✝️ NEW UPDATE FROM THE VATICAN😳🤔
Vatican Clarifies: Mary Is Mother of the Faithful, Not Co-Redemptrix
________________
The Vatican’s Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith on Tuesday, 4 November 2025, has released a new document titled Mater Populi Fidelis (“Mother of the Faithful People”), approved by Pope Leo XIV.
It explains how the Church understands certain titles given to the Blessed Virgin Mary, and why some of them should be used with care.
Here’s a simple summary of the document 👇
✝️1. Mary’s True Place in Salvation
Mary is the Mother of Jesus and the Mother of all believers. She lovingly cooperated with God’s plan by saying yes to becoming the Mother of the Savior.
But the Church reminds us: only Jesus Christ is the Redeemer and Mediator.
Everything in Mary’s life points to Him and helps us to know Him better.
✝️ 2. The Title “Co-Redemptrix”
The document explains that calling Mary “Co-Redemptrix” is not appropriate.
Why? Because it can make people think that Mary shares the same saving power as Jesus, and that is not true.
Some Popes, including St. John Paul II, once used this term in a devotional sense, but never as official Church teaching.
The Second Vatican Council and later Popes (including Benedict XVI and Francis) have avoided the title because it creates confusion about Christ’s unique role as Redeemer.
The document clearly states:
“It would not be appropriate to use the title ‘Co-Redemptrix’ to define Mary’s cooperation. This title risks obscuring Christ’s unique saving work.”
Mary stood faithfully at the foot of the Cross, united with her Son’s suffering, but she did not redeem humanity.
She cooperated with the Redeemer; she was not a redeemer herself.
✝️ 3. The Title “Mediatrix”
The Bible says clearly:
“There is one mediator between God and man, the man Christ Jesus.” (1 Timothy 2:5)
Therefore, Jesus is the only Mediator between God and humanity.
However, in a smaller and secondary sense, we can say that Mary “mediates” because she prays for us and leads us to her Son.
When Catholics use the title Mediatrix, it must never mean that she has power apart from Christ.
It means she cooperates with His mercy through her loving intercession.
✝️ 4. “Mediatrix of All Graces”, What It Really Means
This title can be used only with care.
Mary is not the source of grace, only God gives grace through Christ.
As the document explains:
“No human person, not even the Apostles or the Blessed Virgin, can act as a universal dispenser of grace. Only God can bestow grace, and He does so through the humanity of Christ.”
When we say “Mediatrix of all graces” in the right sense, we mean this:
👉 Mary’s prayers and maternal care help us receive the blessings God wants to give.
👉 She intercedes for us, and God lovingly listens to His Mother.
The Note adds that the word “graces” can also include all the helps, even material ones, that God grants when He hears Mary’s intercession.
So yes, Mary truly helps us, but all grace still comes from God, through Christ.
✝️ 5. Titles the Church Encourages
The Church recommends using titles that highlight Mary’s spiritual motherhood, such as:
- Mother of the Faithful
- Mother of Believers
- Spiritual Mother
These titles show that Mary leads us to Christ without ever taking His place.
Her motherhood does not reduce His glory, it reveals His love even more.
✝️ 6. A Word of Guidance
Cardinal Víctor Manuel Fernández, Prefect of the Dicastery, thanked the faithful for their love of Mary but warned against groups or online pages that promote new “dogmas” about her.
He reminded everyone that true Marian devotion should always lead to greater love for Jesus.
“Everything in Mary is directed to Christ.” ~ Mater Populi Fidelis
Not every title helps us understand her correctly,
But every truth about Mary leads us closer to Jesus.
