THE SPIRITUAL FATHER OF PADRE PIO

Padre Benedetto of San Marco in Lamis.

Padre Benedetto was born on March 16, 1872 and became a Capuchin Priest on April 11, 1898. He first met Padre Pio on April 25, 1903 in Morcone. He became Padre Pio’s Superior and had to deal with the situation of Padre Pio who was obliged to live outside the community as he was very sickly.
Padre Benedetto was a strict director, at times withdrawn, did not indulge in sentimentalism and took a quite personal and confidential tone. He became Padre Pio’s true counsel, consolation and guidance. Padre Pio regarded him as his true teacher in ways of the spirit and his authoritative direction.
Padre Benedetto, being a convinced witness of the mystical gifts of Padre Pio, kept them secret as long as he could. When the news of these gifts became public, Padre Benedetto remained discreet and prudent about it.
In June 22, 1922 Padre Pio was ordered to break off all communication with Padre Benedetto. This order was accepted by both friars with since humility and devout submission. This ended the period of spiritual direction of Padre Benedetto to Padre Pio which is all documented in the collection of all of these letters.
They altogether exchanged 264 letters – 162 written by Padre Pio and 102 by Padre Benedetto.
