to display signs of that surpassing devotion towards the Holy Eucharist, which forms the salient feature of his character.

From his seventh to his twenty-fourth year, he led the life of a shepherd, and during the whole of that period exercised a salutary influence upon his companions. He was then received as a lay brother amongst the Franciscan friars of the Alcantarine Reform. In the cloister, Paschal's life of contemplation and self-sacrifice fulfilled the promise of his early years.

His charity to the poor and afflicted, and his unfailing courtesy were remarkable. On one occasion, in the course of a journey through France, he triumphantly defended the dogma of the Real Presence against the blasphemies of a Calvinist preacher, and in consequence, narrowly escaped death at the hands of a Huguenot mob. Although poorly educated, his counsel was sought for by people of every station in life, and he was on terms of closest friendship with personages of eminent sanctity. Pascal was beatified in 1618, and canonized in 1690.

His cultus has flourished particularly in his native land and in Southern Italy, and it was widely diffused in Southern and Central America, through the Spanish Conquests.

In his Apostolic letter, Providentissimus Deus, Leo XIII declared St. Paschal the especial heavenly protector of all Eucharistic Congresses and Associations. His feast is kept on 17 May. The saint is usually depicted in adoration before a vision of the Host.

Saint Paschal Baylon, pray for us.

Faith in the Fields: The Enduring Legacy of Saint Isidore the Farmer

Madrid, Spain โ€” In a world increasingly defined by technology and speed, the quiet witness of a humble 12th-century farm laborer continues to resonate across centuries and continents. Saint Isidore the Farmer, known in Spanish as San Isidro Labrador, remains one of the most beloved saints of the Catholic Church, especially among farmers and rural communities who find in him a model of simple, steadfast faith.

Born around 1070 A.D. in Madrid, then a small village under Moorish rule, Isidore lived a life marked by poverty, labor, and deep devotion to God. Despite his humble beginnings and limited education, his unwavering piety and work ethic elevated him to sainthood, canonized in 1622 alongside luminaries like Saint Ignatius of Loyola and Saint Teresa of รvila.

Isidore worked for a wealthy landowner named Juan de Vargas, tending the fields around Madrid. He was known to rise early each morning to attend daily Mass before beginning his work. His co-workers accused him of neglecting his duties for prayer, but according to tradition, Isidoreโ€™s fields yielded more crops than any other. One of the most famous legends tells of an occasion when his master witnessed angels plowing the fields beside himโ€”a divine testimony to the balance of faith and labor.

Married to Blessed Maria Torribia, herself a figure of sanctity later known as Santa Marรญa de la Cabeza, Isidore was also a devoted husband and father. The couple lived modestly, often sharing their food with the poor and opening their home to those in need. Stories abound of miraculous provisions: a pot that never ran out of stew, animals fed from his meager stores, and water springing forth to quench the thirst of the weary.

Saint Isidore died on May 15, 1130, and was buried in the Church of San Andrรฉs in Madrid. Forty years later, his body was found incorrupt, a sign of holiness that drew pilgrims from across Spain. Over the centuries, countless miracles have been attributed to his intercessionโ€”including saving the city of Madrid during times of drought, plague, and war.

Saint Isidore the Farmer, Pray for us!

Saint Matthias was one of the twelve apostles of Jesus Christ, chosen by the early Christian community to replace Judas Iscariot after his betrayal and death. His selection is recorded in the Acts of the Apostles (Acts 1:15โ€“26), where the apostles, guided by prayer and the casting of lots, affirmed Godโ€™s choice of Matthias. Though not originally among the Twelve, Matthias was a follower of Jesus from the beginning of His ministry and a witness to the Resurrection. He is venerated as a martyr and apostle in the Catholic Church.

Saint Matthias, pray for us.

Today, May 13, 2025, the Catholic Church observes the Optional Memorial of Our Lady of Fatima, commemorating the Blessed Virgin Maryโ€™s apparitions to three shepherd children in Fรกtima, Portugal, in 1917. This day also falls within the Easter season, specifically the Tuesday of the Fourth Week of Easter. ๏ฟผ

Our Lady of Fatima

On May 13, 1917, the Virgin Mary appeared to Lucia dos Santos and her cousins Francisco and Jacinta Marto in the Cova da Iria near Fรกtima. Over six months, she delivered messages emphasizing prayer, repentance, and conversion. These apparitions culminated in the โ€œMiracle of the Sunโ€ on October 13, witnessed by thousands. The Church officially recognized the apparitions in 1930. Our Lady of Fatima is particularly venerated in Portugal and by devotees worldwide.

Our Lady of Fatima, Pray for Us.

Longest Conclave

Conclave of 1268โ€“1271
Duration: 2 years, 9 months (from November 1268 to September 1271)
Location: Viterbo, Italy

Reason for length: Deep divisions among the cardinals, primarily between French and Italian factions.

Outcome:
The citizens of Viterbo eventually locked the cardinals in and removed the roof to hasten their decision.

Pope Elected: Pope Gregory X (Teobaldo Visconti, not even a cardinal at the time).

Impact: Led to reforms on how conclaves are conducted (e.g., seclusion of cardinals, restrictions on comforts).

โธป

Shortest Conclave

Conclave of 1503 (October)
Duration: About 10 hours
Location: Vatican, Rome

Reason for brevity: Consensus formed quickly around a strong candidate.

Outcome:
Pope Elected: Pope Julius II (Giuliano della Rovere)

He had strong support and had been a prominent figure in previous papal elections.

Note: Another conclave also occurred earlier in 1503, following the death of Pope Alexander VI.

With great joy and solemn reverence, the bells of St. Peterโ€™s Basilica have rung and the white smoke has risen from the Sistine Chapel. Today, May 8, 2025, the Holy Catholic Church proclaims: Habemus Papam! โ€” We have a Pope!

The College of Cardinals has elected His Holiness Pope Leo XIV, formerly known as Robert Francis Prevost, as the 267th successor to the Apostle Peter. A son of Chicago, a servant of Peru, and a devoted Augustinian missionary, Pope Leo XIV brings with him decades of pastoral care, theological wisdom, and a heart deeply attuned to the needs of the faithful around the world.

As he stepped onto the central loggia of St. Peterโ€™s Basilica, the world paused to witness history: the first American-born pontiff, a man of humility and conviction, now bearing the mantle of the Vicar of Christ. With hands lifted in blessing and a heart open to the call of the Spirit, Pope Leo XIV greets the Church universal.

Let us lift our prayers in unity and hope for our new Holy Father โ€” that the Lord may grant him strength, wisdom, and grace to shepherd His flock in these times. May his pontificate be marked by compassion, truth, and a renewed witness to the Gospel.

Viva il Papa! Long live Pope Leo XIV!
