Before the silence of the monastery, there were runways, elegant gowns, and the glittering world of Philippine fashion.

Edgardo Gomez — better known in Manila society as “Gang” Gomez — was once one of the country’s most respected fashion designers during the 1970s and 80s. His creations were known for their timeless elegance, delicate embroidery, and beautiful use of traditional Filipino fabrics. In an era when fashion houses defined social prestige, his name carried weight.

He had success. Recognition. A thriving career.

But beneath the world of couture and high society, another desire had quietly lived in his heart for years.

He wanted the monastery.

While many dream of entering the world he already possessed, Gomez dreamed of leaving it behind. In the 1990s, he made a decision that stunned many in the fashion industry: he closed his fashion house and entered monastic life.

The designer became a monk.

Today, he is known as Dom Martin de Jesus Gomez, a Benedictine monk who exchanged the applause of fashion shows for prayer, silence, and the rhythm of monastic life.

It is a striking reminder that some of the most radical journeys are not from poverty to success—but from success to surrender.
