Andrew's Children's Ministries God has placed in my heart a compelling vision of compassion and great passion to help and care for the homeless, the abandoned, the neglected, and the abused

The streets of Manila, Philippines have become home for more than two hundred thousand kids. Andrew’s Children’s ministry is now becoming a realty to help some of these children. They are like Andrew who was once abandoned, neglected and abused. But God saw fit to rescue this precious boy so we can reach out together to help many other children.

God was looking for a man after his own heart. God led the people like a shepherd: ‘Then he led his people out like sheep, took his flock safely through the wilderness. He took good care of them; they had nothing to fear’ (Ps. 78;52–53, ).

Eventually he found David, a rare example in the Old Testament of great (though not perfect) leadership: ‘He chose David his servant… to be the shepherd of his people Jacob, of Israel his inheritance. And David shepherded them with integrity of heart; with skilful hands he led them’ (vv.70–72).

David had the experience of being a shepherd in the literal sense. God ‘took him from the sheep pens; from tending the sheep’ (v.70). He used these skills to be a shepherd also in the metaphorical sense of the leader and pastor of God’s people:

Jesus showed the supreme example of servant love. He said, ‘Greater love has no one than this, to lay down one’s life for one’s friends’ (John 15:13). He gave a very practical example of what this kind of servant love involved, when he washed the disciples’ feet. It is a commitment to help people, to whom we are not necessarily attracted, to grow in their love for Jesus, not seeking to control them but to liberate them.

When God calls you to follow him, he does not call you to a life of ease. Life on earth involves many battles, in all of which God promises you victory through Jesus Christ. There is never going to be a moment in your earthly life when everything is perfect. There are always going to be challenges, difficulties and problems to solve. However, there are times when these intensify and we seem to be coming under attack.

Jesus also made it clear that the greatest among us are those who serve others (Mt. 28:11). Repeat: greatest. We have such a short-sighted view of things in this world even within the Christian community. We highlight the speakers and authors, megachurch pastors and television evangelists.... C.L.

Staying the course to live in unity with other believers is the vehicle God uses to accomplish His work. This is why the psalmist wrote, “Behold, how good and pleasant it is when brothers dwell in unity!” (Psalm 133:1).

Someday I want to stand before Jesus Christ and I want to hear Him say, “Well done thou good and faithful servant. You were not perfect, but you did your best. You gave it your best shot. You tried to make your life count for Christ. You gave it away. You had mistakes and bloopers and did all kinds of things that were worthless, but you gave it your best shot” At that point, when Jesus says, “Well done thou good and faithful servant,” it will be worth it all.
