What did God remind His people of? How does this reminder speak volumes of emotional gravity to the message God is delivering through Amos? Have you found yourself in a similar situation, of needing to remind people to look back at how things have been between the two of you?

Why would the LORD “despise the feasts and solemn assemblies” (Amos 5:21) of His people? What was His plea to them in the preceding verses? How will you compare your relationship with God to the one that His people have in these passages? Are they different or similar?

How is He calling you to Him right now?

Who was Amos, and how did the prophet describe himself? Where would you put his writing in the timeline of Israel’s history? How do you think are those information relevant to the prophecies he will deliver for the rest of the book?

Who are the recipients of the LORD’s wrath in chapter 1? What were the reasons mentioned? What transition happened in chapter 2? Is this “shift” supposed to be surprising for the original audience of Amos? Why?

What clues can you get on when the book of Joel was probably written? Was there a mention of a king that normally serves as a time-stamp marker in prophetic books? Or was there none because it was probably written at a time hen there were no more kings?

Why does the author seem to warn of an even greater destruction? How is understanding when this was written in the history of Israel helpful in understanding the status of relationship between God and His people during the writing of this prophecy?

Where is your relationship with God right now, and where is it going? How are you reminded to nurture your relationship with God thru this prophetic book?

Is it unfair and unjust for God to say that “compassion is hidden from His eyes” (Hosea 13:14) to a people that’s supposed to be His but turned back on Him repeatedly? Is it wrong for a judge to convict a proven wrongdoer?

Could people be taking God’s loving grace for granted when the LORD says, “my anger has turned from them” (Hosea 14:4) because they do not see how much they rightly deserve God’s anger and judgment for their sins? How about us? How about you?

Have we accepted our own guilt for the sins we have committed? Are we not forsaking the LORD’s healing and redeeming grace?

Discipleship in church may come in different forms. And while one-on-one, life-on-life discipleship helps a lot of people in their walk in Christ, one clear way IBCM walks together as a church in following Jesus together is through our Sermon Discussions every 1:30 PM on Sundays. During our Sermon Discussion last Sunday, as we all meditated together on Luke 19:45 where Jesus quoted Isaiah 56:7 in adamantly reminding the people that “His House” should be a “House of Prayer”, we brainstormed on ideas on how we can look more like a house of prayer as a church.

Towards the end of our session, we closed the time by immediately applying this commitment that we all should strive to make our church Jesus’ House of Prayer.

Worship God with us by engaging God’s Word and praying with us every Sunday! See you! 👋

How does your own sinfulness, and a look back at all of your own iniquities and rebellion against God, make you appreciate the holiness and love that God has for you? How do you think will your perspective on God’s love and holiness be affected if God is not calling out the sinfulness of His people?

What are the things God accused His people of being guilty of? Can you enumerate them?

If you think about it, are all those things inherently bad in and of itself? What are the thing s that not inherently bad but has become sinful because it steers God’s people away from loving the LORD?

What good things in your life actually pull you away from a more intimate relationship with God? How is that similar or different from that of “Israel and Ephraim”?
