Viva, Seรฑor San Roque!

| "Let's Help One Another": Archbishop Uy Highlights Charity and Synodality on the Feast of San Roque

"Let's help one another." This was the resounding call of Archbishop Alberto S. Uy during his heartfelt homily for the feast of Seรฑor San Roque. Addressing the gathered faithful, the Archbishop delivered a powerful message on charity, community, and the shared path to holiness.

At the center of his reflection was a profound insight into the dynamics of wealth, poverty, and spiritual grace. "In this world, the rich has the greater opportunity to help the poor," Archbishop Uy shared. "In heaven, the poor has the greater privilege to help the rich." This poignant reminder challenged the congregation to rethink the purpose of earthly blessings and to recognize the immense spiritual value of those in need.

To illustrate this, he pointed to the life of the beloved patron saint, Seรฑor San Roque. Though born into a family of nobility and wealth, San Roque did not cling to his earthly riches. Instead, he used his position as an opportunity to care for the poor and the plague-stricken. By dedicating his life to serving the vulnerable, he gained the ultimate reward of heaven, serving as a perfect model of selfless love for todayโ€™s faithful.

Framing his message within the joyous celebration of the Archdiocesan Centenary, Archbishop Abetโ€”as he is fondly calledโ€”strongly emphasized the concept of synodality. He reminded the community that faith is not meant to be an isolated endeavor, but a collective journey. The ultimate goal of the church is to walk together toward heaven, ensuring that no one is left behind.

"Dili kay 'mag-pilgrimage ko' o 'mag-pilgrimage mi.' Mag-pilgrimage ta... kitang tanan apil sa pilgrimage," the Archbishop stressed. As the local church marks its historic milestone, his homily serves as a timely invitation to embrace San Roqueโ€™s legacy of generosity, ensuring that the pilgrimage or the synodal journey to eternal life is a shared mission of love and mutual help.

| Welcome, Archbishop Abet: SRP@40 Warmly Receives the New Cebu Archbishop

Earlier today, the faithful of San Roque Parish in Lipata, Minglanilla, warmly embraced the shepherding of their new Archbishop, His Excellency, the Most Rev. Alberto S. Uy, with a formal reception on the parish grounds.

The Archbishop was warmly greeted by Parish Priest Rev. Fr. Joseph Onesimo Zacarias and Parochial Vicar Rev. Fr. Res Kenneth Arong, alongside the parish executive committee and guest clergy.

To honor the Archbishop upon his arrival, youth volunteers treated him to a vibrant performance inspired by Minglanilla's very own Sugat Kabanhawan Festival. This festive greeting was followed by a ceremonial tree planting, symbolizing new growth and leaving a living legacy of nature within the parish vicinity.

Archbishop Uy then entered the church for the solemn rite of reception. After receiving the parish cross, he spent a quiet moment in prayer before the altar, preparing to preside over the Solemn Pontifical Mass in honor of Seรฑor San Roque.

| A Journey of Faith: Hundreds Join Solemn Foot Procession for Seรฑor San Roque

Following the deeply moving Novena Mass celebrated by the Archbishop Emeritus Jose S. Palma, the community's devotion poured out from the church doors and into the streets for a Solemn Foot Procession.

Hailing the sacred image of Seรฑor San Roque, hundreds of faithful devotees gathered to walk side-by-side. The procession became a moving testament of faith, with the crowd offering their heartfelt prayers and petitions as they accompanied the beloved patron saint of the sick and the poor along the route.

Walking in solidarity with the congregation were Parish Priest Rev. Fr. Joseph Onesimo Zacarias and Parochial Vicar Rev. Fr. Res Kenneth Arong. Their presence alongside the parishioners highlighted the strong spirit of unity and shared pastoral devotion within the community.

As the procession moved forward, the collective prayers and hymns echoed the Archbishop Emeritus's earlier call for compassion and spiritual readiness. It was a beautiful culmination of the day's liturgy, visually cementing the community's profound reverence for the saint who continues to inspire them to keep their hearts open to the Lord and to one another.

| A Heart for the Suffering: Archbishop Emeritus Returns for San Roque Novena Mass

After almost a year of relinquishing his pastoral post, the Archbishop Emeritus of Cebu, Most Rev. Jose S. Palma, made a deeply spiritual return to celebrate a Novena Mass in honor of Snr. San Roque. His presence brought a comforting familiarity to the faithful, as he delivered a homily centered on compassion, spiritual readiness, and the enduring legacy of the beloved patron saint.

During his reflection, the Archbishop Joe directed the congregationโ€™s attention inward, asking a profound question: What is inside our hearts? He challenged the devotees to examine their spiritual lives, asking whether their hearts are truly ready to listen and discern their own being and longings. More importantly, he urged them to reflect on the current state of their relationship with both the Lord and their neighbors.

Drawing inspiration from the life of the patron saint, he emphasized San Roqueโ€™s unwavering heart for the poor and the sick, particularly during the time of the plague. By relating the saintโ€™s historical acts of mercy to the global struggles of the recent pandemic, the Archbishop reminded the faithful of the saint's powerful role as an intercessor.

San Roque, he noted, is "the one the faithful fervently call upon, especially" when praying the Oratio Imperata in times of crisis, especially during the COVID pandemic. Archbishop Joe left the congregation with a message of hope and a call to emulate the saint's compassion, reminding everyone that San Roque is a saint who will never harden his heart toward those who are suffering.

| A Meaningful Homecoming: Fr. Manugas Returns to Lipata for a Novena Mass

โ€œLong time no see, but now see now.โ€

With this warm and lighthearted greeting, Rev. Fr. Francis O. Manugas marked a special reunion with the Lipata San Roque Parish community. Returning as the guest homilist for the 8th day of the Novena Mass on August 6, 2026, the former parochial vicar reflected on a beautiful and timely coincidence.

While delivering his reflection on Jesus' Transfiguration in the gospel of Matthew (17:1-9), Fr. Manugas interestingly shared that it was exactly seven years agoโ€”on August 6, 2019โ€”when he first arrived at the parish to begin his service as its parochial vicar. After a seven-year journey, returning on the exact anniversary of his arrival to celebrate the 8th day novena brought a profound sense of nostalgia and spiritual homecoming.

In his homily, he reminded us that in order for us to have eternal life, we must CHANGE like Jesus:

C - Climb with Christ
H - Hear His Voice
A - Accept His Cross
N - Never be Afraid
G - Go and Witness
E - Experience Transformation Everyday

For us, parishioners of Lipata San Roque Parish, the Mass was not just a continuation of their solemn Novena preparations, but a joyous opportunity to welcome back a familiar and cherished spiritual guide who continues to inspire them to grow in faith.
