Verse 10 adds this, for we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand so that we would walk in them. We are his workmanship.

The emphasis is on God as the one who took dead men and made them alive.
..It's His grace, but we were created for good works. Says we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works which God prepared beforehand so that we should walk in them. We are His workmanship.

What that means, His workmanship, His lordship, His purpose...In eternity past, God not only chose a people for Himself, but He marked out a path for us to walk. When we think of predestination, we think of salvation.

What is the reason that God makes alive the walking dead?

He does so to demonstrate and to display His grace.

Paul says it this way..."By grace through faith"...It is not our faith which activated God's grace, but God's grace which chose us and enabled us to Believe, before God's grace made us alive, dead men walking.

The flesh is our sinful human nature.

That flesh is that part of us which describes all of our natural desires and everything in us which is opposed to God's will and to God's ways.

The flesh is all of our desires and everything in us which does not come from God's Spirit.

Verse 5 says, "For those who are in accord with the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh. But those who are in accord with the Spirit, the things of the Spirit."

That's why Paul instructs in Romans 12 to renew our minds. For the mind set on the flesh is death, but the mind set on the Spirit is life and peace.

You were dead in your sins. Before God gave us new life in Christ, we were dead men walking.

The image of dead men walking, physically breathing, but spiritually dead.

Remember the parable of the prodigal son?

A foolish son demanded his inheritance, left his father's house, he spent it all. He squandered it all. He wasted it on a sinful living, on pleasures. He ended up with nothing, with nothing.

And he was so hungry, he had to get a job. And he found a job feeding the pigs. And he was so hungry and so poor that the pigs were eating better than he was. And he had this desire to eat the food, being fed to the pigs.

When he finally came home, this is what his father said in Luke 15:24. For this son of mine was dead and has come to life. He was lost and has been found and they began to celebrate. Notice the father's words.

All that time the son had been walking, breathing, living, spending, indulging himself, yet the father calls him Dead.

And that is every person apart from Christ.

We are... Looks like we're alive. Looks like we're alive and in every outward way, and yet we are dead in our sins.

...and because of that, we need to ask Him and rely on Him— rely on His Holy Spirit to open the eyes of our hearts for us to see the hope, for us to see the inheritance, for us to see the power and this is what it means to serve with our eyes fixed on Jesus.

Pray for preaching that not only informs but pierces the heart.

Pray for the kind of ministry that Martyn Lloyd-Jones described, where people immediately know when they feel the Spirit.

Not because the preacher is dramatic.
Not because the preacher is clever.
Not because the music manipulates our emotions, but because the truth of God comes with clarity, with conviction, seriousness and spiritual weight.

Pray for worship that is not performative.
Pray for worship that is reverent and joyful.
Pray for leaders that are not self-protective.
Pray for leaders that are servant-hearted.
Pray for fellowship that is not superficial.
Pray for something that is honest and warm.
Pray for evangelism that is not subject to gimmicks but is clear, brave, and Christ-centered.
Pray for discipleship that produces stability, tenderness, repentance, and obedience.

Do not measure everything by money.
Do not measure everything by attendance.
Do not measure everything by outward visibility.
Do not measure everything by online reach; measure your ministry by faithfulness to Christ.

The world measures people in many ways.

Most number one determinant is money, and there's education, title, family name, social position, influence, strength, professional achievement.

But God, when He sees us, when He sees His people, when He sees believers, when He sees people who have received and encountered true faith, God sees people through the lens of Jesus Christ.

And that makes every believer who trusts Jesus precious to God.

Christian hope is not merely wishfully thinking for the better. It also does not pretend that suffering does not exist.

Christian hope is full confidence, trust in the promises of God.

So when God calls us to belong to Christ, we trust it. When God calls us out of darkness into His light, we trust it. When God calls us to be His people and share in the life of Christ, we trust it.

What this means is because God began His work in us, Our future is secure in Him.

What would make a man move from the grand city, from the central location?

What would make a man turn and bring his family to something less?

He began to see something more important than professional success.

He saw the glory of Christ and the necessity of the gospel and his life illustrates something for us.

That we have a burden, that when we are Christian and we have the Holy Spirit, we begin to see things different than everyone else.
