AUGUST 15 | SOLEMNITY OF THE ASSUMPTION OF THE BLESSED VIRGIN MARY

The Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary was already being celebrated on 15 August in the 5th century. It bore the sense of Our Lady’s “Birth into heaven”, or in the Byzantine tradition, her “Dormition”. The feast began to celebrated in Rome in the middle of the 7th century. It was not until 1 November 1950, that Pope Pius XII proclaimed the Dogma of Mary’s assumption body and soul into heaven. In the Apostles’ Creed, we profess our faith in the “Resurrection of the body” and in “life everlasting”. This is the ultimate goal and meaning of our life’s journey. This promise of faith is already accomplished in Mary, who is the “sign of sure hope and comfort” (Preface). It is a privilege granted to Mary, and closely connected to her being the Mother of Jesus. Since death and the corruption of the human body are consequences of sin, it was not right that the Virgin Mary – who is free from sin – should be affected by this natural law. Hence the mystery of her “Dormition” or “Assumption into heaven”. The fact that Mary has already been assumed into heaven is a reason to celebrate, to rejoice, to hope in the “already and the not yet”. One of God’s creatures – Mary – is already in heaven. With her, and like her, we too, who are God’s creatures, will one day be there too. Mary’s destiny, united to the transfigured and glorious body of Jesus, is, therefore, the destiny of all those who are united to the Lord Jesus in faith and love. It is interesting to note that the liturgy – through the biblical texts taken from the Book of Revelation and the Gospel according to Luke (the Canticle of the Magnificat) – helps us, not so much to reflect, as to pray. In fact, the Gospel suggests that Mary’s mystery be read in the light of her prayer, the Magnificat, that is, through the lens of gratuitous love that extends from generation to generation, and the predilection of the least and the poor. Its choicest fruit, you could say its masterpiece, is Mary, a mirror in which the entire people of God can see its own features reflected. The Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, body and soul, is an eloquent sign of how not only the “soul” but also the “body” is included in the biblical observation that “God found it very good” (Gn 1:31), so much so that in the Virgin Mary, “our flesh” would be assumed into heaven. This does not exempt us from committing ourselves to life here on earth, but rather that with our gaze fixed on the goal, on Heaven, our Homeland, we are driven to commit ourselves during our present life to reflect the Magnificat: to rejoice in God’s mercy, to be attentive to all our brothers and sisters we meet along the way, beginning with the weakest and most vulnerable.

25TH PRESBYTERAL ANNIVERSARY THANKSGIVING MASS OF REV. FR. MARK RANDY G. BELUSO

On July 30, 2026, Rev. Fr. Mark Randy G. Beluso, S.Th.L., MA, MALS celebrated his 25th Presbyteral Anniversary at the Parish of the Most Holy Name of Jesus, Makato, Aklan. Surrounded by fellow priests, family, friends, and the faithful, the celebration became a heartfelt thanksgiving to God for the gift of his priesthood and four decades of faithful and dedicated service in the Lord’s vineyard.

The event was graced by the presence of His Excellency, Most Rev. Cyril B. Villareal, D.D., Bishop of Kalibo and His Excellency, Most Rev. Jose Corazon T. Tala-oc, D.D., Bishop-Emeritus of Kalibo.

After completing his high school and college formation at Sto. Niño Seminary, Numancia, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree with a major in Classical Philosophy and minors in English and Catechetics, he pursued theological studies at the University of Santo Tomas Central Seminary, the UST Ecclesiastical Faculties, and the UST Graduate School from 1995 to 2000. During this period, he obtained a Bachelor in Sacred Theology, magna cm laude (1998), a Licentiate in Sacred Theology, major in Moral Theology, summa cm laude (2000), and a Master of Arts in Theology, also major in Moral Theology, summa cm laude (2000).

From 2001 to 2007, he served the Diocese of Kalibo in various capacities, including as Chancellor, Director of the Diocesan Liturgical Ministry, and Master of Liturgical Ceremonies. He also served as Private Secretary to Bishop Gabriel V. Reyes (2001–2003) and later to Bishop Jose Romeo O. Lazo (2004–2007). During this time, he also taught Philosophy at Sto. Niño Seminary.

From 2007 to 2009, he pursued postgraduate studies at the Liturgical Institute of the University of St. Mary of the Lake in Mundelein, Chicago, Illinois, USA, where he earned a Master of Arts in Liturgical Studies (M.A.L.S.).
Upon his return, from 2009 to 2012, he resumed his ministry as Director of the Diocesan Liturgical Ministry, served as a Formator and Professor at Sto. Niño Seminary, became Music Director of the seminary (2010–2011), and served as a Team Ministry Member of the Parish of St. Joseph the Worker, Numancia.

From 2010 to 2014, he rendered significant service at Aklan Catholic College (ACC) as Vice President for Finance and Administration, Head of the Religious Education Department, Coordinator of the Christian Formation and Development Department, and Chaplain to the Academic and Non-Academic Personnel. At the same time, he continued serving the Diocese as Director and Master of Liturgical Ceremonies of the Diocesan Liturgical Ministry.

From 2014 to 2024, he pursued a Doctorate in Sacred Theology, major in Pastoral Theology (Liturgical Studies), at the Ecclesiastical Faculties of the University of Santo Tomas, Manila. While completing his doctoral studies, he ministered as a Guest Priest in the Diocese of Parañaque, serving as Chaplain and General Services Coordinator of San Roque Catholic School, Alabang (2014–2017), Resident Guest Priest of San Roque de Alabang Parish (2014–2017), Our Lady of Fatima Parish, Philamlife Village, Las Piñas City (2017–2020), and the Cathedral Parish of St. Andrew, La Huerta, Parañaque City (2020–2024).

Since 2024, he has been serving as Parochial Vicar of the Most Holy Name of Jesus Parish, Makato, Aklan. He also served as School Administrator of St. Joseph's Academy of Malinao from 2024 to 2026 and presently serves as its School Director, a position he has held since 2026. Through his years of priestly ministry, he has faithfully dedicated himself to pastoral service, seminary formation, liturgical renewal, Catholic education, and the ongoing formation of the faithful.

The Eucharistic celebration reflected his unwavering commitment, pastoral zeal, and loving service to the people of God. As a community, we continue to thank the Lord for his life and vocation, praying that he may be blessed with strength, good health, and enduring joy as he continues his priestly mission.
