Why Visit Seven Churches On Holy Thursday?

The tradition of visiting Seven Churches on Holy Thursday grew out of this time of prayer and adoration that proceeds Mass. Jesus asked his disciples to stay and watch with Him while they were in the garden, and that's why we have Adoration after Mass until midnight every year on Holy Thursday at St. AJs. This tradition of mindful watching is a sort of pilgrimage to various altars of repose, in different churches that correspond to each of the seven places, or “stations,” that were made by Jesus between the Last Supper in the Upper Room to His crucifixion on the cross.

The seven stations consist of: Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane, Jesus bound and taken before Annas, Jesus taken before the High Priest, Caiaphas, Jesus taken before Pilate, Jesus taken before Herod, Jesus taken before Pilate again and Jesus given the crown of thorns and led to his crucifixion.

The Seven Churches Visitation is a powerful way to spend time in adoration, meditating on Christ’s sacrifice of love for the salvation of souls in preparation for the joy of Easter. There is something special about visiting churches late into the night. It is not just because of the opportunity to visit other parishes, it’s because of intentionally seeking Christ to spend time with Him and contemplating the gift of His love. CTTO UPenn.edu

The church of Alaminos was built in the far end of the Hacienda de Calauan, an estate owned by Miguel Lopez de Legazpi, Spanish Navigator and Governor of Manila. After his death, the hacienda was bequeathed to Juan de Salcedo, his grandson.

According to the records found in the Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines, our Parish was founded in 1815 with St. Joachim, Father of the Blessed Virgin Mary as its patron. This is the reason why the image of St. Joachim can still be seen in the facade of the church.

We remember today, the pain and suffering of the cross, and all that Jesus was willing to endure, so we could be set free. He paid the price, such a great sacrifice, to offer us the gift of eternal life.

Help us never to take for granted this huge gift of love on our behalf. Help us to be reminded of the cost of it all. Forgive us for being too busy, or distracted by other things, for not fully recognizing what you freely given, what you have done for us.

Thank you, Lord that by your wounds we are healed. Thank you that because of your huge sacrifice we can live free. Thank you that sin and death have been conquered and that your Power is everlasting.
