“MY LORD, HAVE MERCY ON ME, A SINNER.”
This short prayer echoes the humility of the tax collector in the parable told by Jesus Christ in the Gospel (Luke 18:13). While the Pharisee boasted about his righteousness, the tax collector stood at a distance, would not even raise his eyes to heaven, and simply prayed: “O God, be merciful to me, a sinner.” Jesus taught that it was this humble man who went home justified.
In the Christian life, recognizing our sinfulness is not meant to lead us to despair. Instead, it opens our hearts to the infinite mercy of God. When we say, “My Lord, have mercy on me, a sinner,” we are placing ourselves completely in God’s compassion, trusting that His love is greater than our failures.
This prayer is also very similar to the Jesus Prayer, cherished especially in the Eastern Christian tradition:
“Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me, a sinner.”
It is a prayer of humility, repentance, and trust. It reminds us that we stand before God not because we are perfect, but because His mercy never fails.
