She saw a priest in hell in a visionโฆ and the warning is for more than just priests.
Most Catholics donโt realize thisโฆ You could look faithful on the outside and still be in serious danger before God.
In the 14th century, St. Bridget of Sweden received many private revelations about the love of Christ and the state of the Church. In some of these writings, she describes what the Lord showed her about the dignity of the Catholic priesthood, and the serious responsibility that comes with it.
In her Revelations, she records words attributed to our Lord about how deeply He entrusts Himself to priests, especially in the Eucharist. The Church teaches that at every Mass, through the priest, Jesus becomes truly present in the Blessed Sacrament. This is not symbolic. It is real. Because of this, the priesthood holds a unique role that no angel has been given.
She writes that the Lord spoke of gifts given to priests, including the authority to forgive sins and to consecrate the Eucharist. This reflects what the Church teaches about the priest acting in the person of Christ. These are not human powers, but gifts meant for serving souls and leading people to God.
At the same time, her writings include strong warnings. She describes how some priests, in her visions, were shown as neglecting their calling, preaching for themselves, or leading others in the wrong direction. These passages are not official doctrine, but they are consistent with Scripture, which warns that those who teach and lead will be judged more strictly (see James 3:1).
One line stands out clearly: the closer a person is to sacred things, the more seriously God takes their faithfulness.
She also recounts a vision of a priest who appeared holy to others but lacked true interior conversion. This kind of story reflects a real spiritual truth found throughout the tradition of the Church: outward actions alone are not enough. God sees the heart.
This is not meant to accuse priests. The Church honors the priesthood as a great gift, and we depend on faithful priests for the sacraments. But it is also a call to take holiness seriously, especially for those entrusted with guiding others.
The message is simple and direct.
Pray for your priests.
St. Bridget of Sweden, pray for us and for all priests. Sacred Heart of Jesus, have mercy on Your priests.
๐ฌ If God will judge leaders more strictly, how seriously should we take the way we live our own faith?
