The Right Reasons
God wants you to love your fellow man and to show kindness towards them. He desires that your heart is tender toward those in need. In Matthew 5:16, we’re told, “... let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.” However, when helping others, be sure you’re doing it for the ‘right’ reasons. No one wants to have you do something for them and then keep rubbing their face in it by reminding them over and over again what you did! Neither is it a good idea to help someone based on your own selfish motives, wanting something in return. When you help out a neighbor, were you motivated by pride so you could go to church and let everyone know what an awesome person you are? Ask yourself, am I helping someone for my own gain or to glorify God? Real joy in helping others comes from a clean heart and a right spirit. There’s no room for selfishness in a Christian's heart, nor does God want a spirit of helping because He commands it, as if it were a burdensome chore. If you view service to God as an obligation, it won’t fill your heart with happiness but rather a heavy feeling of drudgery. When we reach out to help someone, God views it as something we did for Him personally. Jesus said in Matthew 25:40, “Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.” The best reason of all to be kind, generous, and thoughtful toward others is because we have a true heart’s desire to share God’s love. The Bible says in Ephesians 6:7-8, “Serve wholeheartedly, as if you were serving the Lord, not men, because you know that the Lord will reward everyone for whatever good he does...” There is a huge reward for those who serve for the “Right Reasons,” and that is eternal life with Jesus!
